Underwriter here. It's been a long time since I've looked at macroeconomics but can you guys give me a run down of the proposed tariffs on Mexico?
From what I remember, they just increase the cost of goods for domestic consumers as the now taxed importer will pass costs to consumers and it also hurts consumers because domestic companies are under less pressure to lower prices due to the artificially higher prices charged by the now taxed importers.
Plus the country that got slapped with tariffs isn't going to sit there and take it, and slaps back with tariffs of their own further hurting domestic companies. Seems like this whole Mexico shitshow is lose-lose for everyone involved. Also, any Texans here? With so much of your economy and millions of jobs relying on trade with Mexico, what do you think about Trump's tariffs?
>>1760611
My bad. I searched the catalog for "tariff" and didn't get a hit.
Texan here, Trump's a fucking idiot in general. Your analysis Is basically correct. A tariff is a protectionist policy to make a country's own goods more attractive by inflating the price of foreign goods. If they're trying to "make Mexico pay" for the wall, this isn't how you do it.
As I understand it though, they're backing off because anyone who took basic macro Econ knows exactly what type of bullshit it is.
Someone in the dropshipping thread asked me to make a thread about my future potential worm farm, so I guess I will.
I want to farm worms, right? I want to help the environment, have low start-up costs, low overhead, low maintenance, etc. I have $50 to my name, pretty much. With that, I can get one thousand worms and the materials I'll need to build a decent housing for the worms. I figured I'd make it out of wood so I can control the dimensions/depth/etc.
Feeding the worms is extremely easy. They like newspaper, egg shells, leaves, and things of that nature. They are composters and I have a shit-ton of leaves because I live next to the woods. I basically have free food from doing yardwork. Of course, they'll also be eating some kitchen scraps. It's helping the environment by not sending this stuff to a landfill. In a few weeks or months depending on the amount of worms, I'll have nice soil with worm castings.
>>1760549
Worm castings will be the money-maker. It's their shit. With that shit you can grow bigger vegetables or plants. You sell that at a respectable price for so much per pound and you walk away a richer man than you were. I, personally, will be trying to stay local and hit up the farmer's markets. From what I've seen, there isn't anything for it here. I could be wrong, but I haven't seen it as I said. I've also looked it up online and there's nothing in my area for it on places like Craigslist. So, local stuff will help the environment too with less fuel and emissions going towards transporting it across the country.
The worms multiply, so I will get more worms. This will require more space to house them and more food, but I will worry about that when it happens. I can also sell the worms for fish bait if I want, but I don't really plan on that. The worm castings can be boiled for "tea" as well, which will help growth of plants and can be easily sprayed. I plan on selling that in a spray bottle for ease of use for anyone that'll purchase it. I also plan on selling little bags for the little potted plants people keep in their homes.
I'm really bad at marketing or selling myself so I just plan to do what I can in order to sell it. I can't really "gussy up" worm shit. I just want to sell a product to people that will help them.
so this is what it's come to - selling worm shit.

Yeah.
So /biz/, 2016 has passed and by now all the numbers should be coming in. How much did you make last year? Salaries, profits, you name it.
>Gross Income
>Taxes
>Expenses
>New net worth
>Debt
>salary
>$85,000
>$66,000 after taxes and insurance
>bonus
>$15,000
>it's immediately taxed at 25% when they deposit it for net of $11,250
>$8,500 in 401k matching
>total take home pay including money saved in 401k:
>$93,250
>no mortgage, car paid off, like $2k in credit card debt
>saved up $50k this year
And now I need to spend $40k of that rennovating the house: new flooring, painting inside and out, replace the A/C, new roof, and remodel the kitchen and bathroom. Fucking real life sucks ass. I almost said fuck it and bought a new house but that would just be more expensive in the long run.
>>1760589
Rent?
>>1760595
I own a home. My parents bought it; dad died, moved my mom to an apartment I pay for (she doesn't speak English and works as a housekeeper). I took over the house with $75k left on the mortgage. I made lots of extra payments on the mortgage over the last 4 years and literally just got debt free by paying off most of my credit card and my car off.
Over working for the last 6 years I only have $70k saved ($50k from 2016 alone) due to focusing on paying off debt; now fucking home renovations are going to eat my ass. Hopefully there's no big expenses for me this year.
Where do I get info about cryptocurrencies from?
My aim is to get info on bubbles, pump&dumps, etc. Probably long-term "investment" as well.
Do your own research dumbass
you listen to biz and get in late on the latest pump
have lots of btc
buy up lots of a cheap coin that is 1 satoshi (0.00000001 btc)
wait for others to buy as well, then pump or dump.
look at coinmarketcap for some cheap currencies
nothing is ever really long term and you would be lucky to find such, all alt coins are flavor of the month
Today I found out there is no way I'm getting into my country's ivy league school, so I'll most likely be a poor wagecuck for life. Should I just kill myself?

yes
With that attitude, yes you should.

How do I ensure that this will last me a while? I don't have a huge family so there's not much to 'give'. I don't have any type of debt or insane bills to pay. I also live frugally so I'm not going to be spending anything crazy. The only large purchases I'd make with this would be a car and dental work.

Redpill me on Depreciation, /biz/. Is it just an accountants' trick to avoid tax?
The costs of asset depreciation aren't actually a real-life 'cost', the money is still in the bank. So if a company's balance sheet shows a lot of depreciation, does that mean it has higher profits than it admits to?
You have it backwards.
You have 100 bucks in the bank.
You pay 100 bucks to buy an asset.
Now you have 0 bucks and an asset.
But even though you just spent your 100 bucks, the IRS doesn't accept it as a business expense. Instead they force you to write off 20 bucks for the next 5 years.
So even though in the first year they pay 100 bucks, they can only avoid tax on 20. And money in the past is always more valuable than money in the present. So depreciation is a really bad deal for businesses compared to having the full price count as a business expense immediately. It's something tax laws force businesses to do, because it benefits the state.
In the first year your profit on paper is way higher than it actually is, and yes, in later years your profit on paper is lower than it actually is. This is not a good thing for the business though. You want to write off shit as soon as possible.
w-w-whaat?
Well I am gonna take bait, there's more to assets than cash.
You know how your computer doesn't work as well as when you bought it? That's depreciation.
Real estate, cars, machinery, etc. gets old and becomes less useful for its intended purpose.
It would make no sense declaring that you have a 80k car in your estate when you and everyone else knows that it's a 20 year old piece of shit that you couldn't sell anywhere near that price.
Deducting asset depreciation is no trick, it's something tax law allows to show the real cost of producing goods and services across time.

I'm looking for a 2nd credit card and wondering what I should get. Is the amazon prime card worth it?

Cash back mostly, I don't see flying regularly in my future.
I'm just wondering if there is any obscure card out there that doesn't show up on Google searches. Everything seems to max out at 5% cashback.
Is there any other rewards besides flights and cashback? Can I get monthly hookers? Free software?
