Throwing money at 50k in student loans like Sallie Mae will break my legs.

How should a complete beginner go about investing money and getting into the stock market? What books or online info should I read to learn and get advice from?

I realized that I've had about 10k CAD sitting in a "Q Trade" account and it's made about 1k over the year. I have no idea how it works, if that's a good amount to have made, if I actually lost money (since our dollar is absolute shit and maybe 11k now isn't as good as 10k before, etc).

I really need to get into this because I'll have another 5-10k to invest next year. I appreciate any help. Thanks guys.

Firstly, read How To Read the Financial Pages by michael brett or Accounts Demystified.

Once you can read financials, begin with a British favourite of mine, The Zulu Principle. It will teach you some good growth investing and to only look for GOOD companies. It will also teach you value investing.

Then read The Intelligent Investor for some philosophy and approach commandments which you should always follow.

Ayy /biz/

Just got into Columbia ED. Worked minimum wage two years before applying to school, and I understand that I want to make some serious cream. What should I major in to crack a million a year in time? I was a white boi without any of the pretty diversity things that help people in, and I had a 790/780 M/E SAT. While the mathematics 300k meme might be a joke, I'm thinking maths with a minor in financial ec.

Also, pre-college advice/college general from those who have advice to give.

What does biz think about gold miner stocks as a way of weathering the coming (maybe) financial storm?
After 2008 fall, they rebounded fairly quickly. And currently they're trading at about 2002 levels, very low. Even lower than 2008.
Let the debate begin!

Its overrated. Gold does not actually have 'intrinsic' value. It only has value because people think it works like cash but it really works like a stock.

But because people buy it during recessions it does work as a hedge to a point, but smart money uses it to endlessly speculate. So the value of gold rides on rich people making short term speculations and playing the futures market.
>>
>>1674157
People have been thinking that way for the last couple of thousabd years. That can't change now. Unless they find a planet made of gold.
I sincerely believe, i've found something to invest in at last.
>>
>>1674194
Its always worth money. It's not always worth what you paid for it. Look at long term prices for gold vs the value of currencies.

so what seperates CEO/CFOs from the other high positioned people in the organisation? (i'm mainly thinking about financial services organisations)

so you can have a person just progress through the ranks from an entry level, to qualified to partner etc etc but only 1 person gets to be the CEO

what does that guy have that others don't? soft skills? secret handshakes? or what
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1674087
Alright, I'll tell you.

I'm old now and soon to pass on.
67 is a bit young but what can you fo?

To become CEO, there is a special handshake. But you have to know when and who to give it to.

First, get a job. Because I know you're a jobless NEET faggot. Then find the most important looking guy you can find.

NOW, DONT give it to him yet. First find out his name. Important people like it when you remember their names. Next take em out to dinner. Most expensive place you can afford. Make it steak. If he's vegan, I don't know.

After you're done, and this is the important part.

Get into your car, pull down his pants. His penis might come out. Now this is the important bit, the handshake that will allow you to become a CEO. Three words.

Up and down.

Then start suckin

Congrats. You win.

C-level means chief. They are the head of a department. So everyone in that department answers to them.

There is hierarchy is just about every level of business. And the more players involved the more hierarchial structure needed. This is necessary due to conflicts of decision, and belief that arise between team members.
>>
The highest level people in a company are assessed on their decision making capability.

Obviously when you are making big decisions you are effectively dealing with chaos - will severing one unproductive division save your company or stifle innovation and make it worse off in the long run?

Imagine the CEO position as the last chair in a giant game of musical chairs. Whoever has weathered the most storms and made the decisions that went down as successful decisions will be the one that gets their ass on that chair.

I tend to find that people who are Chief Execs are highly informed and experienced, can immediately recall detailed and relevant information instantly and are experts at negotiating with people in a way that makes them seem unflappable.

A lot of people think that CEOs talk a load of vacuous nonsense, but actually it's an art that a lot of people aren't good at especially when put under pressure. Tony Blair was a highly skilled politician because when people asked him underhanded questions that were intended to expose a lack of composure or knowledge of his party he could immediately detect the intention of the question and steer the whole conversation around.

It's the difference between being George Bush and Jeb Bush.

