Check my logic.
>1. Money, up to a certain point, allows freedom, luxury, and security.
>2. Past that point, money has only two uses: degenerate hedonism and influencing power.
>3. Most politicians have legitimate and mostly legitimate ways of earning and amassing money.
>4. They also have direct access to power, which is itself a potent aphrodisiac if one is looking to sate hedonism.
>5. Most political dynasties last longer than financial dynasties, with exceptions on both sides existing.
Doesn't this mean that purely monetary success is effectively a bronze medal at best?
>>1463167
Depends if you like hedonism
I do, so personally money is my gold medal
>>1463167
>2. Past that point, money has only two uses: degenerate hedonism and influencing power.
Or providing the capital to create new businesses. Or financing unprofitable projects (charity, art, churches, football clubs...). Or creating your own country or your own cult. Whatever.
By the way, luxury has no limits. Give me one billion dollars and I'll blow that in one month just with luxury goods. Jets, yachts, jewelry and mansions are expensive, without even partaking in "hedonism".
>5. Most political dynasties last longer than financial dynasties, with exceptions on both sides existing.
No. A study of Bank of Italy shows that the top-earning families in Florence in 1427 were exactly the same as today (those who pay the more taxes today have the same surnames). Now where are the politicians of 1427?
>Degenerate
Stopped reading right there. What the fuck does degenerate even mean??? Go back to >>>/pol/
>some people unironically sold their XMR to buy cheap ETC.
It's like you want to be poor.
>>1463131
amazed at the number of people determined to trade 5 minute candles instead of buying XMR, and doing NO WORK for 7 days for virtually guaranteed 4x profit
Tell me about ETC, is it falling to 10k?
I have .5 BTC should I but XMR or hold BTC?
If you're legitimately talented as an artist, and not one of the following:
>Someone who just wants money from being a rock-star/painter/best selling writer
>Someone who just wants the social prestige of being "artistic"
>Someone who just wants a free pass to abuse substances and behave in socially abnormal ways
then why wouldn't you cash in on your artistic talents? Talented actors, writers, painters, sculptors, and musicians can easily make a living or even a fortune doing what they love as long as they are legitimately talented, it's socially prestigious, and you are your own boss after you've done the mandatory dick sucking of your publisher/record label/gallery, but everyone has to do that.
Well to answer your question a lot of artists prefer the anonymity of poverty which allows them to more purely focus on their medium and never become part of the machinery in the first place. Staying with smaller, communal art galleries, or self-publishing records.
But on the other side of the equation I've always liked what Squarepusher said:
> why wouldn’t you want to sell a lot of records? Why wouldn’t you want to get your work out to as many people as you can? As long as you haven’t ruined it in the process.
That's the key though "as long as you haven't ruined it in the purpose".
Are you doing your best work, or the work that makes the most money?
>>1463123
I don't mean actual poverty. I mean they will have a wageslave job for most of the week in an unconventional job.
>>1463123
>>1463127
Right, but even small gallery artists, self-published indie musicians, and independent writers who don't have contracts with the big six are still able to make a living through their art even if they aren't stupendously wealthy. They just have to promote their art, but spending time self-promoting is probably more fulfilling than working a job unrelated to their art, be it flipping burgers or flipping securities.
what's the most practical major today?
I'm attending Duke this fall, however, I'm going undecided. Unfortunately, I have interests considered useless in college education (music, film, art, history, politics, etc.) so It' not clear.
How awful is Law going to be by the time I get out if that's the path I choose. Would you consider it cost effective?

Wait, are you asking if law as a career is going to still be shitty in 4 years? Gonna have to practice the clarity of your writing or the professors at Duke are going to crucify you.
Law is gonna be shitty for a long time. The market is still oversaturated, both in terms of lawyers and law schools. That's not going to change in 4 years.
>Would you consider it cost effective?
haha no
The only way in which it would be "cost effective" is if you are some supergenius who pops out of Duke with a 4.0 and gets a near-full or full-ride scholarship to a T14. Then, and only then, would it really make sense.
Otherwise, you're going to be assuming $250k+ of debt and shoved into a law firm billing 80 hour weeks and regretting every second of it.

