>Location: Vancouver, BC, Canada
>Degree: B.A.S.c in Mechanical Engineering
What I tried:
>going to groups on meetup.com
>> (2) language meetups, 2 culture meetups, 1 soccer meetup, 1 dancing meetup, a few toastmasters meetups.
>Meeting randoms in the street.
Result:
Continuously running into losers, and I can't blame them because there doesn't seem to be any decent jobs here. It is Location, Location, Location. Considering using information interviews overseas (or in the US) as a means to network.
How do you network biz?
You're really bad at deconstructing a problem for an engineer.
>define exactly what you hope to achive and give yourself a precise timeframe and steps to achieve it.
I want to launch my engineering consulting firm within the decade. I'll need experience so I'll start the career in another successful consulting cabinet first.
>Define and list the types of persons that will be able to meet your needs.
I'll need a job, money then clients. So i need to meet successful top of the ladder engineers that can get me in a firm, I'll need access to venture capitalists, bankers, investors or businessmen looking for things to put their money in, institutional or personally.
Then I'll need to access a pool of instutions or corporations that are looking for my services.
>Establish a systematic way to target physically those groups of people and put the mechanisms in place in order to meet them, contact them, or better have them contact me first.
Engineers can be met at trade shows, alumni networks, headhunters offices or even at their own offices.
Venture capitalists are often involved in vhnw type activities like private bank sponsorized events like golf open, classic car shows, auctions, charity events, philantropic stuff and 5 star hotel lobbies.
>Leverage what you know, can do, or might do, who you know, where you can go to exchange favors and leave good impressions.
Go to a general bank annual conference on private banking. Meet low level fund managers that are looking for investments exchange cards.
Go to local hacker maker club to hang out and how surprising to meet engineers doing pet projects to relieve boredom of a career stalling. Leverage your fund manager contact against a 'when i finish my degree can you maybe get me a interview pretty please? '. You make things Happen for people. Stay in contact.
>Practice your small talk, seduction, leveraging of wants and needs, social grace on the loser circles, immediate social circle and meetups groups as practice.

Thanks, this is immensely useful. I'm setting it as my wallpaper.

Cheese pizza pic related OP?
>This is because wolves have larger brains and thus are more intelligent.
>Perhaps the biggest difference between a wolf and a dog, and also the thing that causes the most problems when owning a wolf is their mental state. Dogs only develop to the mental stage of a 10 to 30 day old wolf puppy. This means that mentally dogs never become adults, which allows humans to be able to tell a dog what to do because dogs want to please us. This lack of mental maturity also makes dogs more aggressive than wolves, since aggressiveness is many baby animals’ natural defense.
>Wolves reach maturity at 2 to 3 years of age. Up until this point their minds are very much like that of a dog. When wolves do finally reach maturity, they become very independent, and possessive of anything that happens to find its way into their mouth. It is usually at this point that people who own a wolf or a hybrid find that they have an animal they can no longer control.

It's true to a certain extent from what I've seen. People who've started their own business trend to be a little misanthropic or abrasive, my way or the highway types.
That shit just doesn't fly in normal jobs, you need teamwork and a one hand washes the other mentality.
So rather than going for a regular gig, they have to do their own stuff. Otherwise they have a hard time getting jobs and staying employed.
>>1403007
it really depends how you measure intelligence
dogs beat the shit out of wolves in many things and the general conclusion was wolves are stupid as hell and dogs got smarter but the truth is dogs learn better from humans wolves learn better from each other and dogs. funny that. neither is more intelligent per say their focus is on very different things.
>>1403075
your comparison is faulty as wolves are way more social and cooperative with each other than dogs they just don't give a shit about humans lol.
cold emailed a hedge fund and expressed my interest in working at the firm, becoming a valuable asset, etc in addition to sending my resume.
i got this as a response.
what does it mean, and how should i respond if at all?
>>1402949
Basically to keep looking.
It means "don't call us, we'll call you"
>>1402949
It means they will go through it and may get back to you. I wouldn't get your hopes up but who knows? They might want a 'valuable asset' around to make the tea and clean the toilets

Why isn't there an app for super basic services like: computer repair, oil change, house cleaning, babysitter, tutor, driving lessons.
Basically any job that takes cash money. Take those jobs away from big business that just take a cut from their employee's wages.
>>1402869
What is TaskRabbit
Also this doesn't work that well, every idiot is trying to make "the uber of X" type apps basically, and very few of them will take off or be sustainable. There's more overhead than people think.
>>1402869
There are tutoring apps. They suck, btw.
You can just use craigslist. It's the same fucking thing
>company has reserves to run for another five years
>goes ahead and files for bankruptcy, all shares lost all value
>in the bankruptcy proceedings, they are bought out
The company that just bought this company did so at an extremely unfair price, fucking over all shareholders. Isn't this illegal?
>>1402830
fucking should be
>>1402830
Don't the shareholders have to agree to file for bankruptcy, seeing that they - you know - own the fucking company and all.
>>1402859
considering the share class im holding, i should have first dibs on anything that happens. im also going to have to talk with my broker because something's different and i feel they fucked me on this position, as well.

Been working for a while and finally have a decent savings. Im willing to use $1,000 for some sort of investing, but im a total beginner, so whats the best use for this amount of cash?
>>1402758
If you have been working "for a while" and only have 1000 USD to spare, you should probably invest in a shotgun and blow your brains out. Also kneepads.
>>1402813
Awhile meaning about one year.
>>1402758
Chuck it in an ETF and forget about it.
Change your div/cap gain setting to "reinvest".
what does /biz/ think about tim sykes? has anyone actually bought subscriptions to his stuff?
>>1402697
very punchable face
>>1402697
Scammer. Have you seen his trades? Really really shitty trader honestly. Sure he has consistent gains but nothing to really brag about.
Definition of survivor bias
I got a business idea, let me know what you guys think. Indians have problems with access to shitting on a toilet, so what if people started creating washroom facilities and then charged whoever that enters them a fee? I think it's a plausible business that could essentially work
Maybe sell porta potties to the people who have to clean the streets.
>>1402683
The problem is not the lack of facilities from what I've heard.
>>1402683
>implying pay-per-use toilets has never been seen before
>wanting to sell toilet access to people WHO LITERALLY DON'T CARE ABOUT CRAPPING IN PUBLIC ON THE STREET OR BEACH
>essentially work
aight m80 good luck
Is this a good company to trust when it comes to stock and such. I have a Complete lack of knowledge when it comes to these sort of things.
>>1402670
>trust
Trust how?
Like, will they buy McDonald's when you specify you want Tesla stock?
>>1402673
Well yes that, but is their advise solid.
I've been working for starbucks around 3 years now and they give us stock through this company. recently I've been wanting to explore what I can actually do with it. But when I call them they more or less tell me to just keep everything as is.
>>1402670
they'll fuck you with commissions, but they'll probably keep your money safe.
