>>726844357
I absolutely love Blood Meridian and would recommend it. No Country For Old Men is the same author and is also great. Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy is really funny.
>>726844647
Beat me to it.

The Count of Monte Cristo
>>726844724
The ending (of the whole series) was so dark though, but Adams chalked it up to his being depressed

Neuromancer created the cyberpunk genre and then the Matrix ripped it off.
Glasshouse by Charles Stross
The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein
Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad
This is a classic. Highly recommended
>>726844931
This one has held up so well. Someone told me Dumas was a black Frenchmen.
Any of you /b/ros read this? Got it a couple of months ago and read it for the first time, it's so visceral but I think it's a masterpiece

I'll second Neuromancer and Heart of Darkness -- the horror! the horror!
Try Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler if you want some good old noir. Then just follow recommendations based on that as there's a lot of good stuff from their contemporaries to ours too.
Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo
Anything by Donald Ray Pollack, start with Knockemstiff.
Darkness at Noon by Arthur Koestler
100 Bullets by Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso, comic series
Track your shit on Goodreads or wherever. Use that and the "people also bought" categories on Amazon to branch off from what you like.
>>726844997
I love Neuromancer and would agree it's essential reading, but Matrix ripped off Invisibles, the comic series, like crazy.

Blood Meridian is top 3 best books I've ever read. After finishing it, I reread it immediately. I believe it would be a much better choice for high school lit classes. Its a great expression of the dying American west. Better than that POS grapes of wrath.
Cormac McCarthy will be in the Mt. Rushmore of great American authors after he passes.
1. Child of God
2. Blood Meridian
3. Empire Falls by Richard Russo.

I'll have to read up on the Invisibles, I'm not familiar.

Oh, and don't forget classics you may have missed. A Separate Piece, 1984, Brave New World, Animal Farm, Fahrenheit 451, etc., etc. Read enough classic that you can sound smart and you can BS your way into pussy and power aplenty.
>>726846048
Johnny Got His Gun is amazing, I second this
>>726846303
It's more based on magic than tech, it's real weird, but worth a read.
>>726846285
I did the same thing with Blood Meridian. I gave it an immediate reread upon completion as well. It will never become stale for me. Im on read #4.

Dude, LOVE Cormac. You really like this one more than Suttree? I can understand it, but Suttree is hilarious to me.
>>726844647
Brilliant choice. A different type of humor from Suttree but this book more inspired how so view comedy and humor, it's that perfect level of whimsy and bleak depressing shit.
>>726844678
No country is great, but I rate Child Of God a little bit higher than that one, then Blood, then at the top is Suttree.
>>726845747
Yep. Great book.

I don't know why, but I HATE A separate peace, damn I hate it.

I found a recommended reading order of The Entire Robot series that takes into account the book release order but dances around the spoilers that reading in chronological order would have.
From what I've heard I'm really excited to read The Foundation Trilogy, but I think they're near the end of the list. Sounds much more interesting than the nearly modern Earth setting of the Robot trilogy.

Joseph Conrad's way to describe the flow of honor and morals of the old world always makes me feel like in our times the value of our "word" has nothing of sustainble tangibility... but probably it's only my own cowardness talking about the way i can handle this modern time.
>>726852312
I would recommend moderately versing yourself in philosophy before getting into classic literature. You will get so much more out of the classics (which I assume is what you were asking about) and lighter novels in general because any worthwhile literature is almost a roundabout way of discussing philosophy, or it at least features prominently in most if not all of the most well regarded classics of all time. You're not going to understand much of what is going on in anything worth reading until you have a basis of what underlies them.
Jumping into this list >>726851624, unless you are a natural or a genius, is like getting dumped off into the middle of the Atlantic not knowing how to swim. I doubt that fag that posted all of that read most of those or understood them if he did.
Also, if you really want to get into literature, 4chan is not the place to discuss it, don't go to /lit/, it's full of people who fetishize books based on cursory understanding and use their identification with these certain books that have been deemed to be cool to makes themselves feel not gay. It's not about reading at all, it's about ego.
So, get an intro to philosophy textbook and verse yourself on the common philosophical debates and ideas if you want to get anything out of reading worthwhile literature. Literature is essentially a puzzle and you need to be able to get some sort of basis for determining how to put the pieces together.
