Ensure you get a national defense and global war on terrorism, a good conduct medal, and one or two less crazy ones such as an overseas service ribbon or a navy and marine corp achievement medal. Do not try to make yourself a rank that is too high unless your older for which case you need to have a reasonable number of ribbons for your rank and your rank should match your age.

the only way you can pull it off without getting fucked is knowing the knowledge of the uniform, ribbons, general military/unit knowledge, and if youre pretending to /grunt/ then you'd need a decent story if youre trying to sport a CAR, combat V or purple heart.

after watching the numerous stolen valor videos, the BIGGEST reason people get caught is because they look fucked up. A fatbody in a uniform that doesnt fit, misplaced or missing patches, ill matching uniform pieces, or wearing an unauthorized uniform (such as cammies unless army/chairfag) in public. OP's picture shows a MSGT rank but obviously that dude isn't old enough to feasably be in such rank, regardless of billet/MOS.

The only real trump card is that they may request to see your CAC or your veteran ID. this is not an easy task but if you really do want to suck some dicks you might be able to pull it off, but never to a 1:1 copy because Gov't ID's have chips into them (for data access/scanning) that you can't conventionally buy. That's the biggest issue and pretty much undefendable if you get called out, because if you don't show one, you look like you have something to hide.

If you're going to pull it off, have a nice, well maintained uniform, appropriate ribbons, some form of believeable identification, and an appropriate rank for your age (you should probably never pretend to be more than an E5/O3 to be honest). Also have a good backstory and something that ties to an actual appropriate unit.

Ultimately, I'd say dont do it. You're a huge faggot if you do, and whether or not it is illegal where you are, you will likely get in trouble with the establishment you go to, the girl you're trying to fuck, and generally your life will crumble when you eventually give up that you didn't earn shit. It's a really big deal to anyone that is or was in.

And the discounts are usually shit, and if you ask for them you look like an ass.

The only real benefit is the GI BILL. I got my Bachelors through that program. And not just the schooling, but actually got money to cover personal expenses like food and rent. but to get that they will check all you crap. You can't just put on a Halloween army uniform, and say you're special forces.

I'm a vet and I can tell you nobody's going to prison or even jail for stolen valor. The law against stolen valor is as old as the constitution. It was written in the days when presidents could shoot traitors on the White House front lawn. It is not enforced today. Hell even deserters aren't punished today. You could literally walk off base and burn your uniform and nothing would happen to you. Worst case I saw one deserter spend two nights in county before the ucmj officials told local police let him go.
