Should I buy shell on Tuesday
What happens Tuesday? Is that when Iran turns on the spigot or sth?

I think you should shell sell.
General business education thread.
I need advice from businessmen.
I will study an open degree at open university.
What is the best and most effective yet versatile module combination?
For my level one I wanted to pick essential mathematics 1 and 2, management practise and professional communication in business.
Level two I wanted to pick leadership classes, financial accounting and management accounting.
Level three I was thinking of managing 1, 2 and 3 and statistics&probability.
I'm thinking it would be most versatile yet effective for working in business. I know math, statistics, accounting and managing if I graduate. What would be a better pick? I'm also interested in economics and finance. And I study economics in my free time.
I wouldn't have any problems swapping out stuff for better alternatives that give me a higher chance of good positions.
Opem university experience is not required but would be nice to give more insight. Also I have been looking at jobs and their requirements to apply and for decent jobs it is always 5+ years experience, master in business blabla. Strong math background. Strong IT background.
Also what is one of the nicest jobs to have in business, nice salary, doing real work and having much possibility to grow to higher positions.
I am 18 and I need some reality check guidance on my future perspectives.
I do not live in the US, just assume I live in either Taiwan or Netherlands.
My , English MandarinandDutch are all fluent.
I have lots of capital as well in a few years since I am working a full time job now as personal assistant, so I could also go the entrepreneurship route. But let's say I want to climb to the top of the corporate ladder, what are your thoughts on doing this best?
I am straight so cocksucking to reach higher positions is not an option for me.
Sorry for the typos, my phone messes it up sometimes and it doesn't show the real text when I correct spelling mistakes.
I took a Scriptwriting class last semester and my teacher has been urging me to try selling a script I wrote, and gave me some contacts to call and pitch it to.
I honestly don't know anything about selling a script at all, does anyone here have any experience in this and mind sharing it?
I've also heard that even if you don't sell your script, you can use it as a way of getting a job, or good representation but how would I go about doing that?
>>1045779
>my teacher has been urging me to try selling a script I wrote, and gave me some contacts to call and pitch it to.
>I honestly don't know anything about selling a script at all
>instead of asking said teacher how to do it, decide to ask a board full of chucklefucks
>>1045795
I've been emailing her but she's slow to reply because she's not teaching any courses this semester.
I'm just asking for additional help desu senpai.
Do you have to be part of SAG to sell a script? Or you do sell it to someone who is part of SAG?
Is there still decent money to be made in writing apps? Anyone here done so?
I've been writing software for a decade or so now, and I'm curious if doing this on the side has viable returns, or if it's just pissing into the wind at this point.
>>1045700
There never was decent money to be made. Nothing has changed: if you happen to have the 1 in 10000 app that actually attracts an audience then you could be rolling in dough. Otherwise you pretty much threw your time/money out the window.
>>1045700
If you are interested in creating small/simple apps or games and you need support in UI/UX let me know. I also have a few ideas. I think it is difficult to create outstanding apps these days because the market is full. But what could work is making apps which are very intuitive, beautiful and simple.
>>1045738
>But what could work is making apps which are very intuitive, beautiful and simple.
That ship has sailed. What could work is making apps that work.
Can I go to a major city without a lot of money and just wait tables or bartend

Yes. Have fun sharing an apartment with 4 ex-cons though
Easily. Anywhere in the US besides NYC.
>>1045658
Yes, enjoy being poor.
Hi /biz/. I didn't know this board existed until just now.
Anyway, my grandparents are well into their retirement. They currently live with two of their sons, who are ~50 years old, and both unemployed (no spouse or children of their own). They are not looking for jobs, and never will. They are entirely supported by my grandparents' savings. I guess the idea is that when my grandparents inevitably pass away, their sons will live on the savings until they do too.
The thing is, all of their savings is just in a savings account. By the time their sons are 80, the value in the account will have depreciated to 35% of its value due to inflation alone. I think the money should be invested, so at least they can have a passive source of income.
