I live by the ocean, which acts as a heat sink.

So usually it gets super hot for a week or so, then finally the fog rolls in and cools it all down again. But for that week it's hell. California really is supposed to be a desert, the only livable areas are the coastal regions which are moderated by the ocean's heat sink effect. Same story in Aus as I understand it.
