How much is "rich" for you guys in USD per person. Like an actual dollar amount?

I'd say if you're at the 5M mark excluding your principal residence

20 million if you're in the US.

7 million would fund the kind of lifestyle that I desire in perpetuity.

But then I'd probably want more when I got there

I've been playing poker since I was 10 or 11 (with fake money obviously) and have always been quite good at it. Recently I've been entering some local poker tournaments and playing online with small amounts of money but again have been doing well.

What are the chances I could make a career out of this if I studied strategies, worked hard and didn't lose control and take stupid risks. Or at least be my job as I go through university instead of having a wageslave casual job at a fast food restaurant.

A computer will be able to play better than you will ever be in less than 25 years. What are you going to do then?

Poker is similar to trading, you need good risk management skills, keep your head in check, and have a winning strategy.

Online poker is filled with sharks and software to give them an advantage. Better odds at an actual casino/tournament. Fuck online poker.

I recently started working at a McDonalds as a side job to earn extra money while in college. And let me tell you, we have some of the dumbest fucking people who come onto property (myself included) but here's just a few.
>People constantly walking into sliding door with sign on it with "DOESNT OPEN" in bold letters.
>People asking to unlock the bathroom when there's a sign on the door that says "Turn handle and PUSH to open." because they've only been turning the handle and expecting it to open.
>People who drive past the ordering screen and try to order at the cash register.
>People who scream "HELLO?" Into the order mic not even 5 seconds after pulling up. (Everyone working the drive through has headsets on, we know you're there we're just too busy to help your impatient ass.)
>Like seriously there was this one guy who pulled up, didn't even wait for someone to take his order, he just went right into yelling his order, then asked "Did you get that?" over and over again NONSTOP FOR 2 WHOLE MINUTES. (Trust me, I counted, I wanted to see how long he'd go on for.)
>People who ask to get a special deal that ended months ago, and get all pissy when told they can't get it anymore.
>Absolute autists who try to tell me that they want the Big Mac MONDAY special on Thursday. (Or any other day that isn't Monday.)
>Old ladies that complain that we shouldn't rush them because "I'm your customer and you're in no rush" despite the line going out of the parking lot.
>Cunts who complain about how they work in customer service therefore and that we shouldn't have any other emotion than happy because it would be bad for business for her job.
>This one jackass made us refund him a McFlurry because he thought the Oreos in it looked like bugs so he couldn't eat it.
>SJWs lecturing for asking "Is this for a boy or girl." In regards to Kid's Meal toys.
I don't eat here, so can someone tell my why this place is such a retard magnet?

Forgot to mention there's this old guy I have to work with who's mute or something. Thing is, he doesn't know sign language nor does he try to play charades to explain what he's doing, he just makes incoherent moaning noises and thinks people understand him. I think he despises me because one day I was on break and he was trying to tell me a story but I was trying to watch a video and it's kind of hard to enjoy it when there's an old man moaning at you, so I told him to just stop because I don't know what he's saying.

I'm moving to the Orlando area this Saturday and I need to find a job. I'm 18, fairly intelligent, good social skills, reliable employee. I'm a certified lifeguard and I've worked as a cashier, what is the best job I can find easily, and is going to pay the best.

I'm sure all the CEOs will stay in Portland and not move somewhere else though, preventing them from getting ANY tax dollars at all!

I was wondering how long it was going to be before someone didn't read the article. You don't have to be headquartered, or live in Portland for this to effect you.
>>
>>1587566

I'll gladly admit I didn't read the whole article, and I'm not actually American so can someone explain to me: if you don't live or do business in Portland, how can Portland's municipality tax you? Since it says they are fining people via higher taxes.

I found a pretty good name, but the .com domain is owned by some shitty clothing eShop that looks like it hasn't been used in years. What are some other domains that are worthwhile, I see a lot of sites are using .io now?

Is Americas declining standard of living a result of a more competitive, global marketplace? The influx of immigrants are making the labor pool saturated and forcing Americans to be more competitive right?

Outsourcing, and its gonna get worse for professions without a certification (accountants, engineers, doctors, lawyers will be somewhat fine). Programmers, copyrighters, artists, etc... have to either step up their game or get fucked.

If you're in North America you better be running a business and employing others than fighting for scraps. Europeans can rely on workers rights for now, but not for long.
>>
That's kind of my perspective as well. Immigrants of all nationalities are pretty entrepreneurial and lets face it, clannish. If one doesn't secure the aforementioned certified professions it'll be like living in a different country. I like how their was zero mention of unskilled laborers in your post or even tradesmen. The influx of immigrants will secure those positions.
>>
>>1587537
It is, but immigrants are not a driving factor.

