ITT: Ask a dentistfag anything

Got about 1.5 hours to kill

Pic related, one of my patients
>>
>>718922374
Why you kill one of your patients?

How many guns do you wish you had vs how many you actually have.
>>
>>718922374
if i start to feel that my teeth hurt (nothing much guess too many sweets), how long do i need to lay of sweets?
>>
i have two questions.
1. what is the best way to whiten our teeth without having to go to a dentist and get them whitened?
2. have you ever felt up your patients when they are knocked out?
>>
>>718922734
none vs none. got 2 bows though

>>718922788
when do they hurt? cold, hot, chewing, on their own? laying off sweets aint the anwser. the key is proper and frequent brushing

lol i sure hope that the pic is Before the treatment
>>
>>718922914
1 sadly you cant
2 i dont use general anesthesia. illegal in my country for private dentistry. you can have it hospitals though for extreme cases like mentally disabled people etc.

>>718923019
yeah poor girl had a genetic disease that fucked up her enamel but she's rocking a kickass smile atm. that was aprox 2 years ago
>>
>>718922931
i brush every night (because in the morning doesnt make sense (you will have meal in 5 mins)), they hurt when i chew on something or drink water and its a light quick pain (caries i guess)
>>
>>718923179
brushing in the morning isnt to remove the food from your teeth, but the bacteria in between and around your teeth. it also makes you smell less like a slob and makes you feel fresher.
>>
>>718922374

can't you just grind down the teeth sticking out to make them even?
>>
>>718923325
but when you eat you get new bacteria which again causes smelly breath
>>
>>718923116
so the whitening tooth paste is bullshit? what the best toothpaste to use?
>>
>>718922374
So what's wrong with pic related?
Are you familiar with the technique of swishing a clear oil(like coconut) 20 minutes per day for health benefits and whitening?
>>
>>718922374
Do you take pictures of little kids when they're gassed out?
>>
>>718923179
you should brush 3x a day. minimum is 2x a day. i usually recommend brushing before going to bed and 30 mins after breakfast. (if your breakfast does not contain acidic foods/drinks you can brush right after)
sounds like medium sized carries. should visit a dentist before it gets worse.

>>718923325
exactly. but also to remove the remnants of breakfast

>>718923334
nah. that will fuck up the smile aesthetics and expose dentin (the inner part of teeth). her malformed enamel had to be excised and replaced with composite resin. i think i have a pic immediately post operatively but the colors look like shit because the teeth get dehydrated during the op.

>>718923492
thats why you brush after breakfast

>>718923543
yeah total bullshit. its actually abrasive and hurts your enamel. you want bleaching agents but only dentists can buy them.

>>718923557
amelogenesis imperfecta. developmental anomally of enamel (the brown/yellow spots)
no but im pretty sure it wouldnt work for bleaching.

>>718923632
again. i dont use general anesthesia.
>>
>>718922374
I have a gap inbetween my teeth, is it bad if I take one of those dental rubberband things people use for braces and put them around my teeth to straighten them and get rid of the gap?
>>
>>718923179
>>718923325

Also, what the fuck are you talking about ? Just brush AFTER your breakfast genius.

This way, people don't have to smell your morning breath mixed with coffee.

Damn, are americans all this retarded ?

On another note for OP:

I'm 25 and i've only been twice to the dentist for check-ups, and both times (different doc) they told me I had amazing "teeth quality" (can't remember the exact words) and that they thought I wouldn't have much trouble with them during my life.

Is this a thing ? Some people have way better teeth than others to the point they won't have trouble with them for a lifetime ?