What does /biz/ think of all the fraud going on these days?
There's so much different kinds and it's crazy to consider that some people are really making millions off this stuff with really low rates of getting caught. Do you think we should try to get in on this stuff? It seems really temporary and that something is "hot" for a while, people make millions then it dies again.
But really if you did that, got a bunch of money through nefarious means but then stopped and put it all into legal business, would it really be so bad?
I don't know guys it just feels like any old retard can card or any of this other shit and they make far more money than we do wageslaving in most cases.
It just feels like everything I've learned about the world and markets and everything is false and it's all upheld on fear because anyone can do this shit it seems. I just can't fathom how there are tons of average people carding or spreading malware and living lives we'd need to save up decades for.
well?

What the fuck is going on? Why did Xtera (XCOM) jump so fucking high today? Their hardware manufacturer just terminated their contract because they weren't fucking paying them. On top of that they aren't making the minimum required to stay on the NASDAQ. This information was made public on the 22nd. How does this almost double the value of their stock? I'm so confused...

Theoretically, if the people who owned it started buying up a shitton of shares couldn't they artificially drive the price up and resell it all at once for a fat profit? The only victims of this would be people who buy because it starts going up and don't sell in time. Is the stock market just some millionaire prank on the peasants?

Can we compile a list of the best dividends to invest in with close ex-dividend dates that have high return (10%+) rates? This sounds like something /biz/, but unfortunately I'm having trouble finding both the ex-dividend dates, the pay period (yearly, quarterly, etc.) and the percentage for most stocks, usually I'll only find one or two of those.
I feel like if we make a monthly list like this, it'll be very beneficial to /biz/. I've already started on a list, looking at completing from 8/28 to 9/30.
>>1462981
Stage Stores, Inc. (SSI), Ex-dividend (EX-D) date 8/26, Payment date 9/14, 9.7% yield.
Atlantica Yield plc (ABY), EX-D date 8/29, Payment date 9/15, 8.93% yield.
American Capital Agency Corp. (AGNC), EX-D date 8/29, Payment date 9/9, 12.03% yield.
I figure I can invest the day before the EX-D date, collect 8-20% in a week, sell the stock, and re-invest with an EX-D 2-3 days after the payment date. Thoughts?

Some banks do not make any sense to me...
>Family member dies, I inherit house
>Appraised at $600k
>$200k remaining on mortgage
>Want to take over the mortgage and rent it out for easy income
>Apply for $200k mortgage
>Have 760 FICO score
>All CC debt paid off since a year ago, only have an 8k car note as debt
>No criminal record or anything like that
>Switched jobs 6 months ago for better pay, make $60k/year
>Told I need at least 2 years employment at the same place of business
>Several banks have told me this
>Another bank told me they will not deal with me because I am not using a real estate agent
>Setup meeting with local credit union vice president next week, hopefully they understand situation
Does not make any sense to me, the home is appraised at $600k. If I foreclosed on it and the bank took it over I would literally be doing them a favor as they would profit.
Anybody that works in the loan industry care to chime in?
>>1462926
>>1462926
>If I foreclosed on it and the bank took it over I would literally be doing them a favor as they would profit.
Maybe if you knew what the fuck you were talking about, you wouldn't be laughed out of every bank branch you visit, First, you can't foreclose on your own house. Foreclosing is what the lienholder does to satisfy the debt, not what the borrow does. Second, the bank would not profit through foreclosure. Foreclosure is a tool to pay a debt, and nothing more. Foreclosure does not transfer ownership to the bank, it merely forces a sale of the property. If the property is actually worth more than the debt (as you claim) then the bank would be paid what it is owed, and nothing more. You, as owner, would get the remainder.
Maybe you should do some reading and try to understand the terminology better before your meeting next week.
