Hi /b/ I will be visiting USA in a few months. But i've read that it is obligatory tipping waiters, cab drivers, wallet parking personnel, etc around 15-20%
Is this a must or can i leave the restaurant without leaving a tip? Can i be arrested if i don't want to pay more money unnecessarily? Why do you americans pay more money after you paid for your food/service?
>>704931188 Everyone swears servers and wait staff make less than minimum wage which by federal law of the united states of america is not legal so you don't have to tip if you don't want to. They still make minimum wage. Even when they complain about it. So fuck em. They feed lies but I've disproved that many a time.
In America we don't pay people a full wage. Tipping is similar to not having taxes factored in the list price of consumer goods. By not adding to tip or taxes to the price the consumer sees we can maker people think things are cheaper than they are in reality. It helps keep our consumer focused economy going and enables us to pay slave wages to people in our service industry. Adding the price of a tip plus taxes basically brings artificially reduced prices up to more logical levels.
>>704931188 Tip waiters 15% for average service. Give less if service sucks (or you're Albanian) or more if you're pleased with the service.
Don't bother tipping cabs, they're fucking you anyway. I tip my hairstylist and hired coach drivers (the kind that stay with you for a whole trip). In a nice hotel where they take your bags to the room for you it's normal to give a small tip. Same on a golf course where they load/unload bags for you.
We do it because this is a land of wealth and opportunity and we like to just throw money around. If you don't tip it means you're poor or black (I know, redundant).
Tip BUT only if you get good service, don't let some 17 year old slut feel entitled to your money just because it's "the proper thing to do". If it's shit service then they're getting a shit tip or none at all, that's all there is to it.
>>704931667 You aren't a guest, you are a paying customer! The restaurant provides a service which you in fact pay for. Sure tipping is a nice thing to do, but should never be considered obligatory, thats insane. Do you tip a gas station cashieras well? No! So fuck you!
As it should be. The whole point of a tip is a bit of a bribe to get faster, friendlier service. It shouldn't be my responsibility to pay the majority of someone's wages, but it should be my pleasure to reward them for excellence
>>704931188 you dont tip a cabby unless you ask him to run lights and go fast since he is risking a ticket.
Since you are visiting you dont need to tip them if you dont plan on going back to that restaurant. I honestly dont tip them unless they keep my drink filled. but if you are visiting you shouldnt really be going to just 1 place to eat.
>>704931188 I used to leave a tip with the bill But after hearing that the company's use the tips to make the basic wage up I just give a little directly to the person to avoid the Jew tactics that company's use U.K. Fag It's just a courtesy I don't tip imagrants tho
>>704931611 Dubs. Also what kind of bullshit denial are you stewing in faggot? In Michigan most servers make a max of $2.65 an hour. Its a stupid fucking system But if one disapproves of it enough they should just not go to these establishments at all rather than support them and shit on the pawns within the grasp of the portly felines who own and run the companies and shaft them simply because it's easy and they think it makes them more money. Which it doesnt. Kill. You. Yourself. Bury your body in the yard and let your mom cut your head off with the lawnmower. Dipshit.
Automatic gratuity was made illegal at least in new york, and rightfully so. I've tipped well a bunch of times but you should never feel you have to. I usually leave 10% if they do okay. It's not a lot.
>>704931188 If you tip your a fucking pussy.... they give you a charge for the service and you pay it.... why the FUCK would you want to pay more AFTER you have recieved what you paid for, IN FULL!?!?!?!
>>704931188 Yes, Japanese friend. When you ask the prostitute to puke in your mouth, she will charge extra (if she does it at all). And yes, if you force her to do it anyways, and don't pay you'll probably get arrested.
Was I the only that to understand what he was saying? You fags are really stupid.
I hate this fucking shit. I pay for food that was provided to me and that's it. If the waiter is really amazing, I give a small tip. But 15 fucking percent? Do I look like a fucking thief? And don't get started on the "lower than minimum wage" bullshit. If they have problems with their income, they should go to their boss or quit and get some serious job. Why on Earth must I give away my money just because everybody says so...
>>704931188 Around 15% is customary. The reason you should tip is because they pay these people dink, tips are the majority of their income.
Only tip if the service is good. If your waiter/waitress checks on you often, refills your drinks, and is friendly/courteous.
