What is stopping me from buying a bunch of physical gold, melting it down and insterting a bunch of lead or some other heavy but cheap metal inside of it, then moulding it back into its original shape.

I feel like there is huge profit to be made here.

why do you think gold bars have markings on it? do you really think anyone beside some really dumb shitheads would buy the gold from you?
>>
>>1770827
So i cut the top off that has the engraving, then smelt it all back together
Im sure I could find idiots to buy the non engraved gold anyway
>>
>>1770823
The specific density of gold.
Given weight and volume you can calculate the density of a bar and compare it to the density of gold. The fucking Ancient Greeks knew how to spot fake gold bars, ffs.

You would need to use tungsten, the only other material with a specific density very close to gold. And yes, this already happens. They make fake bars in China with rods of tungsten inside.

And yes, this is where reputable manufacturers with markings, certificates, holograms, etc come in (>>1770827).

>I feel like there is huge profit to be made here.
Calling it "profit" makes it seem like a legitimate business. It's still fraud and if they ever trace it back to you, you'll be spending a decade in prison and then the rest of your life repaying your victims.

If you're willing to take this risk - sure, go for it!

Sup /biz/,

I need help, I'm having a very hard time deciding on whether I should accept this job offer or not as I can see both benefits and negatives in taking it.

I'm 29 years old and for the last 9 years I have been an industrial painter. I went though an apprenticeship and am currently a journeyman. In the last 8 years I have landed jobs on military bases and through the process of this, I have obtained a very high military clearance. This clearance has allowed me to apply for jobs that normally I would have no right in applying for due to the rarity of my clearance. Here's where it gets interesting.

I applied for a remote monitoring job that requires the use of IBM Maximo and other programs to monitor, create orders, and assign work to supervisors. Basically a low level admin job. I would take it without a second thought but I have another job offer as a painter that also requires specialized training/certifications that I have picked up throughout the years. The admin job is a salary of $80k a year while while the painting job is on average $42/hr (government contract/DB) or just around $90k a year.

I would be trained in the use of IBM Maximo and other programs and the painting job is familiar and relatively easy as far as painting goes. Leave is about the same for both jobs BUT the admin job is most likely shorter term (3 year job or so) while the painting job could be until I grow old and physically can't do it any more and have to retire.

Should I take the hit of $10-20k/yr (counting overtime) for a desk job and admin experience on my resume? Is Maximo and admin experience of this type worth anything after I have to find a new job in 3 years? Most of my retirement is invested in property, I own 2 houses - one of which I rent out and about 3 acres of some lakefront property that I currently use for a camp ground but plan on building on eventually.

I know this is a personal preference question but I have offers and I can't decide. What would you do?
12 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Stick to painting, admin is boring as shit anyway, even if it sounds comfy now, you'll have no job satisfaction.

And besides at 29 on a large hourly rate you could essentially earn as much as you want if you smash out overtime hours. Stick with what you know and what you're good at until you can't/don't have to do it any more.
>>
>>1770716

Satisfaction is something that I'm worried about for sure. I do enjoy those hard days when I finish and come home tired. At the same time, this might sound silly, but I have never really had the opportunity for higher education and there is definitely a 'grass is greener on the other side' mentality that makes me want to try a job this admin job. Salary does scare me a bit though.
>>
>>1770724

Grass is always greener mentality is a bad one to have, remember a job isn't the end it's just a means to an end. Stick to painting and earn more moolah while you're at it

I don't get fucking taxes.

I owe like $4,500 this year. I file jointly with my wife, we made 60k total the tax year before last, with $3,800 withheld, and owed $786.

This tax year we made 75k total, with $7,100 withheld. WHY THE FUCK DO WE OWE $4500?

by two 100K rental properties and keep 100K cash for emergencies in general in your personal life as well as repairs on the rentals. hire a good property manager to deal with all the bullshit so you're very minimally involved. put each property in a separate LLC you form. it may take a few months or even a whole year but at some point you should start making 15 to 25% Roi on your Investments. over the years they will pay themselves off while generating a little extra that's passive for you. eventually you will on both outright and collect rent on them forever thereby turning your 200k into much much more down the line. eventually you could add more properties once you know what you're doing and you can pass all this shit down to your kids one day to thereby giving them a giant safety net.

I'm using talk to text so excuse the fucked up formatting.

also take like $10,000 and treat yourself

I'm 22, living with family, didn't go to college, and don't have a bank account. This year I've decided to change myself and try my hand at making some money (even if it's a small amount, so I can lessen the load I place on the family.) I have around $1200 saved up from doing small favors for friends and neighbors and decided to jump on this dropshipping thing I've read about on here. Problem is, I don't know a thing about it other than the fact that you basically act as the middleman as supposed to being the actual seller of the product. I'm aware of the fact that I need to set-up a site, find the products I wanna advertise, and getting myself a bank account, but the other stuff terrify and confuse me. What exactly is an LLC? Do I name my LLC after the website I'm planning to make? Do I have to register a separate bank account with the LLC? Do I have to sign up for a LLC everytime I want to make a new website to sell products? What are taxes, and how do I pay them off?

Who here with student loans considering just fighting it and never paying? Anyone think the system will change to help those strapped with massive student loans?

I have $50k in student loan debt. God how I wish I could go back and not go to college. Before I get a flood of "you fucked up" I'm well aware I fucked up. And I desperately wish I could take that fuckup back, but I can't now. I have the degree, it's worthless, and there is no way to give it back.

I never wanna pay this shit, but it's gonna lead to debt collections and maybe even a lawsuit.

I plan on fighting it, and kinda hope others do too, because the more people that fight it, the more incentive the government will have to play ball.

I think the thing that makes me most angry is that they will not settle. So if you owe $50k and you call em up and say "I'll give you a check tomorrow for $40k" they will say no. How ridiculous is that?

I think a lot of us got fucked by the "everyone go to college!" culture and it goes beyond even poor degree choices.

>>
No one held a gun to your head and told you to get a degree, even if it means incurring massive debt, OP.
You can't take back your adult decisions and now you have to pay what you owe.
Why should they settle when you agreed to pay that amount? Fuck right off, in western civilization you are held to your word.
It is entirely up to the creditor to negotiate or not.

Was luck the most significant factor to most people who became rich?

if you consider luck being born rich, yes.

if you consider luck being born in a first world country, yes.

if you consider get a product/service stuck long enough to turn a profit, yes.

if you were born poor, if you were born in a third world shithole, your chances are nought.

if you create something worth buying/using, you need luck to keep your users. but it is likely some chink will produce your design and beat you manufacturing it (see the autism block that was on the news yesterday, or the selfie stick case).
if you design a service or some game for example, you will have clones by the millions if it gets any attention, and it is likely a clone will rob your success (see candycrush)

buy lottery tickets. you have as much chance in getting rich if you are poor.

Good post

Has the work / leisure dichotomy been well and truly destroyed?

You can go home and relax by reading books... oh wait, now you enter a world of all sorts of hierarchies. "Oh you only read X books a day?" "You haven't read that book?" "You don't have the same interpretation of that book as the popular one?" "You didn't even bother having an interpretation?"

Similarly for everything else. You have a social life and every interaction is people judging you on the alpha-beta-gamma scale. And social media is online marketing
