I can't go wild and spend a 1,000 or more dollars on a tricked out super high quality rifle i'm looking for something in the 500 to 600 dollar range that's reliable and good for a first time gun owner, anyone have an recommendations?
>>
>>720084003

This really has to suck. I live in TN. I can buy practically anything privately and not undergo any checks or paperwork aside from signing a bill of sale. Even big stores can have you out in 10 to 20 min. I can legally conceal even a pistol loaded/chambered in my car without a carry permit.

Consider moving.
>>
>>720084345
S&W M&P Sport II
Palmetto State anything, as long as it isn't from their PTAC line
Or just build your own

I would probably wait a few months though, I see gun prices dropping a bit since we now have a president that isn't trying to destroy the second amendment.
>>
>>720075849
Because even decades later Ak47 variants still better than your shit rifles. And also rifles are not good for self defense at home as their bullets might go through walls killing your own people
>>
>>720084345
depends how much effort you want to put in. you can easily build one for that price and get specific parts you want, or you can buy a complete one, pretty much every gun company makes and entry level AR for $5-600

How difficult would you say putting one together would be for someone who has almost zero knowledge of the inner workings of a gun?

I've seen it said that it's more or less like legos but i'm not so sure. As romantic as building one by hand sounds and be nervous about doing it wrong and either injuring myself or damaging all the expensive parts I just bought.

Is it all that much cheaper to do it your self?

Never actually done it (yet), I'm the anon way up the thread who said I plan on building one after tax season.

From the many YT videos I've seen, it's fucking cake. This spring goes here, this piece drops in this hole with this other piece retaining it, etc.
Really only need a set of punches, a hammer, and an AR multi-tool if you're putting on the receiver extension and barrel.
A vice and vice block would be great to have, but isn't really required.
>>
because britbong...
>>
>>720085673
it's not really much cheaper. for your 1st AR buy a whole gun or a completed upper and lower.Down the line you can make upgrades if you want. they are fairly easy to build but to do it right you need to also buy tools and such, which can eat into your budget quickly. I've built a couple uppers and lowers only because i wanted specific parts.

If you're in a pinch, I know from experience you can build a lower with only a vice grip and a 2 piece punch kit for the bolt catch. You don't really need all the vice block punch kit crap, it certainly makes it easier though.

>>720086669
lowers are easier to build, i built an A2 lower in about 20 mins with a couple pin punches, a hammer, and some some common sense. the hammer was the hardest part because it's under so much tension and you have to put the pin through several holes that have to be precisely lined up. not as easy as legos but was easier than i thought
>>
Actually Im currently shopping around.

Debating on picking up a Ruger 556 or Sport II, or just getting an upper and lower from PSA or Aero.

People say buying the upper and lower separately saves money, but not if you want some acceptable furniture on it.

Still not sure what Im gonna do yet. I want to try and keep it under 700 bucks.

Yeah. I see some good deals from Palmetto. Ive heard only good things about them on r/guns and r/ar15 (sue me).

I want to get my barrel pretty short...But at what point does the govt get salty about that?
>>
>>720087663
Anything with a barrel under 16.5 inches is considered a pistol, and as such can't have a stock, and you can't shoulder it
>>
>>720075849
the last armed attack was in 2014 and only 2 people died, and the last one before that was 2001..
>>
>>720087663
if the barrel is under 16" and the atf wants $200 and your 1st born child to have a legal sbr. it's not worth it imo. There are some grey-area work arounds such as "stabilizers" instead of traditional stocks but you cant legally shoulder it like a stock.

I honestly rather have (and do have) a pump action 16 gauge for home defense, mostly because that sound will send any home invader running.

For me an AR-15 is a range toy. I like the idea of getting a longer range format gun, like the AR-30... I don't know of any public ranges with in a hundred miles of NJ that have a range long enough to really stretch it's legs though.

a pump action wouldnt be the best probably, as you would have the force of the recoil plus the force when you pump it, twice as many impacts to your shoulder. But that's just my opinion, i obviously cant say what is subjectively best for you.

>AR-15 for self-defense, and to protect your family, home

How the fuck is an AR-15 useful for these things? Do you sling it on your shoulder wherever you go? How do you maneuver it effectively through the hallways of your home? What about the time it takes to properly aim? What about the inherent risk to family members from rifle bullets going through walls or deflecting?

Why don't you just admit to the fact that you're a manchild living in a barbie dreamhouse fantasy with rifles like these, and in doing so you fuck up the gun debate for the rest of us.

Pretty much... Bird shoot is the best for home defense if you aren't the only one who lives there. And I don't even see how it would be useful for "defending murica", if they get past the navy and the fucking tanks, a semi-auto rifle is gonna do shit.

Fine, then if you want to play probabilities, how about the statistics on being far more likely to shoot a friend or family member than a legit intruder? In that case, less-lethal ammo for at least your first round is a bit more responsible mathematically, don't you think?

If I lived alone I would load buck completely... But I don't. I have a family. The last thing I want is for stuff to be flying through the walls.