Also, always tip in cash. Some places (although illegal) will shaft their employees on their earnings.
>>704931985 >Don't bother tipping cabs, they're fucking you anyway. This. The majority of cabbies are rude pricks anyway. >In a nice hotel where they take your bags to the room for you it's normal to give a small tip. Same on a golf course where they load/unload bags for you. Also this.
>>704931188 Higher class places will charge you a gratuity of 15-20% if you're with a huge group, which can be seen as mandatory tipping.
Aside from that, it's just a way of saying thanks that isn't totally vapid for when the service person actually seemed to give more than half a fuck about you.
If you're young and student aged, then tipping is even more meaningful, because you probably don't have the same kind of money free, but not tipping is also way more understandable.
If you're wearing a business jacket and the waitress never once let your coffee get near empty, then not tipping makes you a giant prick though.
As for the system as a whole, some states even have fucked up laws where employees that can be tipped can be legally payed less than minimum wage, with the expectation that tips can make up the difference. So not tipping is not just rude, it's an employees livelihood.
>>704931801 this is false. paying minimum wage would not inflate prices at all, or even if it did, maybe by no more than $1.00 a plate. restaurant prices are pretty insane, and theres really no reason that a person taking and order for and dropping off a plate of lobster deserves to make less than a person doing literally the same work for a burger. percentage tipping is complete bullshit, and so is the lie that prices would go up by the same amount.
You will not be in any trouble if you do not leave a tip. You are tipping for the service. Waiters and other service people are paid a very small wage. This is how rich owners can stay rich and poor workers can remain like slaves. I would not return to the same place after not leaving a tip. It is a good way to get someone to spit in your food or take you a long way in. Taxi. Leave a small tip, ten percent is OK for a foreigner!
>>704932287 >>704932843 >>704932925 >>704933523 >>704933794 >>704934117 >>704934179 >>704934705 if a server does not make enough in tips to supplement their given wage (which is less than normal minimum due to the expectation of tips bringing it equal or above the standard minimum) to reach the standard minimum wage, the company/restaurant is LEGALLY OBLIGATED to compensate and make sure they were payed the standard minimum wage for their time. therefor, if they have a problem with a shitty minimum wage job and cant make ends meet, thats their own fault for not finding something better. "they're paid less than minimum wage" is not a valid argument.
I'm English, when I was 19 I went to New York with some friends, I was ignorant of the tipping meme, thinking it was literally just a joke that Americans *have* to tip
Anyway, we ate at some place, paid the bill and walked out. The water literally blocked the door and said "where's my tip?"
The service was completely average so I didn't even think of it, my friend thought he was joking so he said something like here's your tip don't wear flared trousers in a revolving door
So the waiter calls us a cunt and goes back into the kitchen, we're confused and walk off, about 10 seconds later we're being chased by 3 guys from the restaurant yelling down the street at us saying "pay you're fucking bill" and "no tip scabs"
This was about a decade ago but we still laugh about the fat Americans chasing us now.
Rest of the trip we just went to fast food because for some reason it's weird to tip them
>>704931188 America is a shithole, dont come here. Literally anywhere is better. Dont tip if you dont want to, but I wouldnt go back to that restaraunt afterwards unless you enjoy spit in your food. But really dont come here stay where you are just a fair warning
>>704935773 who needs a lawyer to fight for math? lmao. you could bring in the time sheets, receipts, and the sheet of your earnings for the night to your local police department and they'll tell the restaurant to fix it or face a court date. what are you, retarded? black? both? its not hard to get treated with respect when you're smart and white.
>>704937456 >>704938598 waiters at any decent restaurant (like, not a diner like denny's or something) can make over $100 in a night. i watched this happen repeatedly in a red lobster when i worked there. if you're smart about your finances, it really isnt bad money, especially for the time put in. however, most of those same servers would go out that night and blow 40-60 on booze and then whine about how broke they are. such is culture.
>>704940799 if theres a jar/box on the counter next to the register, sometimes people leave their spare change from the transaction, or maybe a $1 bill. it usually depends on whether the people working are happy, energetic, clean, knowledgable, and they get your order made right and clean and in a timely fashion. if the place is a shithole (likely) then probably not, unless you just dont want to carry coins around.
