Hey guys I work for a small company of a dozen or so people. CEO works on site. I want to ask for a promotion to a new title and a raise with it. There is no official HR here, do I ask the ceo direct or the production manager directly above me.

hey I'm a mechanical Engineer who's looking to go into investment banking in Toronto area.
Is anyone here in a similar situation, who was able to successfully switch?

I graduated in December, and have been working in the auto industry since June. I know some programming in Matlab, and C++, but I don't have any finance background.

Question is, is it possible? would it help get noticed if I took some courses in finance through edX, and got my CFA?

op what automaker are you working for?

I work for a t1 supplier and am planning on going back to school for a Mech E degree and hopefully get on at the manufacturer
>>
>>1104548
I'm at a T1 supplier as well. one of the big 3 is the dream if investment banking doesn't work out. Are you in Michigan?
>>
>>1104543
its a lot harder to switch than people will tell you, not only is landing an ib job as a non finance/eco major very challenging, but having it not be your first job out of school is even more so. ibs hire out of school, and they hire out of internships. both of which you already missed the deadlines on.

there are so many fucking people who think they can just walk into ib with a random stem degree it blows my mind, you watched too many movies

How important is it to write a business plan BEFORE you start your business?

I'm thinking of starting my own fabrication business, but am wondering whether I should write a business plan straight away or see whether I can get some customers first?
2 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
It depends on how much you intend to invest in it, also time-wise.

If it's just a couple hundred dollars that you dont mind losing you can do what you want. But if you have to set uo a business, get a loan and and so on you should consider and overthink the situation carefully. So there are no surprising that you havent considered. It's mostly a tool to aid you, but also a means to sell your business to others.

Okay /biz/, I'm looking to get into aircraft leasing, so I need to learn financial modelling.

I did some finance modules in college (like a retard, I chose to do a business masters), but not modelling.

I'm breddy damn good with excel thanks to my current job, and also have a decent amount of python and sql, so should be able to handle a basic analyst job there from the sound of it, with the exception of financial modelling.

Where should I start with learning this? Any advice from banking/leasing people?

No interesting pictures relating to this, so have some Roon-roon

Tried makig this in /adv but no help there.

Thinking about being a personal trainer.

Should I go to college in kinesiology or a different major or not at all ? BA/AS? Would the extra money be worth it?

Should I get certified right out of high school and try to get a job at a local gym(while going to college/not going to college, depending)?

Btw, GPA is 2.4 as 18y/o junior who hasn't taken ACT/SAT yet.

I guess I could drop out, get GED and get certified but that seems way risky down the road.

Get the fuck out of here and get your grades up before you even think of a future career. With a 2.4, no college is ever going to accept you.

5s bars.

My average trade lasts about 45 seconds.

It would be more appropriate to call what I'm doing Scalping than swing trading.

Hey /biz/.

So, I'm looking to hold some gold, silver or whatever bars for the sake of diversification, although I think commodities has a lot further downside pressure to come, hence I'm heavily invested in equities ETF.

What/Where to buy ? Where to stock a 1 oz bar ? Collect coins ?

Not searching to make a quick profit, just long term holdings, even if gold depreciates.

Ive been looking into this myself. I would go to your local coin/bullion dealer and ask roughly what their buyback prices are for various types of metals. I was just gonna buy bars/rounds since they're cheaper, but you also get back less when you sell them. The gold eagles/silver eagles are a bit more expensive, but dealers will usually give you at least a small amount over spot price for them, while you might get less than spot for rounds/bars. I haven't bought any yet, but making sure you have a proper place to sell them if need be is key i think. Also, you can sell to apmex, or other sites, but it would be a pain in the ass, plus shipping, plus risk, etc..
>>
>>1103746
I see it more as a trophy. Holding a valuable asset, others than seeing numbers on a screen when you check your vanguard account, so selling on APMEX is not a goal for me.

Which brand corresponds to gold/silver eagles ?
>>
>>1103748
I was looking to mainly hold long term too, but you never know when you might need the money, or if it looks like gold gets way overbought you might want to sell.
Gold or Silver eagles are minted by the us gov and are technically currency with a face value, although the value is nowhere near the metal value so no one really cares, but they are more "official" and popular, and people tend to trust them more. Not sure if you really care about all that, but the buy/sell spread on the eagles i think is slightly smaller than on generic bars/rounds- but that all depends on where you sell them. you will get over spot price when you sell eagles, at any reputable dealer, not sure if you'd get spot, or slightly less, if selling bars/rounds. But if you wanted to just hold forever and look at how pretty they are, some nice gold bars would be pretty good, and slightly cheaper.