And you might wonder why I'm referencing politicians instead of well known CEOs but that's because their decisions and characters are much more public and therefore much more easy to analyse.

>Question: Why is rent-to-own a bad idea?
I've been thinking about moving somewhere rent-to-own, but on the internet all I find is articles about how it is a scam out to fuck you over. What I don't understand is... All I can afford right now (and all my credit will allow) is to rent... so, if I have to pay $1k-1500/month throwing my money away on rent anyway, why not have that money go to a house that I can potentially own one day? Wouldn't I be spending the same $ renting vs a rent-to-own? Even if it falls through, and I never end up owning it.. It's just money that would have been wasted paying rent either way. Why are there warnings? What makes it a scam?

>>1674052
Just make sure to do calculations, it all comes down to the math. I cant tell you whether the price you're paying and the equity you'r getting is good enough or not, the same way I can't tell you what colour your shirt is
>>
>>1674056
So the reason people advise against it is that you'll probably be paying more than the house is worth..? Is that what you're saying?

Because even if that's true... like I said, I'd be spending years wasting money on rent anyway. Might as well end up with a house in several years. It's all money I would need to spend anyway to keep a roof over my head, whether it's going towards rent (in the trash) or rent-to-own (a house that is mine eventually).

What I'm wondering is, do you not always get the house at the end or something? And still...even if that's true... isn't it just like paying rent somewhere, Where you never own the house at the end?
>>
>>1674052
For example, if I were to go into a situation with low expectations, and the mind frame that I will never own the house.. what is the risk? If I just look at is as my new rental, where I will be paying rent... and maybe at the end I get the perk of getting to own the house I've been renting? What can go so horribly wrong that there are all these warnings about it being a scam?

I'm 22, never had a credit card, never taken out a loan. I have no credit score. What does /biz/ recommend a person in my situation start with as far as a credit card to build credit. The card will be strictly used to build credit, I will never spend more than I can pay.

secured card from your favorite bank.
>>
>>1674048
My bank doesn't offer credit cards to people with no credit. I went and talked to them today and they said I would have to take out a "shared" loan and pay 3% of the loan back over 6 months, and then MAYBE I would have enough credit to obtain a credit card with them.
>>
>>1674045
Going to give you legitimate advice because you seem retarded.

Go to your local restaurant once a week and order something cheap. Then pay it with your credit card. Pay it back to the card company. Then do this weekly until the card company trusts you with bigger shit.

I just watched the movie "The Accountant", it's a good movie, but what really intrigued me was the actual accounting part. The main character poured through tonnes of data, and was looking for mistakes, things that didn't fit. Albeit the movie didn't have much accounting in it, it was still incredulous.

I was wondering if Forensic Accounting is a good field to go into for the future? I was going to just study regular Financial Accounting, but this Forensic stuff looks much more interesting, and I like the danger factor involved. Not that it is a dangerous job, but that it could become a dangerous job because you'd have to testify and even visit places, it's very interesting.

Back when me and my friends were in high school we found an easy way to make bank on a yoyo company here in nyc called Yoyonation.

We three stole thousands of dollars worth of product and sold it back to their community as well as other BST's until one of us who was literally the first to start the stealing business left cause he was tired of it.

Then the remaining two of us stole even more and ramped up the thief and our profit until they finally noticed and told us to return the goods.

We couldnt because we obviously sold the shit but we did have tons of other shit that was equal in the 10,000+ value we stole and returned that in exchange for no charges or court action.

We did not snitch on our friend who left before things got bad. He was smart, we wasnt. Remember us having a conversation about snitching on him but we ultimately didnt and he laughed his ass off when he found out we were caught.

In anycase the company shut down cause it couldnt recoup the losses and people lose their jobs cause of us.

We took down a company in high school and got out with our records clean.

You learn accounting by reading accounting books.

t. someone who studied it
>>
It's not hard at all. But you need licenses and certifications to get a job and the tests for these require a degree. What a load of shit, but Murica! We the gobment and we control student loans now so every job requires a degree!

Higher education is just another form of taxes.
>>
>>1673948
I'll rephrase my question. How hard is it to learn accounting without being guided by some kind of senior accountant?
