Who here has published a nonfiction book? I have an idea for a memoir-style immigrant story, but I can't be fucked to write it without knowing it could pay off down the line.
To my understanding, agents and publishers are fine with a proposal in place of an actual piece of work. Proposals, to my understanding, need to prove that there's a market for your work, which mine would.
Is publishing a book realistic though? Or do I need to be some 100,000+ follower SJW or Alt-Right social media fag to get recognition?
Please no /lit/ here.
>>1686934
Do you mean for the purpose of getting a book published or to make money?
If only to get a book published there are sites like blurb.com that do low vol printing of custom work.
If its to make money you would need to prove that youre an accomplished writer and have a portfolio of work - book publishing is a suffocating industry that makes no money - talking cents per sale if you break 'x' thousands of units sold
People usually don't write non fiction in hopes of it paying off like you think. They do it to promote themselves, an idea, or a business.
But anyways, there are many publishing companies you can go to. The just of it is you give them 25k and express your thoughts into speech, then they take that and put it into words and handle the rest
I got a fiction book published. Sold 113 copies on Amazon. Amazon took most of the profits because they hate book publishers.
Is trade school really a meme? im 18 and have absolutely no direction. Im not a piece of shit though. im working at a restraunt right now and i could easily climb the ladder and become gm in no time. seriously not sure if i should go to uni or not.
you can apply to your trade school here: admission is free for the poor boys club.

I come from a family of general white trash blue collar people and could give my own biased opinions.
HVAC and plumbing are decent career paths if you want to start your own business 5-10 years down the road. That's basically what every one does. If you actually find a decent employer and pay attention to how they operate and their work ethic, you could easily make $90-120K a year NET running your own one man crew business like most people here in Texas eventually do.
Electrician is decent. My friend went to an electrician program at a tech school. He also took some classes at a community college for a "career certificate" in machine maintenance. He's been doing maintenance in a factory for almost 6 years now and makes $28/hour. The plant he works at maxes out at $40/hour.
Welding is pretty shit pay unless you chase the money. My Uncle's friend basically travels a lot just to find the jobs making decent pay. Else you will be making $12-14/hour in a shop/factory.
Then there's the basic handy man shit my Uncle does. He does painting, landscaping, flooring, etc. It's taken him over a decade and lots of debt to build up his business though. And there's really no schooling for it. You just have to gain experience through shitty $8-10/hour general labor jobs being somebody's bitch, then taking their customers.
Another blue collar option would be janitorial. Invest in some cleaning equipment. Learn how to properly use a commercial carpet cleaner. Learn how to wax and strip floors. Get a business license and liability insurance. Start cold calling stores and offices, or showing up in person. Maybe make a bullshit website with before and after photos of offices or stores being cleaned. My Father did this briefly for a few years and it's good money but he failed because he will never be fit to run a business. He doesn't know how to use computers or a cell phone very much. He's always rude with people. He refuses to look professional. etc.
Dont go to college if you dont know what you want to do yet. Thats the real meme here.
has anyone here done any consulting in IT? I work full time as a network engineer but have made some good bank doing some consulting type work. one of my first jobs was fixing wireless access at some random hotel. I made a good 500 bucks in a day in cash. Another client I put in network wiring and a rack and cabinet and made about 5k and split it with a friend. I want to continue work like this but I have a real issue targeting clients. I'd rather keep away from desktop and server support and focus on reselling internet access and designing networks. ive also considered trying to sell companies a website or redesign their website in order to get a shoehorn in. The couple clients I've gotten have actually been from Craigslist. I have a website and some social media presence. any advice or thoughts on targeting customers and selling to them?
>>1686907
Owning an IT biz. Interested in working as contractor for me? Literally keep doing the stuff, u did so far and leave finding the clients to me. I'll pay you a commission on the net profit
>>1686907
Already doing it here in ATL. Stay out of my territory or I'll fuck your girl then put you out of business.
/biz/bros I need help with what associates degree I should pursue.
I already have a part time job working in the family business bringing in a nice 55k a year but I want to start a family soon and need a bit of extras money.
What is the best degree with the least amount of hours or that I can work from home in? I'm thinking comp sci.

