What's the best way to bet against the market?
21 posts and 4 images submitted.

You have to define a few things first.

-How much money are you working with?
-How much are you willing to lose?
-What market? The S&P 500? All equities? July corn futures?
-Do you expect the market to crash today? Next month? This decade?
-How badly do you expect it to crash?

Because for shits and giggles you could pay like $50 in commissions and another $1000 to get 20,000 SPX puts at 1900 for the 22nd.

Then if the S&P 500 drops 500 points in two days, from 2,378 to 1,878, your 20,000 puts are suddenly worth a total of about $440,000.

In which case, I hope you did that trade in a tax advantaged account.
>>
>>1877028
>then if the S&P drops 500 points in two days

And when was the last time the S&P dropped 5% in 48 hours? The market has chopped sideways in a boring manner for so fucking long that their would be riots in the streets if an index dropped anything more than 250 basis points in a single trading session.
>>
>>1877058
21% drop lol

Point is, if OP thinks there's going to be a Black Monday tomorrow (plus change), he could do that. Just giving a stupid answer to a stupid question.

This was the world's 3rd largest reserve currency falling in value by 8% in a few minutes, during the counting of votes for the EU referendum.

When is the next time we will have a financial event of such magnitudes again?

What makes you like that?

I have another $3500 in a Vanguard financials ETF (VFH) for my taxable account, I like risk, and I'm 25 so I won't retire until maybe 40 years from now.

My philosophy is that you can pick and choose stocks or sectors or markets, but unless something jumps out, the marginal extra return isn't worth as much as earning & saving more: >>1876549

I live in Europe so any american activity with cryptocoins happens only at around 8 PM till 6AM for me.

What are my pros and cons here, /biz/?

i don't get your problem

pivx and other cryptos are very active all day and there is an european community on /biz/
>>
>>1876739
I have the same problem.
Some cryptos that I know can blow up any time of the day, I want to be able to set up an alarm that would wake me up.
For example Milo pumped while I was sleeping last night - not that I had any but I very well could have.

Now I found an app called Blockfolio and you can set up alerts it works great but it's just a shitty regular notification alert. I want something that can wake me up.

Any advice?
>>
>>1876823
Pair it with a software alarm clock on your phone.

Hi /biz/
I would like to move out of my basement and start life on my own. I just got a job as a waiter because I'm only 19 and I won't be able to get a better job than that.
I'm planning on renting a room because it's cheaper and I don't have a gf so I don't need privacy.
Also I would like to college at the beginning of the semester.
So here I'm concerned because trying to manage school and work is hard but I still want to be on my own and finish my education. I'm in the UK but I don't think that I would get any social benefits because I just immigrated from Eastern Europe. So I would like to know how to manage work and school to keep my head above the water and any basic information about home finance.

Don't have any UK specific background, but some good principles:

1. Think about why you're going to college. What's your gameplan? What major do you want? What job will that allow you to do?

2. Work during college is important, but don't let it weaken your post-college plan. Need higher grades/more study time to get into a graduate school? Need to take an unpaid internship to get industry experience? Those long term considerations should take priority.

3. Reduce expenses, because whatever you can't earn from work, you'll have to borrow. You're on the right track with renting a room. Consider pooling with roommates/coworkers, renting or buying a house together. Consider areas with a bit longer commute if they're cheaper to live in. See if there are any discounts for eating at work, since that'll help your food budget. Put together a spreadsheet of income and expenses: rent, food, your typical waiting income, possible student loans, and everything else.

4. As an Eastern European immigrant, yeah, the UK will probably be stingy with welfare. Still, take advantage of any things you can. That incldues both welfare and tax credits. Better you get welfarebux than Abdul.

1. My plan is to use college as a ladder to get to a university. College is basically essential for me because I wasn't able to finish the school year and pass my finals because of the fact that I had to move to Scotland with my father. In my class we had 3 "advanced" classes: math, physics and English everything on a much higher level than other profiles.

2. I'm thinking about something with physics. I liked the subject and I'm fairly good at it. So interships and good grades are a must.

3. I won't have problems with food. My one of my sisters thought me how to buy good quality food cheap and my other sister knows how to cook high protein and healthy food. Also I don't think that you have to pay for college in the UK if you're studying full time. Still the spreadsheet idea is great.

4. Maybe I could get some help from the government. I'm from a poor family, my mother died because of alcoholism and my father had to rise me. So I had some support from the the government till the end of my education there.

Thanks anon

When BTC went down many moved to ETH.
This happened because of china's beat down on chinese exchanges and because of bitcoins internal instabilities and politics.
If bitcoin is split its possible ETH will become even biger and BTC holders will move to ETH.

Whats wrong with this idea? Someone shit on me please before I pull the trigger

Why not just buy an ASIC like the S9 which produces 12.5TH/s, and mine shitty SHA256 alt coins like DEM, ZET, XJO, etc, then sit on them for a while until the price at least double or triples (which isnt too hard for coins like these to do) and cash the fuck out. I understanding its somewhat gambling just like regular investing because the coin might not go anywhere, but still these seems much more profitable than just throwing money at coins. Am I wrong?
10 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
It's better to just buy the coins outright and wait.
>>
>>1876514
A lot of the more valuable coins don't use SHA256, and I can only imagine newer currencies that want to protect their distribution will continue to use newer algos or create their own to prevent BTC miners (who will be out of a job after the hard fork) from using their million dollar farms to snap up 100% of a currency.
>>
>>1876543
I just did some quick math and you buy 10 S9s for 13K usd, you can produce 70$/day in PPC
Itll take around half a year to get your 13K back and from then on its all profit. Seems easy enough and more lucrative than investing in shitty coins and hoping they go up

I dont know shit about finances so I figured you guys could help me out. Basically I get about $200 every month from "Deposit Canada" and I'm not sure why or what this is for. I dont have a job and I dont get neetbux (basically yes I'm a leech) so I'm suspicious about this money. I've spent some of this money and I just realized that this money comes in as credit. Does anybody know what the rules of spending this money is? Do I have to pay this money back? I highly doubt I'm just getting free money. I wanted to ask here before I went to the bank because I'm a shut in loser. Thanks in advance

Those suggest the Canadian government is giving you a couple hundred every month. Any idea why?

Tax refund? Autismbux from a form you filled out, not knowing it'd be neetbux? Student loans?

You probably don't have to pay it back unless you're inadvertently committing tax or benefits fraud.
>>
>>1876515
No neetbux and I've never held down a job for more than a month so I've never filled out taxes.
If I dont pay this money back im facing a fraud charge?
>>
>>1876515

Also forgot to note that I haven't taken out any student loans. My guess is though that this is some sort of college fund that has been going on since my birth. But then why would this money be in my account and not my parents. I'm really paranoid bros

These things go in cycles. Some decades the US outperforms, other decades international equities outperform.

Not to mention those assets being overseas acts as a buffer against any domestic inflation or stagnation or whatever.
