Mixed opinion. Certainly Jews were rounded up and put in camps with horrible living conditions, we actually found these places and the US itself is guilty of doing the same thing to the Japanese during WW2. In fact the price in human life and health during Japanese internment is what led me to this mixed opinion, I think we genuinely didn't intend to kill or torture the Japanese during their internment but it seemed to just sort of...happen anyway. People got dysentery and other hygeine diseases which caused many deaths, guards were frustrated if not sadistic, assault and rape between both prisoners and guards went relatively unchecked and to add insult to injury people were allowed to steal what the Japanese left behind in the way of property and even got to keep it after they had been let out. I essentially think that it's impossible to pile people into small, cheaply run camps for long periods of time without killing a bunch of them - to confine lots of people safely and sustainably is a relatively new achievement and costs quite a lot of money if our penal system is any indication.

To this end I think the Holocaust was a rush job performed with a minimum of effort and resources to preserve them for wartime production. Millions were shoved into train cars and trucks, abducted with probably no warning and were given very little information beyond "shut up Jew" or "because you are a Jew". You get lots of frightened people starved for not just food but information and you end up with a rumor mill spinning at a furious pace. There are SO MANY rumors about what happened during the Holocaust that not all of them could possibly be true, some are absurd to the point you immediately know them to just be someone's imagination going wild with anxiety. On the other hand Joseph Mengle did do human experimentation on them, though examining him I would think his only thought about it would have been "Oh, good, now I don't have to use Germans.", he was a true mad scientist.
