Even though As Told by Ginger was a much-maligned show(perhaps because of how pig-ugly the characters were, or because guys who aren't gay don't like "girly" shows), the theme song (both versions) makes me feel all wistful and somber and nostalgic, in a way that few theme songs have.

Shit man, those were the best. But I think it comes from the formats where you don't actually have a long background story, and the fun was just tuning in the shows and maybe, just maybe, seeing an episode you hadn't seen before. Today all our shit is serialised, so we just watch the episodes once, and in order, because of streaming. So you have much more engagement into the show's storyline, but you don't get that cool feeling "I've never seen that episode!", because you're always watching a new episode, and you know where you stopped and you don't want to skip ahead because of spoilers.
So that's pretty fucked, but I think we'll get good shows again, We bare bears is pretty good, also is Steven Universe if you ignore the fandom. It's progressive activism done in a good way, not in an SJW way
