so I read a book about the basics of investing and the stock market and it mentioned mutual funds.

a group that will buy/sell stocks for you, The book was from the 90's and American (while I'm a bong) so I'm weary that some of the terminology might be different. When I searched for them here I found something called 'fixed rate bond'. I'm not sure if it's something similar or not.

so I'm asking if anyone has tried them and how did it turn out?

I was thinking of trying it out with a small amount at first, around £100
