How does one join the Highway Patrol? Thoughts about being a HP officer? Pros/Cons?
you join by signing up and passing their tests..
Pros: steady income
Cons: Potential to be shot by niggers
I applied to be a police officer once. Then I got an emailing asking me to come to an assessment test.
I showed up at a police station at 7am along with about 10 other guys. They had us run a 1/2 mile and do a few other tests. Then a written exam.
I crushed the physical and written exam. They never called me though. There were a few veterans taking the exam too, so I think they got preference. Also I was tall and skinny, so I don't think they wanted that (6ft, 150lbs).
No idea about being a cop though.
If you are smart don't bother. If you don't have many options and can put up with that shit job, then yea do it. You'll probably have an easier life than my self-employed ass.

Go to the local station, and ask.
Pro: Decent pay, and pension.
Con: You can die.
The idea you get shot a lot in US as a cop is kind of a myth. It does happen, but only 42 cops were shot last year on duty. Which is a big number but when there are 1.1 million cops, it isn't a huge number. You are more likely to die on the job in a trade. You do have to deal with a lot of shit. A lot of people get into being a cop for the wrong reason. So you deal with a lot of shit heads at work and on the job with people. It also is a job so there is a lot of paperwork and you have to be meticulous with notes and any mistake you make on duty often have big consequences, it's a little bit worse when you fuck up on a sales job.

It's a little bit worse than if you were to fuck up in a sales job*
They have an exam for it every few years, you can go to their station and ask when the next one is.

The number of cops killed annually in traffic fatalities is usually pretty close to the number killed by gunfire. Just one more thing to consider.

Pros:
-Okay pay and benefits, depending on the state
-Opportunities for overtime
-Statewide jurisdiction
-Potentially more variety in terms of specialized assignments
-Arguably more respected by the general public, compared to local cops (again depending on the state)
Cons:
-The entire purpose of your job is to enforce traffic laws and do very little else
-People will be pissed off at you every day (see above)
-Dealing with horrific crashes and mangled bodies constantly
-The same cons as any other type of law enforcement job, with fewer upsides
-Poor relationship with local cops (depending on the area)
-Working nights, weekends, holidays, rotating days off, forced overtime
-The selection process will be a lot tougher than you think
-The academy will be a lot tougher than you think
-You won't help as many people or make as much of a difference as you think
Could be a pro or a con:
-Basically a quasi-military organization, with all the bullshit that goes with it
What people think is a pro but is actually a con:
-Take-home cruiser