What were your best & worst cases so far in your career ?
>>
>>718923492
but that bacteria hasnt been in your mouth for a whole night, dude. Also, you "should" brush after every meal. Most foods and drinks are acidic and damages the teeth over time. You shower, eat and sleep even if you have to redo it quite often. Brush your teeth, dude.
>>
>>718922374
Do you ever write yourself prescriptions for pain meds to get 'white people high' on your days off?
>>
>>718923695
I brush 1,5 per day approx. Cause I'am sometimes too lazy to do it on Sundays / holidays.
>>
>>718923695

>>718923754
>>
>>718923116

>>
>>718922374
I haven't been able to eat sugary or hot/cold things on the left side of my mouth for 4ish years now, and as a result I now have TMJ (yes I know that's technically just the joint's name) on the right side of my mouth. My dentist never found any cavities even though I have a history of getting cavities, and instead told me to get my wisdom teeth removed. Of course that didn't solve the problem. Is my dentist an idiot?
>>
>>718923116

>>
>>718922374
are veneers a pretty usual thing or are they crazy expensive so no one gets them?
i used to drink a lot of pop when i was a kid and now my teeth dont look very white anymore
>>
Hi, anon. Serious question.
What the fuck is this?
How can she treat this at home? Antibiotics?
Her gums are receding at the front two teeth. The gums next to it are inflamed.
>>
>>
>>718922374
I'm really bad at brushing my teeth, like once or twice a week bad. How bad is that?
>>
>>718922374
I have 2 fillings on both my 2nd last molars on the lower part one is black and one is white which one is better and can I eat anything I want with them? like hard nuts and such? I'\m always scared of them eventually cracking. Also I got a lot of tartar, is there any way to remove it without removing part of the teeth and is tartar a potential for teeth degradation?
>>
>>718924021
They shave off like 20% of your tooth before applying the veneers. Shit will not help the health of your teeth.
>>
>>718922374

how much am i playing with my life when I still have all my wisdom teeth in me (age 26) but they're all rotting ?
>>
I have a little hole in one of my tooth, it hurts when i eat from that side and it keeps hurting until the next day, but if i dont eat from that side it doesnt hurt at all, is that a cavity?

>>718923688

>>718923695
yeah genetics play a major role in saliva and hard tooth tissue "quality". best case was 32 yo patient never been to a dentist with perfect dentition. worst case (not counting genetic diseases etc, just human stupidity) was 23 year old patient who lost all his teeth and had to get total dentures on both jaws. had never touched a tooothbrush in his life. first time i saw him his face was so swelled from all the cysts in his jaws he looked like a hot air balloon.

>>
>>718924254
Not OP but are you sure it's not your cheek cells? I can scrape some off my linea alba every morning and it's similar to what you described.
>>
I always spit out a little blood when I've brushed my teeth. I guess it's the gum.

I use medium brushes, 31yo, never had caries, just a little dental calculus.

What could I be doing wrong?
>>
Had a root canal but the filling bled into the tooth, now the tooth is grey.

Can they do anything about it,? how much would it cost to replace it (upper left 1)?
>>
3x a day what the fuck nigger??? You fuckhead dentists think we dont have anything better to do? Do you realize brushing is more than 5 minutes? By the time you tongue scrape, brush teeth, tongue, and walls/roof of mouth, lips, floss, then gargle, its like 20 minutes NOT TO MENTION you have to be around a bathroom and a mirror, like wtf, 1/24th every day to brush my teeth fuck off and kill yourself.

This is the problem with you fucking dipshit doctors. "Drink 8 glasses a day, eat your vitamins, excercise, sleep 8 hour." My professors who had Ph.D. in their fields all tell me "For every hour you're in class, you should spend 3 hours studying.

FUCK.

OFF.

Theyre are not enough hours in the day to do all this shit you tell us to do, so fucking kill yourself you're stunting our evolutionary growth with this brushing obsession you fucking faggots.

>>718924077
she need to get her calculus removed. also you need to get a minor surgery to remove the central piece of "gum" connecting the gums to the cheek. cant remember the english term for it. cant treat it at home. easy procedure. both shouldnt take more that an 1 hour together and post op it heals in 1 week especially if the excission is performed with a laser.

