why is it so hard to make money?
>>1066698
because its relative to everyone else. you need to swim fasted than not just the tide but all the other fishes as well.
>>1066702
beat me to it.
Making money is literally a competition. Pure and simple. Some will win, some will lose.
That's why it drives me nuts when people try to say capitalism is not a zero sum game.
>>1066706
I dunno. It kinda depends on the situation. The bread maker uses .50 of ingredients and sells his bread for 2.00. He made the ingredient supplier .50 richer, he gave 2 dollars of economic value to the consumer and gets to keep 1.50. If you attribute the value of the item at the level of what they were willing to pay, then we are actually talking a positive sum situation.
Then you have people like divorce lawyers, who destroy family units for large sums of money. This is, depending on how you look at the family unit destruction, either zero sum or negative sum.
Can my American /biz/ please explain how and why this is allowed to go on?
At which point did the US economy decide it's OK to allow the private sector to control the prices of life-saving medication, and at the same time prohibit the import of the same medication from abroad?
Has the line between government and business completely disappeared over there?
I know this is somewhere between /biz/ and /pol/ but we all know /pol/ is a bunch of edgy 14 year olds so I'm asking you, as I'm genuinely interested.

>Corporations "buy" legislators through lobbying and campaign contributors
>Public too ignorant to care
That about sums it up.
Is the majority of people so delusional that they somehow identify with the billionaires that run this system instead of the vast majority of people who suffer from it?
Drugs cost what they do in the US because we're subsidizing socialist governments in Europe.
can someone explain in simple terms what tax I have to pay as an Australian investing in nyse or nasdaq?
Foreign source income tax
>>1068340
Gains on selling the investments will be subject to Australian capital gains tax, exactly the same as selling domestic shares. The exception would be if you were a professional share trader, in which case you would treat the shares as trading stock, but I don't think you would be asking this question if you were a professional share trader.
Dividends may be subject to withholding tax in the US. You have to declare the full amount of the dividend (ie including the tax that was taken out) as assessable income in your Australian tax return. You can then claim a foreign income tax offset for the US tax.
Example (assume amounts are converted to AUD): You buy $100k in US shares today. On 20 June 2016 and 15 January 2017, the company pays dividends worth $1k each. US tax is withheld from the dividends at 15%, so you actually receive $850. On 10 May 2017 you sell the shares for $110k.
In your 2015-16 tax return, you include $1k as assessable income (even though you only got $850 in your pocket) and you can claim a foreign income tax offset of $150 to cover the US tax you paid.
In your 2016-17 tax return, again you'll have $1k from the dividend and FITO of $150. You'll also include a capital gain from selling the shares. This will be the amount you sell them for ($110k) minus the cost of acquiring them ($100k) multiplied by 50% because you held them for over 12 months. So your net capital gain is $5k, which is then included in your assessable income.

thanks, whats the percentage taxed if held for less than 12 months? i.e. a few hours
Who's more based?
>>1068198

if/when you were 18 what knowledge would/did you gain from the internet that you could recommend to others -- books, lectures, video series ect.
Knowledge of interest rates is very important.
Is going through the khan academy videos on finance or economics worth it?
I've gone through the basic stuff of interest rates, debts, and tax sections.
Essentially, I want to learn how to waste my money on the stock market. Where is a good place to learn how?

Is now a good time to buy into oil? It is at an all time low and will stabilize soon.
>>1068194
Its about as stable as Russian bombs falling on turckroaches disguised as ISIS in Syria. Its too early to buy oil.
/biz/ I'm 21 with a degree and no job. Am I failure please say no and that living with my parents is ok
>>1068132
I'll be 34 in a few weeks. Living with my parents. Does that help?
>>1068132
You're an inherently valuable human being who makes your loved ones happy! Living with your parents is completely ok. Although you may not see yourself as successful now, with a little determination, you'll be able to achieve your goals!
I make $15k (liquid) a month but I spend a lot of time to make it happen... how can invest my money without spending too much time (I don't have the energy or motivation to learn how to play the stock market, ect.)
I need something I can set it and leave it
Suggestions?
Pick a Vanguard Mutual Fund. They all are about the same.
How do you bake so many cookies op?
>>1068099
Just buy some index funds in a first world country. Your money will follow the market so the risks and rewards aren't that big. The market tends to grow a little bit more than inflation every year. Unlike most bank accounts.
Hi /biz/, what do you advice to a guy who's lazy as fuck but wants to make easy money in a legal way? I have no skills, only thing I have is an IQ of 140. How can i use it? Pls help, even long term is fine.
You sound like I hate you.
Invest money in a developing economy.
You're too smart to work. Society owes you a living wage.
Apply for neetbux and ask that your disbursements be paid in Ethereum.
What do yall think about this? Pretty smart of the Mouse to have its opening coincide with the release of the next movie.
And star wars battlefront times their game with #7

What books have you read, if any, that you would recommend to a beginner?
I'm not looking for get-rich-quick bullshit but instead a book that introduces me to the basics concepts about investing and the stock market
Any recommendations, /biz/?

Just another example of a college education going to waste.
Why do you put your high school diploma on your resume if you have a college degree? There's a lot of wasted space, include stuff like honors and awards.
>>1056233
>No honors, awards, or GPA
>No experience (paid or otherwise) relating directly to your degree
I look at this and think, "This is a very boring person with no desire to move up in the world" which is the opposite of what I should be thinking