You see friend, the problem is you are going to the united states. Everything is ass backwards there. Here in Canada and the majority of the first world, a tip is a bonus that is not mandatory, if you genuinely enjoyed a server, taxi ride or whatever then you give them a tip. People tend to remember people who are nicer and as such if you visit a place often you would find yourself with the same server more often you dig my dude?
TL;DR, tip if you are nice and enjoyed the service. If the person is a shitty cunt, don't tip super easy.
>>704931611 Alright faggets listen up, chef for 10 years here. I know for a fact waitstaff make around $3- $5 an hour. (the latter if they've been there a long time) They literally make their living in tips and it's how restaurants can stay in buisness here in murica. It's shit I know. That said, what you're tipping for is the SERVICE, so if your waiter is attentive and checks on you, gives great info about the food, keeps your drinks topped off, and generally kicks ass, then their tip should be higher. Generally if the food comes out wrong or takes a long time it's not their fault. However, if you see the server fucking off while they should be putting in / getting your or someone else's food, then you're within your rights to tip less. Also, if you're in a party of 6 people or more, expect gratuity, and then a tip. The gratuity is to ensure the waiter (s) get something. I cannot tell you how many times some sunday church crowd of 20 fuckers rolled in and tipped 0 dollars.
>>704932822 Checked, and also no, it's because they generally feel they're entitled to not tip "because of how much money they spent". Granted, this applies to all walks of lower class and douchbaggery alike.
>>704931188 15% is find for average or decent service. Tip less if they were subpar, nothing if they were ass. It's a common belief that you foreigners dont tip because you're rude, but really some of us understand you dont have that. We also understand you seem disinterested in your server, and that's as we understand it because you're assholes to your own servers back home.
>>704944181 You're fucking retarded. Minimum wage is minimum wage. State by state, you can pay employees that earn tips less than that states minimum wage (under the assumption they will make more than minimum wage when they make the tips too --- because tips are taxed as income and not gratuity (a slight of hand to allow states to snag tax money, but only if they merge the concepts of wage and tips together, which is nonsense, but I digress)) BUT if they don't make in total more than minimum wage (ie: wage + tips) the employer is on the hook for the balance.
Nobody is going hungry just because you don't tip. If you choose a shit job that pays shit, that's your own problem, if all else goes to shit, you will get the minimum wage for the state you live in.
Worse still... this is a state by state thing, each having their own nuances... so... yeah... you're a fucking idiot.
>>704944307 I'm not paying more than i have to. The waitress gets paid for her labour, its not my job to pay her. If the minimum wage is too low then that's the governments fault or the fault of the employer. I'm not going to supplement someones wage when that's not my job. I've already paid for the food and service. However, if service is excellent i will tip but that's if the server goes way beyond the call of duty. Call me a heartless cunt.
>>704944391 Nah man, dont even see why this is a big deal... its just a custom here, just like any country has customs. And generally, when you travel outside of your country it is understood that you will at least try and not draw attention to yourself by disregarding local etiquette.
i mean, its only an extra 10% if you really didnt think they were up to snuff... maybe 9 or 8% as a subtle "you suck"
>>704931188 Number one: Don't come here. You are not fucking welcome. We have enough illegal aliens and niggers already. We're full. You can crash in Cuba if you want.
Number two: I know in like any other 'country' everyone is so poor they can barely afford to eat out let alone tip, but here in America (only REAL country on Earth) we tip our servers. Makes us feel better than the shit heel servants who bring our food. It's like allowing a slave to lick the crumbs off your table after you and the other white people eat your meal. So if you do make it across the border (where me and my revolver will be waiting to send you back to whatever third world shithole you call a homeland) yes fucking tip everyone if for no other reason than having the privilege of setting foot on American soil. Number Three: Reply to this post or your mother will die in her sleep tonight. (also will be raped by AIDS infested niggers)
I delivered pizzas when I was studying and didn't expect tips, but was grateful when I got them because I was using my own fuel, delivering to strangers houses at midnight in the rain and cold and regularly getting into dodgy situations.
Waiters write down an order, walk a few meters to pick it up, walk another few meters to plonk it down and are expected to simply smile and be friendly.
>>704931658 As someone who has worked in the restaurant industry for some time now thats not really accurate. Most of the servers where i work make 3.50-4$/hr but often leave with 100-200 cash in tips which is much more than they would have made even with a higher wage
>>704931188 Yes, you have to tip in the US. Waiters, bartenders, "wallet" parking people, barbers/hairstylists.