Biochemistry/BioEngineering
Computer science is a huge meme, don't fall for it.
>>1686915
Is that something I could do from home in my spare time? Why not comp sci or web design?
>>1686919
Web design is an okay side hustle, if you get old people interested in getting a hip website or social media network for their job, but that you can do on your own time tbdesu
It's just more interesting, and something you can definitely use. You can build shit, and tutor people, and write shit, and make money off of stupid kids on the internet who need either homework done, or some tutoring online.
/biz/ tell me what do you want? Then tell me how much thought have you given to what you say you want?
I want some Taco Bell. Thought of posting a Craigslist ad for somebody to bring me Taco Bell because I'm watching football and don't want to leave. There should be like an Uber app but for people to run errands for you.

I want scotch tape and festive seasonal wrapping paper.
I've given it quite a bit of thought.
I'll probably go get some in a little while.

Lets get a business thread. It doesn't matter wether you're making $5 or $5,000,000, you're welcome here. I'll start of course.
>What your business does
I live in NYC, and have people out in SF, London, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Jordan and a few other states in the US, operating a company. I own the company and I started it when I was 20.
Basically, we offer local companies and small businesses (mostly traditional brick and mortar stores), business services such as leafleting, cleaning and accounting.
>How much profit do make
We charge the companies we work for every month, depending on the plan they have chosen. This year, we've netted almost $600k (when you convert the currencies from the middle east and UK), this has been one of our best years yet.
>Tips
Ask me anything, I'll be sure to give tips. I'm all about sharing, I've been offered hefty ammounts of money to mentor people but I choose to do it for free. So AMA :)
I also have a question.
What are your guys' outlooks for 2017 and beyond, whats gonna be the next big thing in your opinion?
ITT:
Give advice to other anons if you feel you can give a piece of your knowledge they could use.
Discuss the possibility of business in 2017 and what the best markets for a startup business are.
Discuss scalability and ultimately, making MORE AND MORE MONEY. After all, that what we do this for, right?

How much should I make a year to have a kid with my wife? We're almost both 30 and need to pop this sucker out soon.
mortgage here in south florida is around $900 and I currently make 60k a year.
That should be plenty right? I have 20 grand saved and I'm paying $850 in rent but will probably put a down payment on a 200k house. Seems like a good plan no?

>>1686562
well let's look it this way
you are poor
a) you can have cheap high-caloric value food with lots of carbs and fats that will satisfy you deeply and decrease your stress levels
b) you can have expensive food you have to also spend time on procuring and preparing and will not be as fulfilling and satisfying as fast food. it's also mostly salads and you are fucking bored out of your mind of salads already.
it might taste better it might be better for your health but is it worth it day to day?

Say you buy 100 shares at $5 ea and the stock tanks overnight and drops down to $0.5 ea. Assuming a new relatively stable price point, does it make sense to buy more at this new price thus reducing your average price per share and the gains required to make a profit?
>>1686528
if you think it will rise then yeah. it might be throwing good money after bad, but it does lessen the recovery needed to breakeven. whether the recovery comes is the gamble.
>>1686528
http://www.investopedia.com/terms/v/valuetrap.asp
Well, it depends on the reason of the drop. If you follow small cap companies extensively, you'll see a lot of purchase opportunities arising. 5% drops, even when there are no news or changes. 5% increases just because of an article in the papers or a press conference.
If you thought it was okay to buy in at $5, and nothing has changed, you should be buying with both hands at $0.5. In that case the fundamentals are the same, but the price is better.
http://www.investopedia.com/terms/f/fundamentals.asp
>>1686528
If it dropped 90%, there's something fundamentally wrong with the companyt/security. It hurts but you should probably sell since it may only drop further. If it goes back to $5/share, it will take a long time (most likely a few years, if ever). You need to take a loss instead of loosing more. Been through this shit multiple times. It sucks but be more careful next time and don't buy shit companies in the hopes of making a lot of money. Small and steady wins the fucking race.
I'm seriously considering buying sub $5k real-estate in Detroit and holding it for the inevitable rebirth of American industry and gentrification of Detroit. Why isn't this a good idea?
>>1686525
>Why isn't this a good idea?
because this will never happen, Detroit will become a ghost town.
