What we should say we know about the discovery of planets so far is that it pretty much fits what one would expect from the accretion disk model given the nature of the tools we use to find such planets -- as in, our detection method relies on gravitational attraction, relative mass, and radius -- hence we have only found gas giants with one possible exception, and most have been extremely close to their host stars.
