Man, I miss this guy. I guess that's how it goes if you want to be one of the greatest.
>Cliff was the best guitarist Metallica ever had
<------This guy was. By far.
a third vote for Mustaine.
He's also been placed as the #1 guitarist more than a couple times by authorities of the genre and we know he didn't get that nod because he's a nice guy.
As far as "best guitarist", to talk about the Bucketheads and Malmsteins of the world doesn't make sense. Playing solo and scaling the fuck out of the strings is the equivalent of jerking off on the guitar. It's not very musical and causes massive ear fatigue. Those guys are big fails--otherwise they'd actually be in a band and be making actual music instead of jerking off on a guitar and pushing their rep nonstop. You have to be pretty casual to upvote those clowns.
Pic related. IMO him and Billy Corgan are two of the best, most underrated guitar players of our time.
millenials voting for bucketfuck and mummstine
hurr-durring all over the fucking thread
Geddy is merely an average bassist you dumb fuck. If you are going to post someone from Rush, post Alex. But it's really Peart who is the genius that makes them musically relevant as musicians.
Gilmour does not even belong in the conversation. He is a mediocre guitarist at best. Page is overrated and only above average. Stevie Ray Vaughn is certainly top ten.
Only other legit top tens itt:
Not yet mentioned but top 10: Joe Satriani, Eddie Van Halen, B.B. King, Randy Rhoads
Honorable mention: Gary Hoey
You thick CUNT Gilmour has 2 solo's in the the top ten guitar solo's of all time ..VOTED by the rest of the pro guitar fraternity..
That includes number 1 you fucking ingrate fuck who quite obviously don't know the difference between Mixolydian and your fat Mothers arse...
NOW FUCK OFF!!
Didn't notice you were even there..
That says something doesn't it!!
>thinking votes from a bunch of self-interested faglords makes best fiddle player
>being this dumb
>being this gay
>broadcasting it for all to see on 4chimps
FYI, Gilmour has admitted numerous times that he is "just an average guitarist", to his credit by the way. The music he makes is some of the very best, no question about that, but as a "guitarist" he is just ok. There is not even a single Floyd tune that shows off anything but slow strumming with a pissload of effects anyway. He literally cannot play with serious guitarists. He'd look like a chimp next to them.
Get a clue fagtard. You know nothing.
Again, having said that, I love Gilmour for what he does--making great music--though Waters was the real talent.
Coming from an anon who thinks B.B. King is better than Gilmour, or even putting B.B. before so many others in that genre that blow him out of the water, your opinion is...laughable at best.
You utter CUNT..DO you really think a good guitarist is defined by the fact he can play fuck knows how many notes with the guitar behind his head....
THINK ABOUT IT YOU DUMB FUCK...
It's surely defined by the fucking music...in as much a bricklayer's talents are defined by building a fucking good house..
NOT by the fact he can build a run of the mill house blindfolded..
FUCK ME.../b/ really is attracting some real sad sad fuckers..
FOR fucks sake I'm all for free speech, but there really should be a law about going round with a loaded retarded personality!!
your comments re; gilmour and page really show your young age.
I've seen Satriani live and got kinda bored, too much of his stuff is directionless although I dig most of his "Satriani Live" album and if you mention Satriani then mention Steve vai if you know your shit
"David Gilmour: most overrated guitarist ever?"
--An actual musicians board thread
fyi, the debate is always whether Gilmour is more overrated than Page or vice-versa
the consensus is neither of them belong in a serious guitarists discussion of top guitarists, but some fucking 5th grader always mentions them
makes you fucking laugh...he's only called BB cause he never FUCKING leaves that Bflat..
Did you not just deride some other anon for going by votes of musicians? Clapton is the most overrated, by the way. You're probably a progfag or a numetal fag. Enjoy your Dragonforce, you douchenozzle.
Fucking Orianthi Panagaris
i understand where you're coming from, but the assumption of what makes a guitarist 'god-tier' is totally subjective and it really is a waste of time to try to convince someone that their opinion of music is wrong because yours is right
not him but you must be a teenager who is intellectually challenged
bb king is a guitar god to all of the top guitarists
he invented the sophisticated solo with an electric guitar
there literally weren't guitar solos before bb king
fucking invented 4 different types of guitars
gibson literally launched a guitar series called the B.B. King Lucille model (he named his guitar "Lucille")
invented shimmering vibrato technique
invented fluid string bending
known as "the king of blues"
played across genres, blues, rhythm and blues, rock
did 342 shows over his career, spanning more than 70 years as a performer
you're retarded, kid
Enough with your pointless discussion.
THIS motherfucker can play!
>It's surely defined by the fucking music...in as much a bricklayer's talents are defined by building a fucking good house.
