The entire point is to mature, become independent and professional, polish soft skills, learn how to market yourself, make connections, and yes, learn some basic relevant information in your field so it doesn't cost a potential employer a fortune to train you in your job.
Statistics especially is an increasingly social science, with most sophisticated companies and industries investing in statistical models and analysis requiring excellent written and VERBAL communication skills, which it sounds like you need to work on ASAP if you literally have zero connections.
At least a BS in Statistics is versatile. I can't tell you what you should go for - but don't do anything for the money or you'll be very unhappy.

Own gold, silver, firearms, ammunition, cash, land, housing.. all of these things spread to different places in the world so it can never be taken from you.
This is what my great grandfather, grandfather and my father did. They never invested in or traded stocks. They hoarded all of these things with every penny they made from a normal job. Educate your children so the wealth grows.
Take this advice if you'd like. You don't need to think that I'm saying that this is what you should be doing. It's my opinion and that's all.

Grant money is won by the prof but goes through the university (not sure of the details).
But anyway grant funding is not involved in this, our business class tickets weren't covered by the department's travel budget nor grant money, the professor just decided to pay out of pocket.
He said that he has never flown economy class and doesn't plan to start.