I always get told not to use medium. Softies only. My thought process is the same as yours: harder bristles = better cleaning. But my DDS told me it's not worth the damage it does to your gums in the long run. Said to use soft and just brush longer.

are you legally retarded? What does any of that have to do with the dentist? They recommend you to do certain things, for your own sake, noone is forcing you and it certainly isn't recommended for the dentists sake.
>>
>>718924131
both are "fine". i prefer the "white" ones since they are both equally strong. actually scratch that the "white" ones are better because they simmulate the elasticity of the tooth structures. "black" ones are way too un-elastic? and have been accused of causing fractures. not to mention the aesthetic part. you shouldnt be cracking nuts with your teeth by the way. there are tools for that. removing tartar with ultrasound does not hurt the hard tooth tissues

>>718924132
there are prepless (no preparation/"shaving" needed). but even prepped ones are WAY more conservative than crowns. also 20% for a veneer is also WAAAAAY too much.

gingivitis stupid.
>>
Ive been brushing for years, and yet my teeth continue to decay, even without sugary drinks and snacks.

This possibly a genetic thing? My mother had the same thing.
>>
I'm on medications that are basically destroying my teeth. One causes excessive dry mouth and another fucks with my sinuses, along with grinding my teeth. So for the past 9 years I've effectively been sleeping at night with an open and dry mouth and occasionally grinding my teeth. Now I have several gumline cavities and my teeth are effectively fucked. I still take care of them, but haven't been to the dentist in a while. Considering like 6 of my teeth are eroding somewhere and my enamel is weak all around are they even worth trying to save, or should I just be looking to get some kind of replacement at this point? Only 29 btw.
>>
>>718924077
in the U.S. this is treated with grafting. it won't get better on it's own. it's a fairly easy, lifelong fix, but you probably need to see a periodontist.

Well if you're at uni full-time, you have what, 16-18 credit hours per semester? 20 if you overload like me? And since you're paying to attend and don't have a family to care for, it's much more than a full-time job -- not some 40 hr/wk thing. So yeah, 4 hrs/credit hr if you're in the lib arts (no labs) is only 60 hours/wk, which is the absolute peak of laziness for a college student, even if you're a Div1 athlete.

If you're on heavy meds my guess is you're a poorfag like me -- go to a dental school for treatment (make the appointment now -- there's a month-long wait) and they'll put you in for continuing care since you'll have a lot of cavities but you'll have a high likelihood of showing up regularly for appointments since you already see other doctors. Super cheap and all insurance covers. I paid out of pocket before Obamacare and it was $50 per cavity -- now it's free (MA Medicaid expansion).

Are you brushing properly? Brush should stay pretty much in place to allow the brisles to get between teeth and gums (if you hear a brushing noise, youre going waaay too fast).

Also floss and/or use those softpicks to clean hard to reach areas and massage the gums.
>>
>>718926130

I've got United Healthcare through Medicaid right now and it's pretty comfy with it's coverage. One of my friends from high school is a toothfag now so might ask him about it. I'm a poorfag but that has nothing to do with the meds I'm on; I have epilepsy, so it's either shitty meds or several seizures a week. Thanks for the hot tips, I'll look into it.

ok since i caught up i might as well try to describe how to brush. the toothbru should be placed on 2-3 teeth at a 45 degree angle towards the gums. half should touch the tooth and half the gums. then do small circular motions, like small vibrations. NO PRESSURE. just touch the gums. too much pressure can injure your gums permanently. do that for 3-4 seconds. then move to the next 2-3 teeth and so on. brush both lingual and buccal sides this way. occlusal sides (the ones you chew on can be brushed like youve been doing it your whole life.

you can also use floss or interdental brushes for 100% effectiveness. i recommened the interdental brushes. improper flossing technique can really fuck up your gums and 98% of people dont know how to floss properly.

also brushing is 90% of tooth hygiene. master that and you should be fine. mouthwashes, flossing etc cant replace brushing.

no problem

god damn it man. google! do you speak it?

>>718927342
on a more serious note in the US, the prices im referring to could be WAY off since i know your medical bills are crazy. how much does the average filling cost in the US?
>>
Teeth are all healthy. But since maybe i dunno 4 weeks ago? a tooth has been growing out of my gum. I'm getting it pulled tommorow but would like to know how this happens?
>>
>>718927540
>how much does the average filling cost

$40-90 at a dental school, $80-200 at a private practice.
>>
>>718927467
Wow. Wish they taught me that when I first learned to brush.
Thanks for the brushing info.
Good thing my gums are relatively healthy, considering the state of my teeth.
>>
Op legit question:

A few months ago i had a nerve drilled out on one of my teeth as it was exposed and causing me a lot of greif.