It's stupid and unnecessary, but that's the USA. It's another way the government tilts things in favor of owners and employers and against workers and employees. The burden of paying the waiter an actual wage is shifted OFF of the employer and onto the customer, who then doesn't even have any actual legal obligation to pay it.
No, you won't go to jail for not tipping. Everyone will just think you're a giant asshole and want you to go back to wherever the fuck you came from.
As a non american I thought it would be an issue but the reason tipping is so necessary there is because wages are so low. It actually balances out when you realize the food has lower base cost because the wait staff aren't getting a cut.
If the waiter is bad. I don't tip. If they are mediocre I give them 15% if they are good I will tip 20%. Now I hate the idea of mandatory tipping. If you need tips to get by then maybe you should get a better job that pays you enough.
>>704945765 you realize most states have ot give 10 an hr min wage PLUS tips? servers in cali make upwards of 20 an hr because of the tips ... lol for walking a plate to me .. i dont think so no in some states where they make 1.50 an hrs plus tips = 10 an hr ... sure ill tip
In the US if you don’t tip, people are not going to be very nice to you in certain situations. If you drink in a cash bar you won’t get served more than a couple drinks if you’re not tipping. The best restaurants you can get away with not tipping in would be Chinese. They don’t tip well either. But if you go out to a nice restaurant and don’t tip in the US you’ll get dirty looks and it would be a bad idea to go back.
>>704946100 Nice dubs, but this is a state by state thing... most of the people in this thread are retarded. In some states, it's minimum+tips, in others it's minimum-projectedtip+difference. What can be said without a doubt is that I don't know of a state that knowingly allows for any job to be paid less than minimum wage (be it, minimum wage, minimum wage - tips, or otherwise).
>>704946503 and I work at a restaurant in cali if any of my staff didn't do their job that we pay them for because they didn't get tipped extra money they'd get fired and sued for loosing me business and revenue quit pretending like you know what the fuck your talking about
>>704945679 Think about it this way. They get 3 an hour not counting tips, that's 24 for ann8 hour day. No tips that gets bumped up to minimum, which for instance is 7.25 here, so let's say 58 bucks, before taxes. That's 1,160 a month before taxes. Rent in the house I live in is 1200. Per month, they can't pay this rent. Without tips.
With tips, let's say about 100, that makes 2480 a month, which pays for bills and rent and food fairly safely.
>>704946606 A bartender in a restaurant isn’t the same thing as a regular bar. They have no power. They have managers etc. In a regular bar you have no recourse if a bartender wants to get rid of you. If you work in a corporate restaurant you should kill yourself. A high class joint or a small business wouldn’t let their staff be abused by non tippers or shitty customers. But yeah, if you work at a Chilis or an Olive Garden then you have to kiss the customer’s ass. Thank god I work in a real bar.
>>704946744 You make them work harder to serve you in order to earn a better tip. It makes them want to work harder, which means if you get legitimately great service and don't tip, you just made them work harder for no reason
>>704931188 You're not going to get arrested for not tipping but depending on where you go, if you frequently eat there and dont tip well you wont get very good service, it's shit but service gets pissed at you rather then their bosses for underpaying them.
I dont tip unless they were really great with service which is pretty rare but I'm not gonna pay for something that they are hired to do, it sucks that they dont get paid much but if i tip then it just continues.
>>704946834 thank god youll be fired the seconed the owner finds out your loosing them hella revenue beacuse poor little you didnt get his tips tonight when on good nights you can go home with 600 in tips for an 8 hr shift yet your bar already makes fat profit off the liquor sold
>>704946896 No it doesn't. They KNOW they're going to get 15% at least anyway so they don't give a flying fuck about doing their job well. They've made the culture so everyone has to cry about how sad and pathetic these poor waiters raising 10 kids on a less than minimum wage salary have to suffer so if you don't tip you're literally taking the foot out of their children's mouth and kicking them in the head. There is NO incentive to tip.
>>704946744 i think this has already been shown not to really work. good waiters don't pay attention to their tips much. some people will tip well, others badly. the vast majority will tip about the same. it usually evens out in the end. so you just do your job well and don't think about tip chasing.
Customers like to think it makes a big difference because they like the power trip.