Honestly my house is really secure, my defense is set moire to discourage intruders long before I would even have to shoot.

We have a strong gate around the house, solid wood doors with strong locks, we have a few obvious cameras on the outside (to discourage people from picking our house), an alarm system that is on at night, and my favorite feature is the hallway lights are RGB LED's and start flashing red with the alarm. Not to mention the sleeping rooms part of the house is around an easy to defend corner, I would easily get of the first shoot for anyone coming around the corner. And on top of all of that, My wife would be behind me with her 1911, if they are not taken down with the first shot.

I really think my set up is very secure.

give 'em both barrels there biden.

>>720098716
>a high powered light
>>720099261
>knowing your target

Ok, it's 4am, you've been suddenly awoken from REM sleep, the house is pitch black. Now the initial assumption here has been that your intruder is armed and dangerous, so you using the high-powered light while moving through the house will give away your position completely giving him ample time to hide and ambush you or whatever. So I guess your assumption is once you see his shadow or hear him, you turn on the light to dazzle him... except your eyes are only adjusted to the dark so you won't be able to make out any details of his face and body for many seconds, and that's assuming the light reflected from white walls and windows doesn't daze you momentarily as well (and it almost certainly will).

Then your rule is to know your target, you say? In your house in your neighborhood you must distinguish between friend and foe. The intruder doesn't have that concern -- the only human he will encounter is "foe". So somebody comes down the stairs with a sudden flash of light and a yell or something, and the intruder is armed, do you think his first reaction on getting his bearings is going to be to try to make out your face like yours will be with him? No, he will shoot to kill.

tldr; to know your target with confidence in this scenario requires time and cognition that you won't have.
>>
>>720100136
>time and cognition that you won't have
you wouldnt have it
>>
>>720100528

Experiments show that cognition for at least 15 minutes after being woken from REM is about as good as being falling-over drunk. Don't be such a faggot.

>>720100136
you shouldn't be doing room clearing unless you need to get to family members.
your first order of business after grabbing a weapon should be getting on the line with 911 and declaring to any potential intruders in your residence that you are armed and will defend life and property, probably having switched on a lamp or light somewhere in the process of doing so.

>The intruder doesn't have that concern
this is yet another disadvantage of being the good guy.

trust me when i say you will be okay with your own light unless you are pointing it into a mirror or you have a fucking 4k lumen light on your firearm. lights in the 200-400 lumen range are sufficiently bright to disorient people in a dark room but not yourself if you know it's coming. don't be that guy who shoots his dipshit kid sneaking back in.
and stop playing so much fucking battlefield, and for that matter this isn't splinter cell either.

Knowing it's coming doesn't let you physically pre-adjust your eyes or pre-saturate select nerves in your occipital lobe.

As for the video game comment, I assume you meant when I referred to the intruder doing an ambush. Well, you're the ones operating under the assumption that this intruder is armed, dangerous, and would rather stay inside than cut and run as soon as he realized someone woke up, much less that someone might be armed.

Sure, it can reduce the recovery time, as long as you maintain a training regimen of interrupting REM at a random time say once a week for... the rest of your life (since your brain will re-adjust quickly back to your normal sleep routine when it's no longer in emergency awareness mode)

no one is saying that you can cheat the physics of the human ocular system but your insistence that your head would explode upon turning on a flashlight is so absurd i'm worried you have never owned one, far less experimented with a weapon light to determine its suitability, yet still feel the need to post regarding them.

Colorado has the loosest law:
>"...any occupant of a dwelling is justified in using any degree of physical force, including deadly physical force, against another person when that other person has made an unlawful entry into the dwelling, and when the occupant has a reasonable belief that such other person has committed a crime in the dwelling in addition to the uninvited entry, or is committing or intends to commit a crime against a person or property in addition to the uninvited entry, and when the occupant reasonably believes that such other person might use any physical force, no matter how slight, against any occupant."

It requires unlawful entry into a *dwelling*. This has legal meaning -- it specifically excludes "muh lawn". Then it also requires reasonable belief that the intruder potentially might use some type of force, which is obviously easy to justify in almost every case except the obvious minor trespassing of someone who's obviously not intending to commit a crime, unlike what you seem to imply.

So yeah, school.

>>
>>720104296
>Then it also requires reasonable belief that the intruder potentially might use some type of force
or you can reasonably infer the intruder has intent to commit a crime against either person or property within that dwelling.

>>720104472
more like great. i cannot imagine living in a country where you could not legally use any force necessary to defend your dwelling in the face of unlawful entry. you should be able to reasonably infer that any person who knowingly forces their way into another's dwelling has ill intent in mind, doubly so if it is occupied and they fail to immediately flee upon discovering so.

most of Europe is pretty weird by that account.
>>
>>720104472

Colorado is the only state that doesn't require reasonable fear of danger to self or occupants, hence the "Make My Day" law. Only a minority of states have a strict Castle Doctrine which gives occupants complete stand-your-ground-style immunity. The majority have a duty to flee first and only can use deadly force as a last resort.