That is not analogous at all. Oh, and by the way, a "bricklayer" doesn't "build a fucking good house". He's a dumb bricklayer. Nothing else. He picks up a brick, butters it, and puts it down. All the workers "build" the house. This thread is about "guitarists", not "music", not "bands". You are a fucking retard who can't argue, can't logic, and keeps changing the subject and moving the target every time he is proven wrong. You've done this in these threads each and every time and everyone thinks you are a fucking imbecile.
All you are doing at this point is proving you are brit, because literally no one is this fucking dumb . . . except brits.
>your comments re; gilmour and page really show your young age.
Just so you know, I'm in my late 50's and am a session musician who has played with some of the very best, including several ax wielders in this thread. If you are in the industry and I mentioned my name, I'm sure you'd know it.
I didn't mention Vai because I limited it to top ten. Love Vai tho.
>B.B. invented the sophisticated solo?
Guess you never heard of Les Paul right? Django? Charlie Christian, like a shitload of other players?
>They LITERALLY launched Lucille
He didn't invent the 335 you twat...
>Known as the king...
You could name your dick Godzilla but it would still be the same size, dummy. Bob Dylan is a prolific writer, but nobody makes claims about him being a king. Oh and two words. Hubert Sumlin. Also, not sure on this but you might wanna look into the difference between a 'lead' and a 'solo', Einstein.
The facts were merely being stated as a measure of a statistical result from a poll of world respected guitarist's.....Nothing more!
I'm not that anon, but I remember when Gilmour was interviewed and made those comments and he went to great lengths to explain why he considered himself a mediocre guitarist. He explained that the music he plays is not musically complex but rather "simple" from an instrumental standpoint. He also said he had tried playing other types of music and simply cannot. By the way, Gilmour started out as a blues soloist and his idol, according to him and whom he tried to emulate, was none other than B.B. King.
I see a distinct lack of Eddie Van Halen in here
You know we can see the count right?
How fucking dumb are you?
Maybe you should go read a book or something.
You are literally too dumb to be here.
Not exactly, friend. But I have been nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Not that that makes a difference. I'm quite certain you have heard some of my music. Though I wonder if you are old enough now based on your last two comments.
Did you come out of you mothers twat with the inability to think...
YOU are obviously stuck in a padded cell if you think a bricklayer 'just butters' the bricks, and voila a fucking house...
It was used as a 'METAPHOR'...
WHY the fuck am I even giving you the time of day, You are quite obviously retarded, know FUCK ALL about guitars, guitarists, bands, music , the birds and the bees, that mummys a dirty fucking whore, daddies fucking the paperboy.....
OH and no matter how you blocked it out and try not to be,...because your first grade teacher made you suck his cock every morning before register, YOUR'E gonna spend the rest of your life up tight, searching for anything to stick your dick in....
Fuck I hope you don't have kids!!
And don't keep fkn saying I change the subject!!
not him, but geez kid, grow up
u sound very ignorant and really immature
we all have google
u know that right?
u r consistently wrong all over this thread
you think you'd stop after 20+ posts of nonsense and boatload of anons telling u that you are retarded, but no, still wallowing in ignorance
I must be a new faq, cause I have no idea what the fuck you are on about!!
After a dozen posts about run of the mill guitarists and lots of children posting their lover, Eddie was mentioned by this anon >>704938170 who clearly is the only one in this thread who knows what he is talking about.
He got everything right pretty much. I don't agree with Dimebag being a top ten but the argument is at least plausible.
>give me a call when you find someone with more studio albums than buckethead
and 99% shit
this isn't a thread about who has recorded the most either
if anything, that he has recorded that much stuff and literally hardly anyone outside of guitarfags knows who the hell he is shows that he is just not that good of a musician so your point really works against you in that sense too, setting aside it is completely irrelevant to a best guitarist thread
A great guitar player with great songs. What a concept.
And how many of those have charted?
Oh yeah, none.
If you are going by that, like the other anons have said, you'd have to go with B.B. King. He's written and recorded a fuckload of studio albums and had probably over 50 of those singles that have charted, including a bunch of number 1's.
oh yea hes so shit thats why hes endorsed by les paul, thats why he took over for slash in guns and roses thats why les claypool stays doing projects with him. hes such a shitty guitarist huh. thats why hes just as good when he picks up a bass right. you dont know shit bro
Could waste every fucker in this thread.
Loses points for being dead.
Thats fooking jerry cantrell.....
sorta off topic.
Ive owned this guitar for about 8 years now. My father bought it off the owner of a rock club which had suffered fire damage and wasn't insured. The guitar was in a glass display case and thats all i know about it. There is no brand names on anything except the pick up which is a Bill Lawrence. Other than that i can't identify anything else on it.
ITT: newfag cunts who think awesome guitarist means shredding so fast you cant hear the notes, big name endorsements. suck a dick cunts.
