Biz.
I went for an interview, then a few weeks I went for a follow up talk. After this talk, they asked me to send them a copy of my Driving Licence, proof of National Insurance and Passport. What does that mean ? Did I get the job ? They didn't say yes or no.
Sounds like they're stealing your identity, I wouldn't do it anon. Tell them to suck it, send dick pic
Just censor the stuff they would need to get a loan and a creditcard in your name etc.
Yo /biz/,
I lost my job as a investment specialist at an online broker a while back. When you're investing and run into problems such as trade violations , not receiving a dividend, electing shareholder options, etc youd talk to someone like me on the phone. I have a series 7 and 63. If anyone is interested in stories from working there or questions I'd be happy to share.
I did not give financial advise as part of my job so won't give it here.
Did you ever jag off in the bathrooms or at your desk?

Nah, a coworker did yank one in the restroom tho

Would you consider it a satisfying job? Would you do it again?

CDOs are mostly just another way for banks to take your money
>not realizing you only need 500k in blue chip 3% dividend stock to retire comfortably on
>not setting aside at least 1.5k a month
>not investing in high cap good momentum securities/safe etfs for consistent 5-10% returns at a time
>not using basic analysis tools to spot supports, trends and whether or not your stock is bouncing out of deviations but instead trying to time daily swings and being ruled by fear and greed
>not realizing you can nail 500k in about 3 years with good investing and saving practices on a 50-70k a year job
Shiggy
This is awful bait, you didn't even put anything on the hook.
>>1070870
$500k is the minimum I would need to retire. My plan would be to invest it all in 7%-8% yielding investment grade bonds though for a a safer $35,000 - $40,000 annual cashflow. Still, you would need to save and reinvest a percentage of this to keep up with inflation. I would also have to move to a rural area with a low cost of living and wouldn't have very much extra money to do some of the things I want. One thing I've found is that if you already have $500k saved, you are probably only about 5 years of saving and investing away from being a millionaire so I would just stick out those extra years for much more security.
3 years is pretty unrealistic though man. 10 years is probably more like it under very ideal circumstances.

I know several people who have done it in 3-5, and yeah the million dollar mark is tempting as well I feel you.
Is Stats the best degree for a student needing to prepare for a student that needs to take the GMAT to get into a top school? I'm currently Finance major, in my second semester, but may try a double major.
Stats + Finance plus a mfin is god mode if you want to get on the street.

Thoughts on Saipem? They're really low now and the Iran deals seem promising.

Let's talk investing. Which is a better option today for someone with a finance background? Picking individual stocks? A mututal fund? OIr going with an index fund with the market in the shitter? What do you all think/what are you doing? What are your returns so far? Opinions on the market in the future?
>>1070112
If you've got a finance background, go with stock picking.
Consumer accessible Mutual funds are garbage at the moment.
Index funds aren't a bad idea if you're confident we've hit the bottom but I'm not.
Oil is probably heading to the low twenties.
The Dow will probably hit 14,5k before 20k.
I'm an active trader and I liquified everything just before the rate hike because I figured something like this might happen.
You'd ideally have a mixed portfolio of stuff. and seriously mutual funds in 2016.
60% of the capital should be actively allocated. for risk management.
of that 60%
something like a 20% x 5 portfolio would be
tbt
gld
spx
qqq
and an optional vix / discretionary slot
You'd be long right now till it gets toppy and reverse the position.
sell puts after every drop.

What are your oil/CAD predictions, family?
>Tfw got trolled into probably losing all my money
>Buy VFV when CAD is around 0.70
>CAD goes to 0.71
>TSX IS UP AND OIL EXPECTED TO BE UP SOON
>Literally bought at the worst time and going to lose a ton of money if it keeps going up
Should I sell now and buy the same ETF but CAD-hedged?

