Robert Johnson the black guitarist in the movie is a real famous blue player, he has said he sold his soul to the devil to play guitar real good, Irl and in the movie. The guitar player says the devil is a man who travels with a hound and has a very deep voice, the Sherriff has all this throughout the movie. But at the end when they are about to be hung the guitar player doesn't say anything like hey that's the devil I sold my soul too. That's weird

The sheriff fits the description, pursues the "protagonists" (if they can me called that) even after they manage to do some good in the world and be pardoned, captures them and attempts to kill not only them but the guitarist as well.

There was no reason to try and kill them on the spot, there was less reason to kill the guitarist.

If he was the devil though the death of the guitarist would certainly leave the guitarist to pay the price for his deal early...

Really the movie gets a little more interesting the more you think about the implications. So many things were covered by it almost effortlessly. it just seems to have a degree of realism while using a few metaphors and outdated thoughts. (but not too many)
