OK, so I will be meeting with an asian business man tomorrow who will potentially be buying a property from me. We have met on several occasions before, so we have established some rapport. However, I'm not 100% sure if he is buying so I don't want to go overboard. I think he is from Taiwan, but not completely sure. Should I get him a gift? If so, what and how much should I spend? Any other tips?

Come into my thread to hear about my great new idea for a nonprofit organization and offer advice or tell me I'm an idiot.

Now, many of you know what carbon offsets are, but for those of you who have never heard of it, it's basically a system of credits that different organizations allow you to purchase that count as "negative" greenhouse gas emissions. Individuals and organizations can purchase what are effectively shares in conservation and green energy projects, such as reforestation or wind farm construction, that can be calculated to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere by some certain amount per dollar. These credits are used to "offset" the buyer's own greenhouse gas emission, either for moral or regulatory reasons. Various national and international legal precedents have been set that ruled that this "actually counts," so for example governmental operations and corporations subject to emissions caps can emit x tons of greenhouse gases over the legal limit and purchase x carbon offset credits and legally be in the clear.

Now, my idea is very similar, but for carcinogens.

Cancer Offsets is a concept for a nonprofit organization that will offer credits for quantified cancer reduction. With data from the CDC and WHO about the number of people with different types of cancer and their average treatment time or mortality rate, how that number has changed over time, information about how the majority of charity money towards cancer is allocated (i.e. to research firms, hospitals, etc) and how much, I will create a "donation portfolio" representing that allocation and use statistical analysis to calculate the reduction in cancer-hours per dollar spent on research and support efforts per cancer type. I will then be able to sell "cancer offsets," or shares of that donation portfolio that can be said to offer a quantified reduction of cancer per unit purchased.

This can be offered at point of sale when consumers buy many products that cause cancer or whose manufacture or disposal effect the emission of carcinogens into the atmosphere or groundwater. This includes many things, including plastics with carcinogenic manufacture byproducts, cigarettes, cars and plane tickets, and the list goes on. Thus people will be able to know that they live a lifestyle that does not contribute to cancer.

What is more, corporations accused by the courts of causing cancer will now have a way out. The legal precedent is already there. Fracking companies, Philip Morris, any company that gets accused of dumping shit into a river-- will all be able to legally say their actions do not cause cancer. It is both a legal salvation and incredible PR move.

So will I get rich? what does everyone think?

The yield on Japan’s benchmark 10-year government bonds fell to zero for the first time, an unprecedented low for a Group-of-Seven economy, as global financial turmoil and the Bank of Japan’s adoption of negative interest rates drive demand for the notes.
The 10-year yield has tumbled from 0.22 percent before the BOJ surprised markets with the decision on Jan. 29 to introduce a minus 0.1 percent rate on some of the reserves financial institutions park at the central bank. It fell four basis points to zero percent as of 10:17 a.m. in Tokyo.

Not even accounting for inflation, you now get back less in ten years than you initially give.

If companies/governments/whatev want to have quotas of female workers to have diversity, and that women complain that females earn less, why dont more guys become "transgender", apply for jobs as women, fill the quotas and raise female average earnings while still being as efficient as guys?
4 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>1083991

It wouldn't raise average female earnings.

Transgenders would be considered a different category soon enough, and they would reduce the overall wages of both groups.

But I like angry feminists, so why not?

They're complaining about how they could be part of the sss soon. Why not convince people to go trans to fuck them over?

Hey /biz/,

I have a little over 5K saved and I'm thinking about investment opportunities. I currently work a job that pays a little 30K a year. I don't have any major expenses and I have almost no debt so it has been relatively easy to save up this money in a short period of time. I've considered just dumping the money into a Roth IRA but I've had a lot of luck reselling toys and collectibles in the past so I was thinking about maybe just buying a ton of stuff and sitting on it for a higher ROI.

TLDR Version: How would you guys invest 5000 dollars?

Pay off the debts, then save up 6 months of expenses in an emergency fund, then save up 20% for a housing fund (house prices will crash like a motherfucker in 10-15 years when the target market is broke millenials), then start investing.

You're a decade away from being able to invest.

Hello,

Liquidator here. Green energy companies account for 90% of my business.

They live on government subsidies. The second the subsidies stop, or slow down, the company is dead.

>>
>>1083872
Yeah, it's really hard to compete on EROEI terms with fossil fuels. Everything else is really just an energy sink and a bit of Jevons paradox.

Green energy is a deceptive misnomer, synthetic energy is more apt. I would guess with all the manufacturing and processing thrown in, it could even be called black hole energy. It has very particular niche applications.

/biz/, I want a job in finance, but I don't know where the fuck I'd fit in.

My skillset is a bit weird:
>started out in sales for a tech startup because I'm good with languages
>sales wasn't for me, changed to another team that does somethign approximating Business Intelligence/Growh Hacking/ Lead gen, kind of a weird mix
>Now have decent python and SQL, but am not engineer-level
>Have also developed serious excel skills

What could I do in finance with that skillset? I'm expecting that I'll need to upskill, just not sure in what direction

Hey /biz/,

I'm currently in a tough cookie situation as to picking the ideal candidate for my company. There are two final candidates to consider, and I need advice as to which specific candidate would be the most optimal for the growth of my company.

A little bit of context:

The company I work for is Food ABX, and what we essentially do, is sell an opulent amount of food to many of our distributors.

We've recently opened a branch of our company out east in the country, and in that particular branch, there are currently three Food ABX representatives: 2 (45 yo) representatives that deal with the "push" aspect of our company (which is to directly sell to new or old distributors--they deal with the distributors directly), and the other employee specializes in sales, not to distributors, but in other retailers, restaurants, street vendors, etc..

The "hard" part:

After conducting numerous interviews, the process has come down to two finalists:

First Candidate:
- 61 Years Old
- Has worked 30 years with Kraft
- Has extensive experience selling to restaurants, retailers, etc.. (specialization around the east end)
- He was cut from his old job because of job cuts (he was among the first because of his age)
- Has a huge network
- Asking 50k (+25k bonus) = 75k
- Veteran in the sales book

Second candidate:
- 25 years old
- 5 years of experience within this domain
- She worked for one of the biggest distributors (good client, and is known throughout the distributor world)
- Specializes in internal sales (takes calls, and orders. Order specialist)
- Asking 32k (+16k) = 48k
- Energetic, pragmatic, and enthusiastic

It's odd that I should be asking here, but in reality, I have no idea how to select the ideal candidate in this case.

Would you rather select the one with more experience, yet old? Or the other way around?

Hello Biz
I am going to have to make a choice of what to specialize in in my engineering school.

I got to choose between mechatronics, telematics and design

In design we will learn about cad and Catia

Telematics will pretty much be about microcomputers and circuts

In mechatronics we will build some automated systems and so fort.

I am leaning towards mechatronics but that means i wont learn about entreprenourship and building your own product which is mandatory in the other specilazations

Any thoughts are welcome

Mechatronics 2nd year here, mechatronics is a lot about putting existing technologies together to create solutions, where I study mostly in the industry field. So we focus on automation, making robots and such.

I also want to start my own business someday, and the advantage I have is that I can build my own machines.
So when I create/find a product that I want to produce and sell, I can make a factory that's fully automated.

I did electrical engineering for a year, but quit because it wasn't innovative at all. Projects and learning were so standard and felt like you weren't making or creating anything at all. I like programming, but I like to see the work that I make visually too.

If you don't like programming I would go for design (I hope industrial design), if not go for mechatronics.
