I've been very interested in stocks ever since I was a young kid. For all that interest however, I've never actually bought/sold/traded a stock in my entire life. I just set up an online account (TD Ameritrade), but I have no idea what I'm doing. I'm not necessarily looking for investment advice, as much as information on how this works. I have a few stocks in mind that I think I'd like to buy, but I don't know how it works. I recall seeing there is a $9.99 commission, for buying a stock(please correct me if I'm wrong). What exactly does this mean? Do I have to pay $9.99 for each share I buy, or every time I buy shares in any quantity, or is it something else?

If I wanted to buy 50 shares of a company's stock, do I have to pay $9.99 for each share or just $9.99 total for the whole transaction? What about if I'm buying shares of several different companies at a time? Also what impact will all of this have on my taxes? It's my understanding that capital gains tax is only paid after a stock is sold, but are there any other taxes I need to be aware of? Also if I sell a stock and need to pay capital gains, does this happen automatically like a sales tax, or do I need to keep records, and pay it when I get my taxes done? As you can probably tell I'm thoroughly inexperienced and ignorant.

I save about $100-$150/ month and that has always just gone into a savings account. I'd like to start investing in stocks, buying stock every time I get paid, but depending on how this $9.99 commission works, maybe I'm best off saving the money and buying a lot of stock all at once, a couple times/year. If anybody has any advice they'd be willing to share with an investing virgin I would really appreciate it. I'm kind of excited to get started but at the same time feel like I may have jumped into this too quickly; I probably should have had the answers to my questions prior to opening an account.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

The $9.99 is for each time you buy no matter the quantity, some do deal per share though.

I see; thank you. Does it make sense to buy stock less frequently, but in larger quantities to minimize fees paid?

What would be an approachable way to make cash online?

Nothing really significant, just looking to see if I can.

Some really cool dude suggested making a niche website, which I will, but that doesn't really seem "approachable" unless you commit.

Alright, /biz/. HS student here. I'm fed up with being a politician's playtoy and being subject to these bullshit politicized schools, strikes, and policies. I was born to be exceptional, not stagnant. I'm going to Schulich school of business after high school at York University, where I can get my tuition costs completely waived; my dad teaches ASL there.

I'd like a money-making endeavour to kill time and get experience with before I move on to the bigger things; does anybody know any virgin markets that I could dabble in and start a business?
I'm thinking interpreting American Sign Language for corporations, video producers, and anyone else, to proliferate their online presence. Any tips on how to get inside the corporate sector and get them to hire me?

Hello /biz/, first time poster here.
I know a guy at my uni who invests in something similar to the stock market, except that instead of buying shares he buys foreign currencies to sell them back at profit. Basically he told me that you could make profit just by analyzing curves... He made it sound like it's pretty much an exact science, and apparently he does make money.
Anybody here has some experience with that? I have zero knowledge about the stock market and that kind of things.

>>
>>1820576
Foreign Exchange markets. He's almost certainly full of shit; it's almost impossible for retail (individual) traders to make money in Forex markets, let alone someone with as little capital as a college student.

Alternatively, he's gotten lucky a few times with highly leveraged trades (basically you amplify both your profits and losses by borrowing other people's money) but is soon going to take the wrong side of a trade and get wiped out (lose his entire balance because he overaggressively amplified his profits/losses through leverage)
>>
>>1820576
It's called triangle-arbitrage and hasn't been profitable since the early 2000s due to high-frequency trading. The "guy at your uni" just learned about the concept in lecture and thinks it still holds up in current market conditions. Ask him for his exact trade history for a few trades and you'll quickly see how fabricated his claims are.

Which of the following qualities is better? Being flexible/goal oriented.

I have this question in my application, but I'm not quite sure what to choose. Both are good in a way and I did pretty well with other questions in the application, but this one just got me.

Flexible. Adapting is the key to survival.

System oriented is better than either.

Get a tall random ugly girl, get her to visit a surgeon to fix her face, then get her to go to the gym if she's too skinny or fat.
Don't forget to dye her hair blonde while she's sleeping.

Now you have an attractive leggy blonde for only the price of the surgery, the hair dye and the gym membership.

Read The Two Income Trap by Elizabeth Warren.

Now read it again, but as a racist.

Next, compare life in the pre-capitalist 1700s to the post-capitalist 1800s.

Then compare life in the communist societies of today (say, Cuba) with the capitalist societies of today (say, Singapore).

That should just about cover everything.
>>
>>1820449
It could be worse. You could live in Venezuela or North Korea where both parents need to work a 5 to 9 7 days a week for a piece of bread

Also we aren't living in a capitalist society anymore. If you live in Europe your nation has been usurped by socialism and if you live in the US your country has been usurped by half assed socialism and foreign lobbyists
>>
>>1820449
The problem is you are trying to live like you're in an era that's long gone.

Remain single, avoid having children and life is perfectly affordable.

I don't see how this is relevant in you getting back your tax refund.

As long as all the information you put down is legit and accurate, you shouldn't have any problems getting back your refund check.
