OP, from the guys I've met at the VA hospital who had horrible shattered/mangled legs, it really is best to just amputate it, beyond a certain point.

You'll see guys who spend a year trying to keep their leg, and they can barely walk and they are in such horrible pain each step. Their ankles will be basically frozen.

VA worker here (not a doctor). Well shit man, if they're just going to take your legs up to mid-thigh, maybe you should hang on for now. Ask if it possible to at least get use of your knees back, possibly in just one leg even. That ups your chances of being able to walk on prosthetic legs.

Hi OP, nurse fag here, I think you're making right choice. Not in orthopedics, but I know there's only so much they can do with surgery to correct the damage. Besides the pain and assuming you'll be able to walk, you're looking at several surgeries throughout your life. Prosthetic joints and such west, as do screws and plates, not to mention if any sort of infection sets in. I can tell you the doctors hate giving that advice, but they do have your best interests in mind.

I work in the ED, and had a patient the other day with a prosthetic knee due to injury from parachute jumps when he was in the Army. He told me he's had 7 surgeries and replaced the knee prosthesis 3 times over the years, and that's just one knee.

Don't feel too bad, it could be much worse. There are lots of support groups that can help if you feel bad or self conscious about it. Mental health is as important as physical. You can bounce back and be happy.