I'm worried that they will squander their savings too quickly, and I will be the only one left to support them. I'm only 23 and I should not have to manage my family's finances, but even I have a job, an emergency fund, and max out my 401k and IRA each year. What would be the best course of action for my family to take?
>>1045653
>I'm worried that they will squander their savings too quickly, and I will be the only one left to support them.
Not your responsibility.
>I'm only 23 and I should not have to manage my family's finances
No shit.
>...but even I have a job, an emergency fund, and max out my 401k and IRA each year.
It is better to masturbate in private.
>What would be the best course of action for my family to take?
Firstly, step off the cross and stop acting like an early 20-something martyr. For better or worse these individuals are adults, and so long as their parents consent, then it is their money to do with freely as they wish.
If they ask, feel free to give out advice, but for fuck sake don't solicit. Your post reeks of arrogance, so that may be difficult. Everyone is free to make their own decisions, both bad and good. Like I said, this isn't your concern, so throwing yourself in front of a bus is merely for ego, far from respectable.
Your best course of action would be abandon your family to their own devices. Suggest ideas to them but don't be overly stubborn. Forcing people to make lifestyle changes at that age is nearly impossible, and teaching them new things is out of the question entirely. Just focus on your future, and try to limit your own downside once they come asking for money.
You should not have to suffer because of their poor choices.

> I didn't know this board existed until just now.
This board is woefully slow and monotonic, there's not much you can gain from lurking here.
>>1045673
Tbh, I didn't even realize I was being arrogant. Rereading my post, I see it now, and I'll make a sincere effort to change.
Hi. I'm a university student in Canada and I have quite a fair amount of cash saved at home. It's not from anything illegal but but I should probably deposit it into my bank account soon. I'm hesitant to deposit it all at once though just because I heard if you deposit too high of an amount you need to fill out paper work and stuff and it just sounds like a nuisance.

I think it's 10K in Canuckistan but probably depends on what type of the file the spooks have on you. The technocratic Inquisition is on! Race to remove cash and all that, go all plastic!
Hey /biz/ i need some advises and tips, im trying to start a newspaper in my uni, how can i make it profitable and create the need in students to read it, it will be free btw
Create a website and have ad spaces. No one fucking reads newspapers, let alone a couple A4 pages from some random, creepy student with 0 social skills.
Also, clickbait. A lot of clickbait.
>>1045344
I don't see how this deliver success in my country people still reads newspaper, i had the idea of banner ads but not filling the website this lame publicity that makes people hate it, and nobody browses web pages anymore, people nowadays thinks that facebook is the whole WWW
>>1045287
I don't think a free startup uni newspaper is going to be profitable
to actually make money you'd need to get it through advertising but who's going to pay you to put ads on a newspaper no-one has heard of that's only going to be read by students at a university?
if you're wanting to write something in particular you're better starting a blog and really as >>1045344 says doing anything without the internet in 2016 is dumb.
How would I go about starting a life insurance company?
I have a pretty good idea on how to make loads of cash off of it while still making the customer think they're getting a solid arrangement.
What certifications would I need? How could I get the financing for it?
Unlikely unless you're going to have a serious niche, have really solid experience in LI (I'm talking upper management), a fucking phenomenal network, and massive capital and collateral.
Tl;Dr not gonna happen. Sorry anon
Lol... you aren't going to be able to start a life insurance company, for any of the following reasons...
1. There are license requirements for people selling life insurance, and a lot more for the company itself.
2. You need PILES of cash. You have to be able to legally prove you have the money to provide the coverage you sell.
3. A small company wouldn't be able to compete with the big boys who have economy of sales.
4. By your description, it sounds more like you want to fool the customers rather than provide them a real service, which usually results in jail time.