The dentist said it would be better to just pull the tooth but Im a little bitch, so i opted for the nerve digging.

Now i have a rotten discharge thats weeps from that tooth, i just suck it out and spit it a couple of times a day.

I'm proper horrified of the dentists (that was the first time in about 15 years since i had gone) so i'm really trying to avoid going back.

will this rot my gums and fuk up the rest of the tooth? or is a little discharge normal?

please say normal
>>
OP, I'm curious if Turmeric actually whitens teeth. There are many studies on the benefits of Turmeric and I have yet to find a source claiming otherwise. I've used it twice and noticed a slight difference of its whitening effects. Perhaps it's only short term, but does it cause long term damage? Should I stop using Turmeric on my teeth?

>>718928168
no its not. you should finilise the root canal treatment IF the tooth can be saved. otherwise have it extracted. dont be a little bitch. i can assure you its easy and painless. yeah you shouldnt leave it like that cause it can fuck up a lot of things.

>>718928248
wtf is turmeric?

>>718928298
should be normal then dont worry about it
>>
>>718922374
id on't even brush my teeth everyday.. always wondered how you can get so bad plaque like in your pic

No one has a reason to take info from your pics, really. Probably doesnt remove it automatically though.

oh lawd its one of those new age herbal shits. just a load of bull. if you want whiter teeth get a proper bleaching and stop wasting your money

actually i have a written form of consent for educational purposes from this patient. no personal info of hers were leaked and you got to learn from her pics. so 0/10 troll

>>718928686
no its a very important factor for why most of us have teeth after 40ish and carries prevalence is WAAAAAY down in the last decades.

>>718928749
again i dont use general anesthesia. the occasional sneak peek of tits or a thong is nice though
>>

>>
>>718928165
>i should move XD

It's not like all that inflated price goes directly into your pocket. There's the layers of insurance you need to buy for yourself and your practice, the inflated cost of drugs, etc. Regardless, dentists are uniformly quite rich and never unemployed in the US.
>>
>>718922374
What's the best type of denture? I had all my teeth pulled like two years ago and the dentist who did it claims my jaw bone needs to be ground away with just novicane and no pain pills afterwards and I feel like that's bullshit.

>>718929194
even though its a troll ill answer. proper brushing and oral hygiene takes 5 mins. so 2-3 time a day means 10-15 mins. simple as that.
brush 3-4 mins. flosh/mouthwash 1 min

and yeah for every 1 hour of class you need to spend more time studying by yourself.

>>718929356
yeah. atm dental paradises in europe are the UK, denmark and the netherlands. but having an MSc and doing a good job is pretty rewarding even in shitplaces like Greece.

>>718929368
its bullshit. best denture is implanted supported one.

>>718929377
cause it turns "regular" tooth tissue into "superman" tooth tissue. hydroxyapatite to fluoroapatite. look it up. also in Greece i feel dentists are underpayed. keep in mind even a "simple" filling is a surgical procedure and the materials we use cost fucktons. also we studied for a crapload of years in fuckhard schools. its called an investment for a reason.

>>718929522
this

its cause of the good quality of the pics. even though i resized them to make uploads better. all teeth have these small horizontal lines on the surface. dont remember the english term for it. rough translation is "perimeter waves" its normal and part of enamel tertiary micromorphology

>>718929792
yes. bacteria exist in your mouth regardless. its the normal bacteria in our moths that cause carries etc. if you dont brush they just multiply uncontrollably and cause problems. its a delicate balance. 2x a day is ok for most people though. but if we recommend 2x a day most people hear 1x a day or less

i should go soon. will stay on the thread for like 5-10 more mins and then leave
>>
>>718928405
You should look into Turmeric whenever you can... loads of benefits not only for the body but it also whitens teeth. It does this with little or no side effects. Only negative thing about it is if a person is allergic to it or they take large doses (taking large doses of anything is bad). Wtf kind of sorcery is this??
>>
Which is better Colgate total or Crest total?

which toothpaste is the best for helping get rid of gingivitis?