>>704931188 I've worked in gastronomy alot here in germany and tipping is not very common, but when it is it is always to round up the price. Like for example, if someone orders 3 beers for 9,90€ total, they always will round up to 10€. Not much of a difference but money is money. But i myself do not often tip people, it depends on how nice their service was towards me or how good/fast they've worked like in a restaurant. But all in all, i wouldn't tip someone 15-20% of what i have to pay just because their bosses refuse to pay them better. It is not my job to support those people, it's their bosses job to do that.
>>704931188 In America, the rich billionaires and oligarchs have convinced everyone that tipping is socially and financially necessary, so that they can pay their slaveworkers less and idiot Americans make up the difference.
It's really funny, and they will argue like fuck with anyone who tries to explain it to them.
Pathetic yanks, they're so divided and argumentative between themselves that they're easy for the oligarchs to rule over - divide and conquer personified.
>>704947021 So you tip 15%? Most people don't tip that much. Average tends to be about 5%, if at all in some cases. A good number of people don't tip, and some even skip out on bills, which is charged to the waitress. Usually one every other day, more in worse neighborhoods. 15% is just the suggested amount. Not what actually happens
>>704946975 The owner trusts a good bt with their money, property, and inventory. I’ve been in the same bar for 12 years. You don’t know what you’re talking about. In a good bar the owner wants you to get rid of bad customers and keep the one’s that are good for moral. I work in a slammed bar. People have to wait to get their drinks and the people that are not tipping are not lost revenue because there are dozens of other people to take their place. Any good bartender prioritizes customers based on many factors. Cheapskates and annoying drunks go to the bottom of the list. If they don’t like it they can go somewhere else. We dispense a mind altering substance and our license depends on us not over serving someone. A bartender will never get in trouble for cutting someone off. So if someone’s not tipping, I just say they’re too drunk. I never mention the tipping.
>>704945764 This. That's how it's supposed to be done. Don't tip for bad service. Tip 10-15% for average service, and 20% for amazing service. And in rare cases, I've tipped up to 30. Mainly because I had been flirting and got her number.
>>704947029 >it usually evens out in the end. so you just do your job well and don't think about tip chasing.
But if you're a regular who tips well you'll get outstanding service. Servers will often fight over who gets to serve you if you tip above and beyond.
Example: A long while ago I went to a diner at which I eat regularly. It was around 10PMish and the waiter I happened to get was new. Whatever. I'm a patient guy. He didn't know the menu yet but he busted his balls as best as he could to serve us right. I tried to tip him $10 and he went to give me my change back. I told him "Nah man, that's all you I saw how hard you worked." Well let me tell you something. For the next year and a half till he was fired for drinking on the job I got some tip fucking top service.
>>704931188 You don't have to, but you'll seem like an asshole. If you get good service, it's good to tip. Most waitresses recieve less than minimum wage (my friend makes $4 an hour. her pay is mostly in tips), so there is that. Our system is fucking idiotic. If you take an Uber, not a cab, you don't have to tip. If you stay in a hotel and leave a huge mess for housekeeping, you should tip. If it's just a messy bed sheet, it's unnecessary. Resturants and taxi cabs are you only places you shoyld really tip, unless you think you can take the taki guy on in a fight. Those people are unpredictable and terrifying. Take an uber.
>>704931611 Complete idiot. Yes, they make minimum wage, but at the restaurant's expense. How many times do you think an empower is going to make up the difference to $7.25 before they fire you. Unfortunately, we have to tip to keep them employed. Personally, I don't mind tipping at all. I tip every person who does things for me. (i.e. Clean my suits, clean my house, wash my car, park my car, get my food, mix my drinks) It's just an expense of life. If you cannot afford to tip or don't intend to based on some retarded moral code, tell your waitress next time you go out to eat, before you order.
>>704931188 There is no mandatory tipping, that's why it's called a tip. That being said unless you were given sub par service it's considered rude/cheap not to tip at a sit down restaurant/diner. I don't go by %. I give them a couple bucks give or take depending on service
>>704931188 It is expected for there to be a tip for basically any personal service. Haircuts, massages, personal transportation, waiter/waitress, bartenders, bellhops, doormen, mechanics.
Just about the only time you don't tip is if someone is working a cash register. If the person helping you is using a cash register, skip the tip unless they're doing you a personal favor or went above and beyond the call of duty.