>jimi hendrix - for the revolution
>jimmy page - for the music
>tony iommi - for the influence
>stevie ray vaughan - for the second coming of Jimi
I'm with you on these ones.
You don't get much joy from playing, do you?
Why not just name David Gilmour too and go full on gay and dumbererer?
You can do it!
Yeah I'm planning on it. Just starting to play again. To the best of my Knowledge i think its just a generic strat copy with a dimebag darryl -ish paint job. My friend did some work on it and based on the weight and the internal he thinks its pretty old. Its almost double the weight of his fender mustang.
Generic strat copy...= SHIT.
Humbucker looks bad quality.
tail/trem looks like a crude block of metal = -
Not bad shape...could become quite popular!
I got a $200 squier that plays better than my $3K les paul
ain't about the gear dumbfuck
He bummed a smoke off me after I asked him for his autograph.
Yeah, he can do just about anything that can be done on a guitar.
fuck off i just got my grade 9
this thread is on several times a day. Here are some that no one mentions:
I used to mostly like guitar playing. Then I grew up and started liking music more.
I suspect that evolution may elude you.
Well there is a potent retort. Do you feel better now son?
Here is Tony and Eddie after the show at the Hollywood Bowl a couple days ago.
I've been to a lot of shows.
Ray toro may be an emo faggot but hes a fuckin great guitarist
Keith at Candlestick October 1981.
It takes some nuance to appreciate what and how he really plays. A lot harder than it sounds.
George opening for J. Geils and the Stones. He really played like a bad motherfucker. Potato camera quality, but I was peaking on two hits of some brutal blotter.
>distinct Chinese shit sound
You'll figure it out someday.
No, But I've encountered them in enough live and studio sessions to understand that they all possess a sonic similarity. It's my job.
Something all of these guitar gods you are posting have in common is the wealth of good gear they are photographed playing with.
ITT: people who think bass isn't a type of guitar
You ever seen the beat to shit a lot of these guys play with? Yeah, they're heavily set up and a lot of fake fade, but the gear is almost irrelevant. How about the shit-tier analog tracking gear from the 70s?
Ain't about the gear.
Here is Tony about to rip the lead break on Into the Void, Mt. View CA 2013.
Dave Meneketti, lead break on Rescue Me.
IS EVERYONE HERE FUCKING STUPID? OR ARE YOU ALL 17 METALLICA FANS
NO MENTION FOR MALMSTEEN, NECROPHAGIST SUICMEZ, SHULDINER, MUENZNER, AND ALMOST EVERY TECH DEATH OR PROGRESSIVE GUY?
MUSTAINE??? HENDRIX??? FOR THE "FEEL" OF A BENDED NOTE HALF HOUR?
It's a cruel twist of fate to be this talented and have disease take it away.
Jimmy at ARMS concert still recovering from his habit, Cow Palace 1983. Played with Clapton and Beck.
Go forth and see some shows.
you say all that then claim mustaine as legit top 10
hendrix, like gilmour was inventive but sloppy.
this thread depends how you rate them. if you are talking classically skilled virtuosos who can find Dsus9 with a F bass in 12 positions... then they arent really making memorable music while Gilmour and Hendrix and Clapton wrote hooks that will last for hundreds of years.
Buckethead? He is just a high speed noise generator. Listen to one side of one of his albums and you have the whole catalog covered.
Mustaine easily one of the best metal riff writers of all time. I'm sure there are a lot of guitarists who dwarf mustaine in technical skill but you can't deny he writes good material.
It's not always about technical skill, you know. Sound design is important.
As in Scott Putesky?
As in the guy who knew 3 chords and played all 3 badly on Manson's first album?
Lots of stuff I disagree with here, like the people ragging on Buckethead. A lot of what he puts out may be near impossible to enjoy musically, yeah, but he's shown that he can be soulful at times too (and no, I'm not referring to just Soothsayer). Discounting such technically proficient players who have a deep understanding of music theory is ridiculous. While that alone doesn't make them gods of the instrument, it shows a dedication and even passion for music that honestly most of today's "artists" are completely lacking. Guys like Vai, satch and Malmsteen, as well as Paul Gilbert, Shawn Lane and yes, Buckethead, and so many more. They are fantastic players who do what they do because they love it. But Meh, haters gonna hate.
Also, surprised no one mentioned Eric Johnson yet. Not a great songwriter, really, but as an instrumental player his tone and musicianship are fantastic.
<u can't prove me wrong faggots
You guys are fucking plebs. Not one mention of Shawn Lane?
I disagree. Arpeggios are very beautiful even when played fast. To me it's more about the dynamism of the composition. You need your slow parts, fast parts, soft parts, loud parts. That's what captivates a listener.
Literally everyone mentioned besides him , so fucking sad
Jeez, I'm a little surprised I haven't seen these names on a thread for "God Tier Guitarists".
