Every undeclared peer I meet, I always suggest they give accounting a try.
It's always the same reaction
*look down and smirk* "no huehue" I just want the good ole days back when accounting was cool and all business majors were equally respected.
What is it about debits and credits that turn so many people away?

People don't like it because most people chose their majors based on trying to get young socialist pussy.

Accounting is a rules based profession. Not everyone is into that.

Speaking from experience, just listen to Mumford & Sons to get SBUX-style socialist pussy

Other bands may apply as well

How would a Bitcoin world handle fraudulent sales? All coins are stored securely via encryption so what's stopping criminals from defrauding people online without consequences since you can't return stolen money? It would make buying stuff online a 50/50 gamble every time. Sounds like we'd be moving 200 years back in consumer protection and into some libertarian nightmare.

A third party would charge additional fees like VISA or a bank. The whole point of Bitcoin is avoid a third party. We would return to where we are now.

ITT: we share our watches

This is one of my first semi designer watches, it's by the Bulova Corporation, except it's under their company Caravelle New York.

I like the understated look of it, and it catches light really subtley.

My favorite watch in my collection is a Citizen eco drive with a sapphire crystal and atomic time. $500 new but could be had on eBay for half that.

You won't find a better watch unless you need the prestige of a mid-high tier Swiss auto.

So long story short my mother got into this horseshit MLM scheme that involved selling some Tang flavored placebos and has lost roughly $1.5k in cash. She quit her job and is trying to bullshit her way on $550 Social Security checks a month.

She has $65k in various CDs that I just learned about and wants to empty them immediately to double down on the Super Fruit Rollups that the MLM wants her to hock.

Is there anyway I can help her manage the money into an account that could offer her slightly higher than average returns on investments

I do invest in those. Not 100% because I'm not 65. Only 10% of my portfolio goes to what you mentioned (minus the "get rich quick" schemes)
>>
>>1708216
If you were 65 you'd have most of your money in bonds. If an 08 happened poof there goes your retirement. But now your old and there isn't time to recover.
>>
>>1708224
At retirement, you want 50-100% stocks because long-term growth is still very important. Stocks accomplish this best.

>If an 08 happened poof there goes your retirement

It is true that sequence of return risk is very important over the first few years of retirement. In 2008, the S&P500 fell 37%. But let's look at the years following:

2009: +26.46%
2010: +15.06%
2011: +2.11%
2012: +16.00%
2013: +32.39%
2014: +13.69%
2015: +1.40%
2016: +11.24%

That said we are due for a recession in a year or two...

I am a NEET with 27k in my personal bank account. I want to move out and rent a small 1 bed 1 bath apartment. I live in Florida, so rent isn't that high. How long could I be able to survive of this? And what could I keep doing to make more money?

>How long could I be able to survive of this?

M = S / L

S = Present Savings

L = Cost of living expenses on average per month

M = Months you can survive off this

>And what could I keep doing to make more money?

You could work a job or exchange your services for money to someone willing to purchase them. Alternatively you can sell some of your possessions.
>>
Whats the incentive to stay in the US? 27k would last you about 7 years in Sihoukinville and its much nicer

In all artforms? I'd record some music, and upload it to soundcloud, youtube, etc. I'd make paintings of all different styles (classical, postmodern, etc.) and sell them on my website. I'd make autistic furry porn for Deviant Art, and set high prices for requests. With each thing that I'd create, I'd shill endlessly on 4chan, reddit, twitter, youtube, etc.
I'd also set up a patreon, and use a female name in order to make bank.

So I'm not sure how often you get threads like mine but I am brand new to the stocks and trading market. I just opened an account and put 1000 dollars into it, so I can start some type of retirement or future investments. I honestly have no clue what I'm doing and the only people that I can talk to about this are my mom and her boyfriend--both of which get drunk and fall asleep watching business news most of the time, so I'm not quite sure how trustworthy they are. They haven't lost a ton of money in the market, but they always lose me when talking about stocks.

I did buy some stock in facebook based on what they told me. They are also facebook stock holders. I still have about 500 bucks left and I basically have no clue what I'm doing. I don't know how to look for stocks, I thought I should start buying penny stocks because people say that's how you become rich but apparently that doesn't work. All the other stocks tend to be really expensive. Can anyone help out?

>people say that's how you become rich
Lol. People on /biz/, maybe.
>>
>>1707863
I've only started coming to /biz/
but from what I gather about stocks and trading is a lot of people invest in penny stocks in hopes that they'll jump in price and then you can sell. But I guess you have to be lucky.

Where do I start? How do I find stocks that I like?
>>
>>1707837
May I ask who your broker is? They most likely have people you can talk to as well as free reporting on different stocks.

I'm assuming you opened up a regular brokerage account and not an IRA retirement account (which is fine). If you're not sure what to start with a broad-market ETF that tracks the S&P 500 index is a good start. The key to creating wealth is to save a bit every month, even if it's only $20. Something is better than nothing.

I work with quants.
Most of them are PhD in Maths, Physics or Computer Science.

What do they do? They build financial models in Python, C++ or C#.

Do I need to go to an ivy league school or could I get my PhD from a public school? If I have two undergrads would a masters do? Is it realistic to anticipate high six figures from this job? I like the job description and would probably do it for much less, but knowing how much you're worth seems to be more important than people give it credit.
>>
>>1707759
Ivy leage PhD is a bread and butter way. Studying at Ivy will give you a lot of contacts and many companies hire there on campus.

However PhD from a public school is very good too. I'd say that the most important thing is how you manage during your interviews.

Ivy leagues give you some edge mostly because you will be referred by someone and you will know where are you applying. However if you network properly, ace your interview and you will have some nice portfolio of achievements you will land it for sure.
If you have some projects on github - show them. If you did a scientific paper - share it with them. Gain the experience now. Register at quantopian and start tinkering. Master NumPy. Find your niche. Maybe algo trading, maybe derivatives modeling. Read the books, model it on your own, gain experience.
I'm sure everyone will take someone with experience over ivy freshmen.

If you're applying to some smaller boutique firm you can also apply for other roles (like junior software developer, junior risk manager or even trading support guy), make friends with quants and switch roler. Also in boutique you need to be more jack-of-all-trades kind of guy.

Cash depends on your experience. Pretty much the more complex instruments/strategies you model - the more you should get paid.

All right /biz, we get posters all the time asking us how to make money online. Lets set the bar as low as it gets.

How can someone make at least a single dollar online in a day? With no previous assets or skills.

Rules:
>Money has to be liquidable (so earning $5 with a $10 cashout limit doesnt count)
>Learning/Experience has to fit within the day limit
>Online only, nothing physical required more than basic internet access
>Has to be free. No pay-to-play

Im stumped so far. Surveys take more than a day to hit the cashout limit. Freelancing takes more than a days worth of learning. Affiliate marketing seems like the best bet but youd have to get lucky.