That said, you can just skip the tip pretty much whenever you want, but if you do, then don't expect good service if you ever come back.
>>704948389 Don't watch news often. Only time I watch news is for certain things, such as weather or political issues, and I always fact check the political issues. Everyone has a bias and I don't trust any news company trying to force said bias on me.
>>704932392 This is true, however, food service providers have their own little clause in what "minimum wage" is for them. It's generally about half of what the state minimum wage is for everyone else.
>>704948086 How much tip money do you get for for your job? Me, as a nurse, I get about 0. But being the only straight male in a world full of fags and women, the free pussy is my tip. All the cheating and fucking around saved me hundreds if not thousands on hooker money
>>704948655 Also, even though employers are legally obligated to make up the difference towards the state's standard minimum wage if they don't make enough in tips, it's a good way to get on the bad side of your employer and be terminated at the first opportunity.
>>704949048 HA! This is actually true. When I was a waiter in NYC, black people NEVER EVER tipped. If we saw a black family seating we would play rock paper scissors to decide who the poor bastard to take them would be.
They were always super picky, always making a fuss trying to get a free meal and being disruptive (ruining the dining experience for everyone else), always wanting to talk to a supervisor, and never tipped.
>>704949017 I just don't feel like I should be obligated to tip. It's supposed to be a kind gesture not "gimme my money or I'll spit in your food". And as long as people keep giving tips as a thing they have to do then employers are just going to keep underpaying them. It's a constant loop of "we give tips because they're employers underpay them" and "they're employers underpay them because we give tips". The only reason I tip is because of their great service or I'm going to be back so I don't want spit in my food
>>704933523 >Why on Earth must I give away my money just because everybody says so... Because you live in a democracy, where the laws are made by a majority of the voting public. If you don't like it, you can go to England and live there.
I always tip around 20% but there have been a few times I didn't tip mostly because I didn't have much money at the time myself. But this idea of tipping is so ingrained in our society that I felt guilty about not tipping for the whole day after I didn't tip, especially after seeing the waiters face and work they put into trying to please me.
Typically it is frowned upon to not tip, but honestly its more of a moral thing. Although people dont understand the point of the tip, since the reason for it existing is all but forgotten. If you really don't want to tip don't tip. If you dont care or want to tip somebody, then simply tip 10%.
10% is under the average by about 50% sometimes people take lack of tips seriously, because they believe that they didn't provide good service and become offended or upset with themselves. Typically when you don't tip some people assume there was a problem, and you dislike the way that they did things.
All in all, if you don't live in america and youll never see those human beings again, don't tip. If you get delivery every week from teh same place, same guy, I would recommend tipping. It's really that simple.
15% 18% 20%
Based on quality of service.
As you can see, 0% is obviously for if you have had a terrible quality service or had a problem with the establishment or person helping you.
Wow...lots of butthurt waiters in this thread! Check it out, I am a waiter at a fucking Pizza Hut, and I get less than minimum wage, but even here I can tell you that if you are not a complete waste of oxygen you will get enough tips to make way more than minimum wage. On a slow day I make around $8.50 an hour total, and on a busy day I pull in over $10 an hour. At a fucking Pizza Hut, for fuck's sake! I can't make this much money washing dishes at Denny's, that's for sure. So you can bad talk it all you want, but if you aren't making decent money in tips as a waiter it is not the fault of the system or the fault of the place where you work. It is because you suck at your job.
>>704931188 Don't bother tipping. US law states the employer must make up the difference for federal minimum wage if the employee's tips do not meet that amount. So don't sweat it, anywhere. If you feel like they were exemplary, then feel free to give what you like, otherwise don't tip. Also, if you do tip, do not use cash. If you use cash, they can get away with not reporting it on their taxes, if you use a credit card, their employer reports it on their wages for tax purposes. Keep them honest that way.
This, although preferably with the correct use of "their". Also, fuck people who come out with this line:
>if you can afford to go out, you can afford to tip
Just adds to the bullshit logic of it all. And if you're going to purposely give poor service because you've decided you're not being paid enough, either pull your head out of your ass or find another fucking job.
>>704950489 Uh yea it kind of is. It takes a village to raise a child. It is everyone's responsibility to make sure children are provided with everything they need. I can point you to a book our next president wrote that says just this.
>>704950745 Other people's children are not my responsibility or concern. If they do become my concern, it's because their criminal pieces of shit, and likely about to become the next firearm death stastic for being a dindu nuffin.
