Hey /biz/
Reformatting to windows 7 is shitty due to windows update and I was thinking of maybe maining linux.
Do you have experience with using linux for finance? Im particularly curious about linux alternatives for excel. Is this a bad idea?

Windows 7 is still fine, you have full control of updates.

Well, try them out yourself. Most open source office suits are multiplatform. One of my previous employers used OpenOffice in 2012. It's mostly like MS Office, they even have a few smarter features I quite liked. I didn't use OpenOffice Calc all that much, but it served all my basic needs. They have online documentation and back then it looked like it could do pretty much everything Excel could (with mostly the same function names as well).

You'll have to look into it, I believe OpenOffice sold out recently, but I'm not sure. I keep hearing LibreOffice passed around as the best non-commercial alternative to MS, but as I said - look into it yourself. You can download them and try them out, they're light-weight and easily run beside MS Office without conflict.

Since the newer MS formats (like xlsx) are XML-based, they're compatible as well.

I made a practice account on Drive wealth and did ok.

Can I use this and other practice trading sites as a resume to financial institutes?

What other neet work can I do besides programming (which I have under my belt as well) to put on my resume?

Sup /biz/,

I am looking for financial/markets news in the form of daily newscasts/podcasts of max 30min that I can watch/listen on smartphone for free. Something that I could watch on the go once a day when I want to keep me updated.
What do you recommend?

Hey /biz/, could I ask for your wisdom?

Going off to college this fall for economics and finance (double major), and I wanted to know if it would be better to work for a bank I have connections with and start climbing the ladder, or take that job/another job to start saving for my own business?
5 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Depends what you want to do when you go into business for yourself. IMO if you want to do your own small thing (0-10 employees) start saving for yourself. If you want to either grow something of significant size where you'd need to take on large outside funding (loans or equity trade) then it'll look much better to investors/debtors if you come from a well known bank/org. It gives the impression that you are a smarter money manager. I have a friend that got into one of the asset investment divisions at Wells Fargo and he learned a shit ton about and made good relationships with people in the venture capitalist realm

Thank you, I figured a medium business. Enough to outrun the smaller businesses in my area. Do you happen to know how to work for some of those top tier banks? Of course I don't expect to be directly placed in one, but I'm sure I can build up a resume?
>>

I split off from the finance realm and went into IT instead.

From my experience, anyone who can start their own projects / start entrepreneurial ventures, hold a decent GPA, and hold themselves in a professional way get gobbled up by larger companies as summer associates/interns. Once you get in that system, don't get sloppy, do you work, be a bit free thinking, dress well, and do some networking and you should get some nice exposure and experience. How long you want to stick around in that realm is your preference. The longer you stay and are active, the more knowledge and connections you accumulate; unfortunately you also get more comfortable and are less likely to leave. Figure out what your goals are and see which path best leads you there

When I started in my job last year I ended up getting the highest possible salary for my position (as allowed by the rigid pay scale of the organisation) from the start.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how silly is it of me to be upset that I can't get a raise as a result of a positive review meeting due to being maxed out?

Now I have to jew my way into a proper promotion.

Anyone else here with similar experiences? Fucking pay scales.

with experience, you will learn that the "slowlane" working, kissing ass, putting your fate in someone else's control is the most risky, arduous path. I used to look down on entrepreneurs, scrambling around buying lead lists, always shilling something different or doing cryptocoin shit so I got my MBA, worked for Ivy league VP bosses at Fortune 500 companies.

Not really, it's a publicly funded institution with very rigid pay and benefit schemes. I have to work within the system.

What are the safest long term big stocks that will beat inflation? Is apple a safe bet?

AMD
>>
>>1403896
If you want to be safe, buy ETFs and not single stocks like apple
>>
>>1403896
All of them, hence an ETF rather than one single stock.

Anyway, Apple is not the "safest" because it's a tech stock (these stocks come and go). Utilities, telecoms, consumer staples... are safer.

Make a list of all the things you've done, volunteering work, work experience, apprenticeships, degrees, etc.

Then write down skills you have, like photoshop, excel, etc.

Go from there.

>They've kept them all for 10 years, time in which they never attempted to sell.
>Time in which they could have haggled and found the perfect buyer to buy their stuff for huge amounts of cash

Also, your question is fucking stupid.

Fuck you guys I haven't made actual money on crypto trading in like 2 years, most of your shill posts have been wrong and I've been down thousands of dollars in value for years. Finally gambled right today with ETC and went back into the green overall and made over a thousand US dollars. I kept a few ETC since I'm a hoarder and it might take off but damnit, feels good taking home cash profit and still having enough leftover to still be a stakeholder.

No credit goes to /biz/. This board is always wrong. It wasn't until this morning that you bandwagoners jumped on ETC. I gambled earlier and went against the ETH shills that posted here the night before and did my own research.

This serves you right, you piece of shit. Every time I came here and told people to buy SC, SYS, MAID etc just before the pumps, fucking ETH bagholders like you showed up and came with things like "lol shitcoin"..
There are a couple of smart people on this board but its being ruined by mad bagholders like you who don't want to admit they've made the wront "investments"

Hi /biz/

Saving for property in AUS, I am wanting to buy something within three years. I need a deposit of at least 100k AUD.

Am I worth investing around $30k in index funds, or saving up for the three years in a high interest account roughly 3% P.A during the three years?

I will reach the 100k goal in 2 years.

Thanks.

Cheapest price of a 2bd unit in Melb or Sydney is about 350K if you're very lucky.
100K is the safest starting point for 20% deposit+stamp duty+other expenses.
