Hey /biz/, just signed up for Upwork today as a way to expand my experience into Freelancing, and as a way to (hopefully) make money while not at my other two jobs. I want to get your guys' take on freelancing in general, and if any of you have any experience with it, or with Upwork (or previously oDesk and Elance), and if so, what are some tips to someone just starting out. General Freelance thread I suppose.

Get EVERYTHING in very clear writing. I did freelance web dev and it's bullshit what people try to pull. Personally wasn't for me, instead took a contracting job working from home.

No need for the negativity, just looking for info.

Hi, I don't know where to find this information and looking for it would seem to take up a lot of time, so I thought I would ask here.

For the layman who wants to trade in stocks and bonds, he/she must go through an institution to access the markets. The institution also provides services such as maintaining a portfolio and account of the transactions.

I however disdain this as I feel I do not have true control over my finances. The institution could close out my account and bar my access to my securities and money. And while not a large concern I do have to pay a monthly fee which I see as vulture capitalism at work, mainly capitalizing on my lack of information.

What I want to know is, how do institutions attain access to the markets and how can I bypass the institutions altogether and maintain my own portfolio and access the markets independently? A different way of wording this is why should I even go through these brokerage firms in the first place? Or, imagine I want to set up my own brokerage firm, where would I start to find the information necessary to do this?

In the future, what is a good resource to look for answers to these questions besides 4chan?

Last week, Stanford University announced that more accepted students won’t have to pay anything for tuition, which normally runs nearly $46,000 a year.

Students whose families make less than $125,000 a year and have assets worth $300,000 or less, including home equity but excluding anything that they have saved in retirement accounts, won’t have to pay tuition. Students whose families make less than $65,000 also won’t have to pay for room and board, which can run about another $14,100. Scholarships or grants will cover the costs instead, and the school has a $21 billion endowment. The thresholds were previously $100,000 for free tuition and $60,000 for free room and board.

Students will still have to contribute at least $5,000 a year from part-time work during the school year, working during the summer, and/or savings.

“Our highest priority is that Stanford remain affordable and accessible to the most talented students, regardless of their financial circumstances,” said Provost John Etchemendy in a press release. “Our generous financial aid program accomplishes that, and these enhancements will help even more families, including those in the middle class, afford Stanford without going into debt.” The school says that 77 percent of undergraduates leave without student debt.

When something is free, there is less of it.

How much has enrollment grown at Stanford in the last 10 years? I'm guessing very little. Thus, thousands of students are denied an education at Stanford because of their regressive business practices.

Why not cut costs, increase efficiency, grow enrollment and cut the tuition price?
>>

>Why not cut costs, increase efficiency, grow enrollment and cut the tuition price?

Because the policy of federal student loans and aids makes it unappealing to do this when they could just guarantee income from the government via these sources.

If we got rid of the Department of Education, tax credited everyone the federal wasted funding, and opened education up to the marketplace rather than being subsidized to the point that competition just can't happen, we'd see quality go up and prices go down.

unless they're selecting people or setting aside places based on this then no...

if they're selecting students as usual but allowing the poorer ones of those selected to get this subsidy then it doesn't seem too bad

much better than any affirmative action nonsense that could see, for example, Will Smith or President Obama's offspring being let in to some college with a lower grade simply due to being black

Where did you learn about investing? I'm talking square one, learning basic terms and that. I don't see a sticky anywhere on here, so can someone refer me to some good reading/websites/other resources that helped them along?

I'm a 23 y/o college student, I do semi-skilled physical labor, and I want to find something new to learn in my spare time that might make a little money on the side. Thanks

Am I fucked if I study English in college?

I live in Ireland so third level education is pretty much entirely paid for by the government (no student loans). I've been studying business outside of school for a year and would consider pursuing it but I wouldn't want to study it in college.

I really want to study English for personal reasons, am I unbelievably fucked once I graduate?

What's better, a Master in business and economics, from a prestigious university or an Msc in finance, from an only somewhat prestigious university?

prestigious is way better, not close

as long as its prestigious in a real sense and not "the community college thats the talk of the local dennys" prestigious

that name matters so fucking much, more than the degree

It's one of the best in my country and it's ranked among the top 100 in the world in several different rankings (not top 10, but still). I know a professor who works at said university, and according the her the name is internationally recognized.

Does this sound prestigious or am I exaggerating?

I was talking to a friend who is learning how to trade forex, stocks and all that jazz. So he basically started trading forex with the so-called "microlots", meaning he would either win a few dollars or loss a few dollars.

How do people go broke with this shit if you can practice risking literally pennies? Seriously.

Hi /biz/, I've recently come into an inheritance (roughly 30k) and I've had enough of working dead end jobs. I want to be able to do some sort of skilled labour that can get me out of my parents house so, im looking into taking a course in machining and CNC programming because im sort of an autist and enjoy that type of stuff. Furthermore i build guitars and instruments as a hobby and figure if that goes anywhere i can use the knowledge i gain to cnc everything including hardware in order to cut down on cost. Is machining worth getting into in terms of job outlook and if so what schools would be worth looking into? I apologize if this is the wrong board i just didn't really know where else it would belong.

>>
>>1108668
Hold up, I'm still stuck on why you chose to ejaculate into your inheritance?
>>
>>1108668
as long as you're on the design side of machining you're fine, but you're going to get memed on by actual pengs and people who know what the fuck is going on instead of just how to use a piece of software

if you're on the labor side of machining expect to get cucked out of a job the second you land one by mechanization

you arent going to get good advice on this on biz though its too specific just google that shit
>>
>>1108728
The design sign of machining? You mean programming for cnc? Most courses include that
