Basically this. There are some embarrassingly stupid atheists just as there are some ridiculously smart religious folk. But being smart correlates moderately with being an atheist and being dumb correlates very, very, *very* strongly with being religious. I don't mean religious in the "I was raised a Catholic but haven't been to church sense I was a teenager." sense, rather. in the "If you don't accept Christ as your savior you're going to hell." sense. Oddly enough there is a certain threshold of intelligence being religious can lead to all sorts of extremism. Some people are so smart they can rationalize anything. If they happen to be religious then it's easy for themselves to convince themselves of the correctness of their religion and necessity of forcefully converting (or killing) non-believers. Unfortunately nothing, including intelligence, seems to correlate with rationality.

Imagine magic like they have in high fantasy. I like to think of magic as a level of science so high we cant understand it. While magic like that doesn't exist in our world, who's to say some alien race isn't able to cast some kind of fireball like thing with a level of science so high we cannot understand it with conventional means? They would be using the same elements and just manipulating them in some unknown way. Like a chip in the brain that allows them to reform matter into other things. We wouldn't understand how they're doing it but they're still able to do it and that would seem like what we think of as conventional "magic".

Theism and atheism I like to think of in the same way. I think its probably very likely there is no god in the way god has been painted, this almighty all encompassing being. We cannot deny that a god figure exists or doesn't exist with 100% certainty. Maybe we just don't yet have a means of understanding what god is, or how a god would even function outside of how we fantasize a god exists.

TL;DR People who believe god exists 100% are just as annoying as people who deny god exists 100%.
