Classic rookie mistake to avoid.

Don't try and snatch the pistol from the security guard's holster as a joke. It isn't that funny and you could get in trouble. Learned this the hard way.

is algo trading a meme? ive tried to get into it but it looks hard as shit for a non-programmer. has anyone on this website actually made good money from algo trading, or is it only good in theory. HFT doesn't count, cause that shit is a good 2 steps above normal algo trading.

Don't worry about the programming part, the hardest part if programming is coming up with an idea of what to do. The rest is building little chunks into bigger chunks, then trying to figure out why its not working. Then fixing it.

Interactive Brokers has numerous algos bult into their trading platform, worth a look. Their website explains all of them. Keep in mind that many of them are designed for institutions not individuals.

you can't become an algo trader without being a programmer. period. full stop.

Is translation a worthwhile career?

>Be me, 23 male
>Be half white, half pajeet
>Speak both white and pajeetinese fluently
>Dad is a former translator that took on military contracts for 'murrica.
>Military hits him up again a week ago
>Offering 120k+ to go translate as a tier 1 for the marines in pajeetistan

Basically, he wants me to go in his place to rake in enough money to pay for the rest of my schooling and loans.
As a native born US citizen I'll be able to get higher security clearance and make even better pay than he will.

On the upside:
- If I manage to get tier 2 or tier 3 clearance I could potentially be making 250k annually
- One year of work will pay off school + loans and let me have money left over to either start a business or invest.
- Serve my country (if that means something to you)

On the downside:
- Get shot at on a daily basis
- Military culture
- IEDs
- Potential death or permanent disabilities from combat
- Preservatives in the MREs essentially mean you will never poop again.
- No job security, only annual contracts where they can drop you at any time.

Is it worth the risk/trouble to go?
What would /biz/ do in my situation?

Hi /biz/

I'm currently a freshman in college with about $2500 in the bank. My parents are paying for my tuition and over the summer I will live with them and work a job. I have 0 overhead so saving is easy for me at this point, but I also don't want my money to sit there as I slowly chip away at it when I'm not working. I have decided to invest my money, primarily in the Wilshire 5000 while also dabbling in individual companies aswell. This is primarily an exercise in starting to self-educate myself on how to properly trade and invest for the future when I hope to have a lot more money to work with. I am majoring in Environmental Science, but I intend on double majoring with either Economics or Entrepreneurship in-case you're wondering. My father is a business owner and he

Does this seem like a sound plan? I have little risk currently as I am fully supported by my family, and it seems like a good time to start learning. However I have seen grumblings of us being ontop of a bubble, and with a new president coming into office aswell I know it is a volatile time. Should I just save and wait, or do I start this process and get my feet wet?

Looks like my sentence got cut off. I was going to say my father is a business owner and he always preached to me how important it is to strive for self-employment, and teaching myself about investing seems like a good place to start.

No one wants Bitcoin

No one wants BItcoin in a glass bottle (ETH)

They want tangible assets

Cause when the ship goes down to the depths of the sea it will all be forgotten.

Ever wonder how people still dive down to rekt ships to find gold from hundreds of years ago?

No one will ever do that for fiat EVER.
>>
>>1718647
The tangible value is in the computing power it takes to mine, computers cost real money to make. Inflation will work alongside Moore's law. It is the currency of the future, son. Even countries eventually collapse and their currencies become worth fuck all. The internet will be the next place of rich "elements" much like silver and gold (cryptos) as we step into a new era right edging closer towards a technological singularity.

Why do people even advertise? When I look at advertisements whether it be from the Internet, a billboard, TV, etc my mind filters it out and I pay no attention to it. Do most people even pay attention to it?

>>
>>1718617
because it does influence you subconciously. even if you don't buy the product you're being trained that
>buying stuff is good
>>
>>1718617
I've always understood it as

"You're not the center of the universe, faggot"

Because if you think about it, advertisement works to some degree. Just because you aren't affected by it, you're implying why would anyone be affected. Yet you see people buy the on seen on tv stuff, the Jordan 5lave XIII's being announced and people rage that they need it,

Just because you dont enjoy it or even care, is because you're not the target audience. People have seen stuff like Jackass, back in its day, and went out and copied it; yet, you're not the one who got influenced.

Advertisement works in certain areas, specific target groups and situations. Think outside of you being relevant to the materials shown and you'll understand more.

oh, another example. Penis enlargement or dietary pills. You wouldn't use them, but i bet you someone somewhere is buying them.

That's better than no profit. Once you have a business market tapping is easier than starting from nothing.

Any oldfags here make a low salary relative to their age?

I'm 32, about to turn 33 in a couple of months and I make 60K a year as an accountant. I know it's not the worst salary in the world, but I feel like I should be doing a lot better at this point in my life.

Seeing all the Chads my age or younger drive around with their pretty blonde girlfriends in BMW X5's really gets me down. I don't know...

Hello smart people of /biz/. Why the fuck can't I win money from online poker? Are any of you successful players who sucked at the beginning and had to deal with people calling you a degenerate gambler? Please tell me your fucking stories. Which jobs are least likely to be outsourced or automated?

Which are most likely?

This is actually an interesting question.

I work in financial services and there are certain parts that are staying and certain parts that are going. Algorithmic trading has been a big deal now for awhile. Robotic financial advisors are also starting to become a thing.

My instinct is to say sales. Computers are really good at performing repetitive tasks with very set rules. They're a lot less good with gray areas. Computers might be really good at identifying who is likely to buy things based on demographic information, but a human would always be better at making the pitch.
>>
>>1718376
Will economics remain relevant?

>>1718405
With the advent of robotic advisors, is there still a chance of getting a job as a currency trader in the future?
>>
>>1718406

Responding to both parts of your question:

1) My guess on this one would be yes. You want to be a part of the knowledge economy.

2) Robotic advisors was a reference to financial advisors. Theres a lot of regulation in that industry because of the new Depart of Labor fiduciary rule, and its become cheaper for companies to have small clients use a robo advisor than a real person.

This is different from currency trading, which is an industry in decline. Theres been a lot of headlines in recent months about the big banks cutting head counts and bonus pools at FICC desks. It's not like it used to be, for sure. It's a very regulated industry now.

What are some good online sources or youtube channels that talk about investing and finance?
23 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
Read a book.
>>
Even better than reading a book is following real markets.

Get a subscription to WSJ, Barrons, the Financial Times, and whatever other thing you can. If you don't want to pay, just go through Bloomberg and CNBC every day and read the important stories. Familiarizing yourself with markets takes many months.

> good online sources
> youtube channels
For someone who advocates reading so much you sure arent very good at it. Thanks for not recommending any books anyway though.