If you're really interested in the industry, go work for one of the big names for 20-25 years, then start your own agency (kind of like a franchise in the insurance industry)
>>1044831
>I have a pretty good idea on how to make loads of cash off of it while still making the customer think they're getting a solid arrangement.
That's called fraud. If you try it, you'll go to prison.
Good luck.
They have around 70 trucks and 100 employees. I'm not sure how much it currently brings in, only that this was the best year ever thanks to diesel prices, which according to my grandpa saved them an additional $1.6M in 2015.
They have always discouraged us (grandchildren) from taking on the business because they say something bad is always happening, referring to wrecks, drivers dying on the job, lawsuits, etc. However it has made them very wealthy, moreso than I would ever be working for someone else with a four year degree.
None of the other grandkids want anything to do with it and already have their own ambitions. I'm 20 and not sure what to do right now. I'd like /biz/'s take on it. If there's room for expansion in the trucking industry so that I can build off their success, or if the business is doomed and I should stay far away.
>They have always discouraged us (grandchildren) from taking on the business because they say something bad is always happening, referring to wrecks, drivers dying on the job, lawsuits, etc. However it has made them very wealthy, moreso than I would ever be working for someone else with a four year degree.
If they don't want you in it they don't want you in it for some reason. Either because they think you can do better, or you're not cut out for it. They could also just have other plans for it (re: selling it to a larger company, or someone else) or they could have another successor lined up.
Ask them directly, you'll get a far better answer then what anyone here can give you.
>>1044651
truck drivers will be the first to be automated. well maybe taxi drivers first. but within 10 years.
>>1044651
I know people in the industry. It's a good industry. You'll make a lot of money, more than most. You'll be rich, but sadly, it's a career that will only go so far. You won't attain huge levels of success like becoming a billionaire. My suggestion would be to sell the company, learn some skills and use that to start up something much bigger. Something you can turn into a few 100 million.
dead store walking
http://www.bbc.com/news/business-35328098
>Sales rose just 3% in November and December, falling short of the expected 3.7% growth according to the National Retail Federation. The Walmart closures will affect 10,000 US workers and 16,000 worldwide. The announcement came three months after Walmart chief executive Doug McMillon told investors the company would focus on becoming more nimble. "Closing stores is never an easy decision. But it is necessary to keep the company strong and positioned for the future," Mr McMillon said in October. The national shortfall in holiday shopping came even as retailers offered steep discounts to attract customers.
>Neil Saunders, chief executive of retail analysts Conlumino, said it was a significant move: "Walmart's decision to scale back its store numbers in the US underlines how much the retail landscape has changed over the past few years. The blunt truth is that while stores remain a vital part of the retail mix, they are not quite as relevant as they used to be.
>The weak economic outlook was not confined to the service sector. On Friday, the Federal Reserve reported industrial production in December shank by 0.4% the second month of contractions. Industrial production, which includes manufacturing, mining and utilities has been hit by a strengthening dollar and global economic weakness.
>>1044624
Poor Walmart and their measly $500B/year in revenue and $15B in net income. Must be tough for them...
Oh right, 100 stores in bumfuck nowhere doesn't even amount to rounding error on their P&L. It's not an amazing business to get into but it's steady easy money. Boomers like their little 3% dividend yield.
When Americans start to consume significantly less and eat healthier (read: less, and less processed food), then get scared. But they'll still be one of the last to go.
>>1044624
250+ stores is alot, but at the same time
>Number of locations 11,598 (November 30, 2015)
~250 stores of ~11,600 is ~0.02% of stores
>>1044663
no 2% not .02%
What's the difference between President and CEO?
>>1044378
CEO
A CEO is the highest ranking employee of a company and reports directly to the board of directors. Chief Executive Officer of a company has the responsibility of ensuring that the company is profitable and that the company is always steered in the direction of growth. He knows he will find favor of his bosses (the board of directors) only as long as he keeps raking in profits. CEO plays the role of a visionary for the company and rest of the employees look up to him because of his leadership abilities. In reality, he is the link between the board and other managers of various departments of the organization. CEO is the ship of the captain and oversees the performance of the managers and also devices strategies to help the company achieve its goals.
