vietnamese food: Pho ( which is soup ) and Bun with eggrolls and pork. This is like a salad with lots of mint and cucumber, and they put noodles on top + some meat. They give you a "fish sauce" which is sort of like italian dressing, you pour that on top of it.

middle eastern food is pretty bomb ( yuk yuk ) .. kababs, chicken shawerma, gyros... all pretty safe to american tastes, and lots of new spices you probably haven't had before.

Depending on where and how midwest you are, maybe you weren't treated to East Bloc dishes.

Chicken paprikash (there are different styles as well, I didn't know that until I was 28), pirogi, goulash, stuffed cabbage, stuffed peppers, and kluski (cabbage and noodles.)

Even growing up in NE Ohio my friends had no idea what any of those were and they'd have dinner with us and loved it. Heck, I cook for dates and they have no idea what those things are.
