If someone wants a different type of room from the original reservation, then I can switch it out, but only if there is space available. If there aren't any vacant rooms of that type, then the switch can't be made.
If someone doesn't have a reservation and the hotel is sold out, and so is every other hotel (because we call around and check their numbers), then the only advice I can give them is to keep driving. That's why you plan ahead on busy weekends.
If you don't have a reservation, and you expect the guy at the front desk to find you a vacancy at some other hotel, then you should understand that you are far less of a priority for guest services than people who have reservations and are actually staying there for the night.