President
The President is always next in command to the CEO in the chain of management. The CEO puts the responsibility of running the operations of the company on the shoulders of the President. President it is who has to oversee day to day operations, sign the checks, and see the availability of raw materials and so on. While the CEO has to deal with the investors and media, it is the President who keeps the business running, doing all that the CEO asks him to do. He is the guy who actually runs the show under the guidance of CEO.
>>1044392
In the company I work for (a global corporation), the president is (in my opinion) more of a mascot.
The CEO is a link between shareholders and senior management and appoints / oversees senior management. Senior management makes day to day business decisions and these trickle down the management ladder to the common worker. There's about 8 levels of management (managers managing managers) between the CEO and the common worker.
>>1044392
>CEO
Sidious
>President

Gotcha.
Why do people network so aggressively? How do I get noticed when I couldn't care less about recruiters that don't care about me?
My classmates crawl over each other just to get face time with recruiters for a chance at a 50k salary job.I have no motivation to compete with them. I don't want to look vulnerable for a shitty job.
I have much better offers from other industries but I can't really bring that up during networking. If you're wondering why I don't just take my better offers, it's because I don't want to work in finance anymore
If you don't want a job with high competition or that requires extreme marketability, you've basically limited yourself to STEM degrees.
Hope you like math.
>>1044310
I'm extremely competitive, I'm in the top 10% of my class at a top 20 school that is heavily recruited. Our career services know me by name and often refer me to recruiters when they ask who they should look for. I get invited to our school's networking trips all across the country (canada).
As long as I don't have to stroke my dick in front of others, get me one on one with recruiters and I shine.
I don't want to work for a company that values someone based on how well they can bend over. I want to work for a company that looks at qualifications, accomplishments, and personality. People put on an act during recruitment and it's all bullshit, I know it, recruiters know it. Let's go get drinks in a casual environment and we'll see how we get along.
Then again, I have always considered myself the "arts kid" of the business students. Never really fit in with them. All talk, no substance.
I recognize how cocky I might sound, but I'm just not a fan of this recruitment process. I like developing a network through natural processes instead of attending these "networking events". It's literally just a dick waving contest.
I am taking a couple years off before going to University to save some money so that I can actually pay for it and not have to suck dicks to make up the difference between living costs and how much OSAP gives me. I am in Ontario Canada.
I was just wondering how to best get a shit-tier job or two? What exactly should my resume/interview look like? I know this is all easily google-able and yes I've seen the infographics but it really feels as though that's more for people who already graduated University and have experience/skills and doesn't really seem applicable to jobs at grocery stores and such.
1. take a shit
2. use the toilet paper to write a shitty resume
3. smear shit on the door handle of the place you are applying for, optional clothes
4. buy mc donalds or mc maples in canada
5. go online while taking a shit and apply for the shittiest jobs around
>>1041766
Thanks, good advice.
But really though, I know there's tons of resources online for how to conduct interviews for investment banking and shit but what about just a plain old regular job to earn some extra scratch?
bump desu...
How do I invent an appliance? My idea is a novel modification to a household item, think something like a rice cooker. It has niche appeal and I am confident it would succeed if marketed properly. I've been thinking about this for almost a year now and I even wrote up a product proposal draft. I personally know myself and others who would use this invention every day.
But how do I get the ball rolling? I'm just a simple IT guy, not an engineer or industrial designer. I don't have a lot of money. The concept is fairly simple but things like which electronics to use and how to program them I don't know. And how would I go about manufacturing the widget on a large scale? Any guidance at all? Thanks in advance

im exactly in the same seat as you, i have came up with alot of products over years, but those have all been forgotten, though. Today i think i came up with something that would be really big and something i could make big bucks out of.
But yeah, im stuck in the same position as you.
