If you really, REALLY want to do this do it, but if you just want a job, or you just can't get a job near you, get another job besides the Army or the other branches. If you figure out that you don't like that shit half way though, you're going to have an awful fucking time. Getting out of the armed forces is MUCH harder than getting in, anybody can get in, anybody. Another thing you need to consider is how physically fit you are for basic training. Now you don't even have to be fit to pass basic to be honest, anybody can pass basic, not because its easy, (it's not) but because it's impossible to fail if you want to be there, they'll make damn sure of that. If you fail hard on one crucial event, you'll either get it rescheduled, or just move to another training company. Another thing to consider is if you want to see combat, don't join. You likely wont, and that's just how it is. I know people who wanted to see just blood, guts, gore and explosions, and now there stationed in hawaii doing paper work and field exercises setting up tents and taking them back down again. But I cannot emphasize enough, make sure you want this. You're life will change DRASTICALLY weather you want it all the way though, or don't half way though. It's no small decision, think for a couple months.

And you can always cross train in the future. Skip OSUT and get some skills in AIT and then worry about combat "proficiency" afterwards. I use quotations because I was a better marksman/tactician than probably 75% of the grunts I ever met in the Army. It is what you make of it, really.
