Ah, when I read that I had a bit of a hard time staying awake! There are a few interesting parts, but in general, It didn't really have anything to grip me into it. It all seemed like ramblings relating to the time period that I couldn't get invested in, as I wasn't alive in the circumstances it was portraying.

I've been slowly reading The Art of War by Sun Tzu with commentary by several generals after him. It's some obtuse shit. I understand it, but Sun Tzu says some Taoist shit like "The best general wins without fighting" and then 5 more generals proceed with a Philosophical dick-measuring contest trying to sound the deepest. It's infuriating. Still some useful ideas in it though.

I've only read The Art of War without commentary, but yeah, that sounds pretty annoying. Trying to over complicate everything Sun Tzu says kind of defeats the purpose. I liked how concise it was, very easy to come back to.

If you like Science Fiction, I HIGHLY recommend Michael Crichton. He's my favorite author. Prey and Sphere were my favorites. If you like corporate espionage and the like, Airframe is pretty good. Timeline is good, but just a TAD overrated.

An introductory book to Kierkeegard philosophy. Just starting it, but it sounds like this guy tried to be what every hipster try to be these days, but he was actually intelligent and had something worth a shit.

Just finished Orx and Crake. Fantastic. Best book I've read in a long time. HBO is turning it into a mini-series, but it obviously won't be as good as the book.

Starting The Handmaid's Tale tomorrow.

If I get it right, he believed institutionalized religion is wrong because it turns religion into a series of void rituals, pure form with no meaning. Is our personal and individual duty to find our way to God. Paraphrasing one of his books: "Is ironic people are better Christians when they try the hardest to not be Christians, and even better than self-declared believers". Also, he believed the philosophy of his time was too focused on ideals and abstract thinking, ignoring the immediate reality of a human being. That is, Kierkegaard was born after Kant and Hegel published their works, and all the categorical and thesis - antithesis and synthesis mumbo jumbo was nice and everything, but it was too abstract and difficult to ground into everybody lives, too much talking about how our minds work, but few words about why we have a brain, and ultimately, what's the purpose of living.

Marquis de Sade. One of my favourite authors ever, and I'm surprised more /b/tards aren't into him.

If he was alive today, he would have loved /b/.

Some of the translations of his work have been toned down a lot, but look for Dr Paul Gillette's translation.

Also his short stories are pretty funny too.

Examples:

Seriously check him out if you haven't, you won't be disappointed.

Unless you get the Penguin classics editions. They're still good though.

Sounds interesting! I belonged to the LDS church for a bit, and It's rather hard to find meaning and connection to a god in such a cult like environment, so I understand. Seems like an interesting read! I'd definitely enjoy it if he's one to ask the big questions instead of trivial and unimportant inquires.

Not quite.

As I said, this book is just an introductory review of his work. It don't attempt to say why or how to religion, just what and why Kierkegaard believed in. Is a subtle difference, but is still a difference, just like explaining how to behead a person (cut in here, then there), and justifying it (Allahu akbar!) are not the same.

Now, on a personal note, yeah, I do think is hard to feel connected to God if we don't understand what or who He is, and is even harder when you have to go through a series of routines that nobody took their time to explain (and which bores you to death), and therefore any book designed to teach proper religion sounds unattractive. Still, is worth to read his ideas, because sometimes there's something important to heard or learn.
