I'd rather not. I don't think anyone should tell you what to like or find interesting in a picture. It's like explaining a joke.

I completely dislike this one for it's garish use of colors. If you'd turn saturation off on it and focus on gesture and composition, you'd see how awful the bench is and the allover composition is shabby.

I disagree. You can understand any kind of art piece, if you spend enough time contemplating on it. It helps to know art history and the circumstances of the artists life, but at the end of the day, you bring your own interpretation. it's not necessarily right or wrong.
You can like a painting and still not know it's implications (political, social or whatever).
>>721466902
Oh my life.
Did I type this?
*you cant look** at a piece and expect to understand it.
Especially if you did not create it..
>>721464721
>>721464900
Ah yes, love both Thiebaud en Diebenkorn.
Did you know Diebenkorn was heavily influenced by Matisse? Sometimes the resemblance between their works is uncanny. Pretty cool.

>What are the chances?
>>721467564
Oh my god.
No matter how much you gaze at a say painting you aren't going to understand it if you didn't create it.
You can try
But art is opinions and conjecture
Do we really know what Mona Lisa is really smirking about?
>>721467690
I saw Diebenkorn in London, Royal Academy. It was a pretty great insight into his work. I usually can't relate to constructivist and Bauhaus style art, but Diebenkorn has a very organic way of painting. It never gets old. He even painted on ciagar boxes, the silly bastard!
Kittelsen
>>721467564
>You can like a painting and still not know it's implications (political, social or whatever).
I'd argue the implications are almost entirely irrelevant. What makes a painting effective isn't its historical context, but what's in front of you.
>>721467857
Do we even know she's smirking? Even that is up to interpretation imo.
>>721467857
Art is meant to be appreciated, not "understood". We're not talking mathematics or biochemistry, here.
>Enjoy the art, absorb all of it's subtle flavors, textures and nuances and let it transport you. That is the purpose of art.
>>721467997
Exactly
Interpretation
Not complete understanding
For instance
What do you "know" about Mona Lisa?
Probably a lot less than adderation
Right?
>>721467857
hey pleb, fuck the Mona Lisa. It's a great painting no doubt, but don't jump at the big ones that have become clichéed.
I actually prefer the early version. earth tones and high contrast
>>721467901
Exactly, he somehow is able to make the pragmatism that defines works of others working in those genres come to life. Is the Diebenkorn stuff in the Royal Academy part of their collection or was it in exhibition?

>>721467857
how about it doesn't really matter too much what the artist was intending?
many great artists actually worked from paintings of earlier artists (Bacon took Velasqeuz Pope painting and created his very own rendition).
the vast majority of artists would rather not explain to you in every little detail what they were getting at.
I've read a way of interpreting Lost Highway by David Lynch and thank fuck I forgot about it. Totally ruined it in that moment.

What I know of Mona Lisa is that Michelangelo painted it as one of the World's First Successful Trolls. If you study the Mona Lisa carefully then compare the facial features carefully with other self portraits done by Michelangelo you'll see it's actually him.

I really like this one, but none of the online representations (including this one) do it justice. The actual painting is huge, more than 10 feet long. If you stand close it it just turns into dots, and only resolves into a painting when you step back.

the vast majority of artists would rather not explain to you in every little detail what they were getting at.
Sorry about the copy paste I hate doing
But youre right.
Not many artists will explain the meaning to many people.
Thus the mystery is created
And the meaning lost.
And no matter how much we look upon the work and believe we understand the meaning
Perhaps we do not.
>>721468518

>I'd argue the implications are almost entirely irrelevant. What makes a painting effective isn't its historical context, but what's in front of you.
Well that's the thing. Paintings change as we and as generations change. Just take this obvious example of Selfie-culture: We can't look at baroque paintings the same way people did before all the common narcissist attitude of our day and age.
biographical info does help understand how the painting came about. And it's very interesting to put into consideration what things have influenced the painter at the time and how he branched out from there etc.

kek, never realised
>>721468964
>>721468299
thank fuck it isn't, but some paintings are. you can't deny that.
generally, politics in paintings can be so fucking tiring and boring
>>721468879
The more an artist says about a work, the more they limit the possible interpretation. Great art is great because everyone can look at and see something different. If the artist tells you it means THIS, then all those possibilities collapse into just one.
tl;dr artists should shut the fuck about their work

most of the time, questions like "But what is that thing there?" are a total mood-killer.
I've read a preface on Magritte, essentially saying he was actually a shit painter - it was all the stupid opinion by the author. It biased me so much, I couldn't help it, the words rang in my ears as I looked at his paintings.
Fuck these opinions. Most of the art historians nowadays want to contribute to the reception at whatever cost, they don't care if they create ludicrous theories or trash an artist for whatever aspect they try to talk bad about.
I stopped reading texts in exhibitions long ago. I don't need people pre-chewing my dinner.