Hello /biz/

I'm writing my senior economics thesis on the correlation between BTC prices and other asset classes. Obviously BTC price is my response variable but I wanted to see what you all recommend I use for my independent variables. I'm thinking of using the SPY price data, reserve currencies, some measure of interest rate on short term debt (perhaps tbill prices or the LIBOR rate), and then some other commodity like gold or oil... do you guys have any tips or advice on what other assets to track? Any tips on data management (IE, price data on SPY is easiest to look at at close price but trade days only occur M-F so should I limit BTC prices to M-F online). Thanks in advance for any help.

Normally bitcoin works like metals, it goes up when dollar goes down. but recently it did not. therefore i think there are some other forcer governing bitcoin. I belive its chinease especulation, since chine is still the biggest player in the bitcoin market. i belive china owns 95% of each bitcoin in the world. Or i can be wrong : the map i used shows me where the bitcoin is traded, by that it can only tell me in all trades done in the world 95% of them happen in chinease territory. check the map for yourself : http://fiatleak.com/. That can be lower fees or a major chinease investment. Either way, if chinese government wants to hold all that bitcoin they will get all bitcoin users by the balls.
>>
>>1587504
Your data is likely going to be very messy, as cryptocurrencies are speculation vehicles instead of sound investments.
>>
>>1587789
afaik china has a lot of mining farms because of the cheap price of electricity. Recent tax policies (the limitation of the amount of yuans allowed to be exchanged for USD) and bad news for the chinese economy created a surge of interest in bitcoin in China.

Also OP, in which university do you study and when is your thesis due? I'm also interested in bitcoin/eth for my paper in social anthropology

Can someone explain the whole tax disadvantage when it comes to not paying off a mortgage? Was reading the first comment in this post, and I just don't understand it. Why would anyone want to not pay off a house? Is the dude full of shit, or am I just uneducated?
24 posts and 3 images submitted.

Mortgage debt is a tax deduction. So unless you are retired you are often better off keeping the debt so you can get the tax deduction.

This scenario depends on the interest rate of your loan though
>>
>>1587344

How much is the tax deduction? And if it's paid off, sure, you don't get the yearly tax deduction, but you also don't have to pay 12 months of mortgage payments, which should be far more than any tax deduction could ever be.
>>
>>1587340
ok, let me help you out,

you spend a dollar in interest to save .30 in tax when you have a mortgage on a rental property.

BUT: the downside is in opportunity cost. instead of paying off your rental property mortgage, you could use it as a downpayment on another property, for additional income.

Why is insider trading illegal?

Because there is an impression among the majority of the voting population that if it were legal the "average joe investor" would be unable to compete and that if made illegal then dealing in smoke-filled backrooms will simply cease because it is illegal.

I'm a recent economics graduate. I speak three languages fluently (Spanish, English and German), I'm also a good writer and communicator. Furthermore, I've single-handedly built up analysis divisions for investment banks from the ground up, and I've been a portfolio adviser for several years to a high net individual.

Could I conceivably be a freelance financial analyst/writer/researcher for simple projects? Would people be willing to hire me over older hires, if I'm willing to undercut people's prices? I'd live a sustainable life with about 1000-1200GBP after taxes, I'm not that concerned with amassing wealth if it allows me to build a solid reputation in the meantime. In either case, reason I'm thinking outside the box solutions is that I'm finding it incredibly hard to get my visa sponsored by a company, I don't want to go back to my shit tier country as I want to stay in the EU, where I truly feel I belong. So I'm thinking that this is at least a solution whilst I apply to jobs (I've already applied to 300+ but mostly get rejected or not even considered for not being the right nationality) and build a portfolio post-university I can point to and not me immediately dismissed from consideration. I'd travel around on tourist visas and jump from country to country once they ran out. I'd mostly stay in Eastern Europe where life is cheap. Is this a reasonable plan or is this pie in the sky? Also what are the suggestions you guys have to make this plan possible?

I'm Mexican, we have literally no associations with ISIS. Stop making racist assumptions without any evidence whatsoever. Furthermore, I have European ancestry on both sides of my family, it's just that due to how the laws are structured I don't have access to either nationality without protracted, and expensive legal processes.

What uni?

Why don't you get a entry job at the ministry of economy ? It's easier and more independent than working as a freelancer.
