Admittedly having breached my forties I no longer expect to be a style icon but I have a half dozen long coats in various (men's ) colours of wool and a couple of trenchcoats. I also have several hats in the fedora style, and a large victorian era full beard.

On me, with my size, shape and facial hair it doesn't look cringey, rather it looks very old fashioned. I do usually wear with a full suit, but wearing either a Crombie style coat or a trenchcoat with a sports jacket, polonium shirt and jeans looks fine. Similarly in warmer climes a shirt and jeans works. Polo shirt without a jacket falls under the no tshirts rule however.

I also found a victorian fish headed cane for two English pounds a couple of weeks ago which turned out to be a Victorian sword stick when I got it home. Which goes splendidly with my outfits, but is illegal to take outdoors..now I've discovered it's a sword cane anyway..

My best advice is look in a mirror, match or contrast colour, texture and material. You'll know if you look cringe or not. Erring on the side of victorian gentleman is better than edging toward the cringey side.

Beige could probably work. Just a white shirt underneath with a red tie. People don't look down too much on colorful ties but it still takes away from the fact that a trench coat is always gonna stick out a little. The trench coat won't be the weirdest part of the attire and the red tie sticks out more but people don't care about your tie so it makes the coat look normal.
Some stylish jeans or suit pants and actual shoes, not sneakers or sandals.

Also I've found that the one instance trainers works is with blue camo trousers/pants with a navy blue trenchcoat or overcoat. The colour and texture works surprisingly well, it's also the sole instance a hoody works with the above.

Obviously the hoody and a fedora are not compatible. Also, with regard to a fedora, don't buy a cheap chainstore one. You can pick up cheap-ish vintage current fedoras online or buy a cheaper wool one from a tailor or milliner.

Doesn't help that I have a barrel chest and broad shoulders on a sub six foot frame, so if they fit in the chest they're a little long.

It costs a metric shit ton to get investment grade clothing altered sadly..especially in light of the fact I buy all my designer wear and suiting and booting all at dirt cheap charity shop prices.

Although not a trench, my favourite full length coat is a camel coloured cashmere overcoat by Daks, via Simpsons of Piccadilly. A nice 3 grand investment for whoever bought it originally and it cost me a mere fiver.