>He actually listened to his parents
Protip: NEVER listen to your parents, do the opposite of what they suggest
My parents:
>"Anon teach us about investing! How do we get started?"
Next day
>"Anon you know you shouldn't study Finance because there's going to be a huge depression and no one will need Financial analysts or anything, right?"
Yeah ok mom.
Hi /biz/
I started living a frugal live since February 2015 and actually managedto save a lot of money, whilst maintaining a decent quality of living. I worked hard on myself and actually got ahead in my job much faster than expected.
So I decided by the end of the year to reward myself with a new smartphone, clothes, and an expensive bag, all whilst spending a ton of money on christmas gifts on my family and my gf.
My parents saw my progress last over the past year and gave me a very expensive watch for christmas that I absolutely loved for no particular reason.
So two days ago I got mugged in the subway, loosing my new smartphone, my bag and also my watch. I am somehow devastated by this loss and I don't even understand why it hurts me so much. It goes even so far that I cant eat or sleep well, just because I lost material possesions.
Why does it hit me so hard and how should I cope /biz/?
At least you should have learned the value of insurance, and to carry mace or something similar.
Cope by kicking ass. Also, try to remotely root the smartphone and brick it. Alternately, you can message to your phone and offer to buy it back.
The smartphone should be insured through the provider. The bag and the watch may actually be covered through Renters insurance if you've got it.
If not, report the phone as stolen to the manufacturer and they'll brick it for you.
What's probably eating at you is how vulnerable you felt being mugged. I've been there. You'll be radically insecure for a few weeks then it'll be okay. Chalk up the loss, mumble some racist stuff, feel better.
I'm sure you've got a few gun-nut friends who won't shut up about it, but if you're living amongst the darkness you really should have a concealed carry. Just try not to impulsively murder the guy if you ever run into him again.
partly guilt from buying that shit in the first place. materialism isn't good dude. Don't just buy shiny shit because you can, reward yourself with increased investments, or spend money on stuff that can improve your value at work.
call me thrifty but I always want to see a return on my spending. I've always found conspicuous consumption is an addiction and it feels like one--you have to project all this value into this shit you don't really need--if it goes south you realize you only lost ego nothing really valuable so you're confronted with this cognitive dissonance
My grandfather died a few weeks ago and I've been informed that I'm due to receive $3.6mil AUD inheritance.
I come from a relatively low-middle class background and have no idea what to do with this money. I see people here saying to Buy Etherium? Should I do that?
Do I just put it all in a savings account? Is there people to ask about things like this?
What should I do with the money?
See a financial adviser
>>1070505
Does that cost money? I don't have any money until I get the inheritance.
>>1070501
You should at least buy a small amount of ethereum.
3.6 million dollars is a lot of money and although ethereum looks like a highly interesting long shot, i would never suggest putting your eggs in one basket.
I suggest investing in a real world business, such as a taxi company, mechanic, pub, if you part own one of those you can easily dodge the tax man.
Only queers put their money in stocks or "funds".
How was Martin Shkreli able to raise the HIV drug by 5,000% Is it capitalisms fault or the governments?
Government's, as usual.
Shows how flawed the insurance system is.
>>1067287
It took less than a week for another company to make a huge PR coup by undercutting him. This is a textbook victory for both capitalism and the government that protects this system.
>>1067287
Just another reason why a true free market economy wouldn't work and why government intervention is sometimes necessary. Here's the thinking of your average free market anarchist:
>Price gouging wouldn't happen if competition was allowed! The market would have corrected this if it was truly free. We should do away with drug patents so that anyone can make this drug.
What these people fail to understand though is that without drug patents this drug would have never been made in the first place. Why would a pharm company spend an enormous amount of money on R&D to develop drugs if another company could just steal the patent and rip them off? Patents promote innovation and without the enforcement of them it would stifle that innovation.
I'm considering picking up a new hobby, making money on sportbets (while knowing next to nothing about sports). Now I know this sounds like a recipe for disaster, but please keep reading.
I started reading some book on gambling (by a somewhat reputable sharp bettor, I think). The guy obviously knows what he's talking about and he can make better decisions by interpreting the publicly available news better than most.
Instead of doing this, I'm considering line shopping (aka scanning a wide array of bookies regularly and betting on lines that are clearly overvalued by mistake). Of course I'll have to implement some anti-ban features in order not to get banned, and also take into account the bookie's vig, the odds of the bet (probably not wise to bet on a 7.50/+650.00 line) etc
Anyway, my main concern here is whether this would indeed be +EV in the long run (aka will I make money) or am I overlooking something? I think my reasoning is flawed however I can't really say why
not sure whether /biz/ is the right board for this, the rules say nothing on gambling.
>>1070741
It's not a bad idea. Betting small on long-shots until one pays off big-time. I see no reason why it wouldn't work, but you'll need a few thousand dollars of seed capital to make it work, and you may have to setup some shady banking depending on the gambling laws in your country.
>>1070741
if you already have access to the lines you will monitor without needing to place bets why don't you try paper trading for a bit? from your post it doesn't appear you have your betting strategy down yet (you need to bet more when you have higher EV, ala kelly criterion). keep a ledger and pretend you're actually betting with like 5k for a few months and see how you do. if it's going well and you've figured some stuff out you can start actually putting money down. if it's going horribly you saved yourself some cash.
a How to make college = money? thread with a twist: ONLINE COURSES
So today I bring to you /biz/ my situation. Consider I am an average 20 year old with an above average learning aptitude. I want to go back to school but I suffer from severe social anxiety. Even taking my add medication I can't concentrate on thoughtful subjects like math or programming whenever I'm in close proximity to other people.
However I've been presented an opportunity to take online courses to atleast get myself degree.
My question to you is: Is online even worth? The college game is mainly about making connections. Can a decent living be made from a degree online while also landing a job that can be done in solitude?
I'd like to hear similar stories and their outcomes. I don't want to waste my parents money if I know my anxiety will ultimately doom me anyway
>>1070665
Dude you need therapy not school. What goods a degree with you stuck in a basement?
Google "rational emotive behavioral therapy"
You think you'll be able to get and keep a job in this economy with social anxiety.
Order of Operations bro. Fix your fucked up hormones and emotions first.
Please read this. It shows how one guy went step by step to solve this.
