First, I am working for a company, I have been given a list of stuff that I can sell at extremely discounted prices at my discretion to get it out of our warehouse, they don't care if I sell it to other dealers or individuals, but I can't buy any of it myself, except for personal use.

Second, and this one is a bit more of a long shot, but I know someone who is having a hell of a time finding a maintenance guy for his mobile home park, Its in a rural area of the north western US, you have to be able to pass a background check and a drug test, pay is not amazing but cost of living is extremely low and you'll get 40 hours a week.

2. I know that google hires people by making them solve algorithm 101 tier problems on a white board. Why is this even seen as challenging or controversial?

3. Is it like a generic big corporate job where BS rules, or are intelligent contributions and hard work all that matter? Or where is it in between these extremes?

4. Do you ever work with people from unconventional backgrounds? i.e. non CS related degrees or people who were self taught programmers? What are they like compared to someone who did a CS degree from Stanford, as an example?

Having a goal like buying a home or retiring early helps give you motivation.
Other than that if you actually enjoy your job then that should be enough.
I've was in a position where I was making good money but didn't have any direction or goals in life and as a result became very self destructive. Now I've worked out what I want lifes a hell of a lot better.

Giving. Yeah I know it seems strange, but I've seen in happen. An old friend of mine started becoming very successful, earning well above 100k, and then started stagnating. He had the house, car, quality of life etc he always wanted. He had much more potential though, and one day he decided to randomly help a family who's house burnt down. The satisfaction he got from basically saving them from a horrible tragedy made him want to make more. He ended up starting a charity, which is now a huge success.

I don't think there are worthwhile military academies here, most of them seem to be specialized for pilots.

I'm not even sure if I'd like to commission, I'll probably enlist even if I get a degree.

I can't believe that. Contact the army and ask them what they can offer. Usually they have engineering positions of many kinds. Maybe even in CS. Usually great opportunities as long as you don't have to go to war.

Join the air force if you're intelligent, its not just about flying planes and aircraft

There are a lot of trades and skills that can carry over into the civilian marketplace and make a lot of money.

Of course, it all depends what your college situation looks like.

There's a Lockheed Martin around where I am. I was thinking about trying to get an internship there. But, I don't know how the life will be at large companies vs small companies. I hear that it's better to start at large companies to get experience. However, I don't know how much of this is true. I plan to stick with Aero/MechE anyways. I was considering EE, but I hear tons of them nowadays go into software.

We both make 6 figures and split bills evenly. We keep separate accounts for personal use but have a joint account solely for bills and vacations.

Never fought about money because we make so much compared to what we spend. Will have our home paid off next year at 27.

She paid for all expenses during a 3 month layoff I had a few years ago. I would do the same for her. We would both be fine on a single income but it's nice having a boatload of extra cash from split expenses.

My wife and I are both accountants and keep everything separate. At the end of every month we go over our expenses that could be considered mutual like electric, mortgage, groceries etc. We tally these expenses up, cut them in half and subtract out what we each paid. Whoever pays less writes the other person a check for the difference. So if I spent $600 on mutual expenses and she spent $500, we would take the $1,100 total divide it in half to get $550 and subtract out $500. She would write me a check for $50 just so everything is split down the middle. Any other personal expenses are irrelevant and not factored in. This process has been working pretty well for a little over two years now.

Closing longstanding cards impacts your credit history. Closing a new card would impact credit utilization.
