It's got a great, classic (not just because it's retro) way of storytelling which is reminiscent of Spielberg.The characters are solid and they don't overly dumb-down children while keeping their innocence.
The plot is a mix of sci-fi/horror and thriller. Cinematogrophy and dialogue are dramatic yet realistic.

It may not be everyone's cup of tea but to say it's over-rated is just retarded.

But in all seriousness, Rick and Morty is a modern iteration of Dadaist deconstructionism with american stoner humor thrown in. Like the Episode where Rick (who essentially is a bitter inebriated god) gets rejected by a collective consciousness bent on unifying the universe because she cant deal with him. Meaning while rick is essentially all powerful he is intensely lonely, not fit for companionship even for a creature who brings every living thing it can into itself. At the end of the episode rick is at the bottom of his depression and tries to kill himself but passes out before he can, and life goes on in an uncaring march of time.

In the same episode, morty and summer experience a nipple based race war after rick gets unity hammered on space drugs, revealing what people normally get up to when left to their own devices.

TL:DR Its a show for stoner college students / stoner college educated adults. If you aren't one of those things this show would probably come off as super confusing/pretentious.

There is no writing, no jokes, and the characters are terrible. Its idea of a joke is random thing (wubbalubba dub dub, get schwifty) science thing, being a dick for no reason. It is worse than the Big Bang Theory