And if they find another job someone else will have to fill that hole. There will always be people serving food. Should these people be paid an unlivable wage because society as a whole looks down on them? That's a pretty shitty view.
>>704931188 >I will be visiting USA in a few months. Ok, but it's shit here. :-) >But i've read that it is obligatory tipping waiters, cab drivers, valet parking personnel, etc around 15-20% Yes. If you don't, they get pissed, ESPECIALLY valets.
>Is this a must or can i leave the restaurant without leaving a tip? You CAN, but they won't like you. Restaurant workers do NOT get paid minimum wage. Their wage IS tips.
>Can i be arrested if i don't want to pay more money unnecessarily? No, but you might get chased, if your waiter/ress is angry >Happened to us before. And we DID leave a tip; bitch didn't see it under the cup or something. Fucker.
>Why do you americans pay more money after you paid for your food/service? Wait Staff do NOT get paid minimum wage is why. Also, many other groups do NOT.
Minimum wage is $9/hr. Wait Staff get paid like $2.13/hr or some shit, unless the employer is really nice.
If tips do NOT equate to minimum wage for hours worked after a month, however, the employer must make up the difference
You have NOT paid for the service UNTIL you pay the tip. You ONLY paid for the food.
And if you DON'T tip, and EVERYONE STOPS tipping, the prices for food go through the roof. >As if that makes a fucking difference, since you HAVE to tip anyway
>inb4 Why? Because retarded, that's why
[Sources] Department of Labor https://www.dol.gov/whd/minwage/q-a.htm
>TL;DR: >Tipped workers are NOT paid minimum wage, so when you DON'T tip, it raises prices in restaurants to make up for the non-tippers. >That's why you can get a full breakfast for $10 per person... BUT you then have to tip between 10-20%, unless they sucked. That's YOUR prerogative >But NO, you will NOT get arrested; you'll just piss people off and maybe get chased (and spit in your food next time you show up)
In all the places I've worked as a cook tips enter a pool and 15% goes to the kitchen and are distributed based on weekly hours, the same for the servers/runners/bussers/hostess. If you don't tip everyone collectively gets the shaft.
Tipping is the socially accepted behavior. There are no legal ramifications if you don't tip but social mores are enforced informally.
>>704931658 It came up because alcohol was served during "Dry law" for extra cash. And nowadays it just lingered and companies pay less for the workers because hey, customers do it for them. I am a waiter also, I am happy when they tip, I tip sometimes for good service, but I fucking hate this practice. No tip, humane paycheck.
Don't listen to this guy >>704950796 - tips are a gratuity - latin from gratuitas "free gift." They are a reward for service, if such a reward is warranted. If the service is mediocre or less, don't tip, it's that simple. Their employer has to make up the difference to make sure the employee makes federal minimum wage. Not making minimum wage as a tipped employee is one way of showing you have poor customer skills, and should likely seek work elsewhere.
>>704950921 It's not my responsibility to help them. I didn't fuck the mother, not my problem. If you can't raise a kid properly, then it should be incarcerated or killed, along with the parents who raised the piece of shit like that.
>>704951355 Lol fuck no. Most of the fast food places around me are filled with unhappy looking porch monkeys. Why the fuck would I tip a nigger? I've quit going to most fast food places because I don't want Jigaboo Sambo fucking with my food because of his prejudice against whitey. That and I like to have my order done correctly, negroids can't follow instructions, even simple ones with pictures to help.
>> Muh deserved tip If service is shit, then no tip... Flat and simple. This USA rule is beyond stupid: this must be deserved, not by bending over backwards, yes, but the point of going to eat outside is to pay for the price the meal is advertised on the menu. What a bunch of fucking peasants..
>>704951399 I'm not sure how participaion rate is defined there but it usually includes those unemployed and seeking work. Also the fall over ten years is only 3% - I'm not convinced that it is anything more than noise. And I don't see a correlation with the chart. I also don't understand why you think a fall in labour force participation is a particularly bad thing.
>>704951986 Unemployment rate is the people looking for a job. When the labor participation rate drops, it's because people have decided they are not going to work. Which leads to either them living off mommy, them living off welfare, or them committing crimes for money. Leading to higher crime rates, larger budget needed for welfare, and neckbeards.