I had an idea to make a "fit" Jenny Craig/meal prep service. Turns out that there's similar services but they're like $10 - $20 a meal.

What's your advice? Even though there's a few companies doing this already, I wanna see if I can offer better food cheaper/fresher/faster, etc.

What do you guys think? It's better than trying to do stupid ass surveys online and if anything I can get experience at the very least. I'm not trying to put up any money up front unless I'm pretty confident it can work.

too many regulations to make food
better to partner with an established restaurant for this type of thing
>>
I thought the same thing. At first I figured I'd make the food from home and just send it out to people. But then there's a million problems with that. I thought the same thing actually.

I'm sure bringing in more business to people wouldn't be a bad thing either.

Do oil rig workers really make $100k a year with no experience? I know they typically work 12 hour days 2 weeks on 1 week off, but it still seems too good to be true.

I'm about to turn 20, debt free, working in sales making $12/hr + commission. I wanted to start my own business, but I don't know how.to execute. So now my plan is

>work on oil rig for 1-2 years
>come back to home town with $100k-$200k in pocket
>buy some duplexes start leasing them out
>live frugally until I have about 5 units which will easily support my lifestyle
>invest more in real estate or try to start my business

Anything wrong with this plan? Do entry level rig workers really make six figures?
39 posts and 6 images submitted.
>>
First thigs first, learn yourself some basic arithmetic.

If you save half of your money(which can be hard depending on your lifestyle may be VERY difficult) you may come home with 100k in 2 years.

Nobody can save 100% of their salary(taxes etc).

It is very dangerous work, not just due to the long hours.

Why not do it for one year, buy a duplex, and then go back for another year if you feel it necessary?
>>
>>1103378
I know I wont be able to save 100%, but I've read a lot of companies provide you with living quarters and give you $50 a day for living expenses, which is more than I spend right now.

So are you familiar with working in an oil field? The pay is as good as they say?
>>
>>1103364
>Do oil rig workers really make $100k a year with no experience?

When oil is 30 dollars a barrel they make zero. When they were dying for people maybe a greenhand could make that much, but your going to be working those days off more often than not and think 14-16 hours a day not 12.

Getting hired on as a green hand now would be a fucking miracle considering how many experienced hands are unemployed.

Hello /biz/
I'm a person who has already studied petrochemical engineering. I can't find job and I need money. I've tried joining in a start up but they are going to close up.
Lurking in this board, Finance caught my attention. How can I switch to that sector? What kind of financial job do you recommend for an engineer and what I have to study?
Finance engineering?
Thanks.

If we ever actually have a global economic debt meltdown, whats stopping all the mad poorfags and a newly elected socialist government from stealing all your heaps of gold and silver?

>stock up on guns and ammo
yeah but you're still outnumbered 99.99% to 0.01%

>leave the country
The gubmint can easily bar you from flights unless you have your own $55 million private jet in your backyard

>bury my gold and silver in a safe place
The gubmint could easily trace your bank and card history

>sell all my gold and silver for profit
The gubmint would easily impose a 90% tax to redistribute the wealth in the economy

Nothing.

This is a ridiculous scenario.

You can think of anything with Alex Jones like this.

>What if you're not actually alive and you got attacked from behind while walking home one night and hit your head on the concerete and are now in a coma and everything that's happened for the last 2 years was just imagined by you

>What if you work hard all your life to earn millions then all of a sudden there's a zombie apocalypse and all money is worthless

>What if you train for bodybuilding your whole life then you lose your legs in a car accident and a brick falls on your head and gives you brain damage

>What if I buy my favorite new car but then it explodes as I'm driving it and the wheels fly off on the highway and I die in it

>What if the floor in my house collapses as I'm walking and i fall and die on day?

What are your opinions on Unions, do they now do more harm than good?
35 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Referring to labor unions if anyone is unclear.
>>
>>1102780
They were needed like 100+ years ago when workers were falling into meatgrinders, falling off buildings and little children were dying in coal mines

Now they just want more gibsmedats and bully anyone who doesn't meet their ridiculous demands
>>
There's plenty of potential abuses in how they're run, but unions are often absolutely necessary to create a level playing field for labor negotiations. Capitalism assumes some degree of equanimity between buyer and seller, and unions help ensure that remains true for collective wages.

You can't believe in capitalism without believing in unions.