I can get implants in other countries 1/5 the price as where I live, what are your thoughts on medical tourism?
>>
>>718930032
lol 0/10 troll. cant even begin to counter that. keep dreaming of being able to match swedish protocols and practices.

on a more serious note there are awesome and shit dentists in every country. best oral specialist countries in order should probably be: sweden, japan, brazil, italy, US and then the rest

>>718930089
i cant imagine anything whitening teeth without containing hydrogen peroxide or abrading the enamel. i will look for any published research when i get the time though. also webmd aint exactly the place to get medical info from ^_^

>>718930257
same shit different brand. all normal (total/complete/expert/herp derp) toothpastes are the same.
there are 4 major types
1) normal (almost every one in existence)
2) for periodontal gums (only for those with perio disease)
3) for sensitive teeth (only for those with hypersensitivity)
4) "whitening" (abrasive. only for stupid or uninformed people)

>>718930393
a dentist. gingivitis can only be treated by calculus removal. any normal toothpaste will help maintain your oral health
>>
>>718930055
hurr durr knowledge and paste costs a lot of monies. kill yourself.

And flossing/gargle takes 1 min? Kill yourself again, mouthwash alone takes 1 minute.
>>
I keep getting a small blister at exactly the same spot in my mouth
If I pop it in time it returns about three days later
However if I don't notice it it becomes inflamed and hurts like hell
>>
>>718930719
maybe constant tooth abrasion
>>
>>718930535
it can be bad and it can be good. in some cases you do get the same treatment for less because of different economies in different countries. a lot of the time though "tourist-oriented" dentists like to cut corners and you get maltreated and all the shit that goes with it.
if it has to be black and white im against it. but i know quite a few colleagues in other countries i would visit to get my teeth treated.

>>718930719
could be viral or fungal or even auto-immune related. proper hygiene would most likely make it go away but i would go to a dentist when it reappears to get it checked out

aaaaand with that i have to go. ill post again maybe tomorrow but cant promise anything. cya peeps. was fun
>>
>>718930547
so i can buy any toothpaste without whiteing on it and it'll be fine?

Microphones in teehts

I have a cavity on my bottom front most teeth on the inner side (like my tongue can touch it)
i've had it for I think 2 years now and it's slowly spreading to the other 2 on each side of it and has decayed some of the outside bottom of the tooth that connects to my gums. Unfortunately due to my financial circumstances I can't get it fixed any time soon, however I do brush/use mouthwash daily 2-3 times.
How fucked am I when I DO go eventually and will it be a lot of work/painful? Will it cost a lot or be a few visits?
For an idea of how it looks it's essentially some black that shows on the surface of my tooth in a small splotch

Yes... and? Really though if you dispute this you should most definitely kys.
>>
>>718931719
im 70% sure. its an unusual place to form carries. unless you have carries all over your moth you should be ok. its probably stains from cofee/cigs/coke/tea/wine etc

>>718931781
1) it doesnt contain hydrogen peroxide.
2) even if it did its in such a minute concentration that it cant do shit. they wouldnt allow just about anyone to use something that they would DIE if they swallowed. in the US you dont even have fking kinder eggs!!!
3) the tray isnt custom made by a technitian or dentist so it would be extremely dangerous if these gels were the real deal
sorry to burst your bubble

>>718931909
bleaching from a dentist

>>718932106
throw it away. there are devices to transmit sound that are really cheap and more effective. this is specialised equipment and wouldnt work in any other scenario. unless you plan to implant it in your own teeth

>>718932229
i answered this in a lot of my posts today. morning brushing after breakfast is to remove remnants of food and reduce the bacterial population in the mouth that formed the night before. when you sleep your metabolic processes go way down= no saliva=less bacteriocidal effect="normal" bacteria multiply way too much and start causing problems
>>
>>718932495
Price of such a device and is it illegal?
>>
>>718932495
Okay, thank you for the advice. Hopefully it's nothing horrible and just tartar as you say. I appreciate it!
