Half-Life.

It wasn't so much that the game was incredible itself but more so what came with it. I had my first taste of deathmatch which I enjoyed even more in Opposing Force. We had Blue Shift continuing Barney's story and all the other mods. Things like Sven Co-op, CS and also DoD.

Don't get me wrong, HL2 and its subsequent episodes set another incredibly high standard for FPS games but it was Day of Defeat and especially Counter-Strike that kept me going all through high school.

I played through the Half-Life universe from when the game was first released until I left school, best part of 7 years.

not enough Metroid games here.
