Also, because an anon asked last time I posted this if there was "lore or a story" to this, I will share in chunks the intro piece that I wrote for a blog I am putting together. Among the Fairyfolk of Annwfn, the Pixie is the most numerous, most varied, and most widespread. There are Pixies in nearly every climate, and in every geographical region of the world. There are Frost Pixies, Forest Pixies, Mountain Pixies, Desert Pixies, Tree Pixies... There are even those who suggest that the Bogie is really just another Pixie, the Swamp Pixie, since male Pixies (or "Sparrowmen") and female Bogies ("Sirens") have sometimes created offspring. Perhaps it is not so surprising that Pixies abound as they do throughout the natural world since Pixies are integral to the smooth flow of nature. It is Pixies who paint the wings of butterflies, who teach birds to sing, who train the direction of rivers, and who choreograph the falling of snowflakes.

Chunk 2/?:

When we think of Pixies, we think of sparkling, small, winged Elves, maybe five inches tall, who wear leaves and grasses and the skins and hides of tiny creatures. In fact, Pixies may be as small as four inches or as tall as six, though it is rare to see a female taller than five, and it is the females who are the more numerous. And while Pixies can and do wear feathers and nut shells and even mouseskin, they also wear clothing made from fabric they trade for with the larger Fairyfolk, as well as that which they steal from humans. The sparkle we associate with Pixies is in fact what they call "stardust", and it is a by-product of wing development: young Pixies are born wingless, growing wings only as they begin to enter sexual maturity, and creating and shedding stardust as their wings take their final form. Fully adult Pixies do not sparkle with stardust, and only a Pixie who is great with child glows like a tiny lantern.

That there are sufficient glowing Pixies that we think of this as an inherent trait is evidence of just how prolific these tiny Fairyfolk are. Pixies are creatures dedicated to joy and to pleasure, and while they do recognise and practice the act of marriage, many of them do not feel that marriage is a requirement for physical lovemaking, nor that those who are wed should be restricted by their marriage in determining who they might join in physical love. It is not unusual for a Pixie family to be headed by a married man and woman, but for the children to be the product of extramarital unions.

Family is fluid and adoption common among the Pixies as Pixie women do not give birth to a living offspring, but rather they birth a small acorn that gestates for a period of time in the woman, then grows and hatches on its own like an egg. A man may take the acorn of a paramour and bring it home to his wife for them to raise, or a woman may "pop" the acorn (to use a Pixie term) of a man who is not her husband, yet the two will happily raise the child the very same as they raise their own. A single woman may give her acorn to her paramour, raise the child on her own, raise it with siblings or parents, or even give her acorn to a family who will happily look after it. In spite of the fact that Pixies' may have family members spread throughout the community, they all recognise their close relations instinctively, even if they had never seen one another in their lives.

Though Pixies (and indeed all of Annwfn's Fairyfolk) have a reputation for promiscuity, the fact is that it is joy that is their driving force, not sex. Sex is one way in which many Pixies follow and express their joy, but one may be just as likely to find their pleasure in music, in art, in dance -- there is even one famous Pixie from The Oak Forest whose joy is expressed through the passionate pursuit of history and knowledge! There is no limit to the numerous ways in which these creatures exercise their passion. And sex for Pixies is not limited to copulation, but has many modes of expression. Homosexuality and bisexuality are common among Pixies. So is heterosexuality. Sparrowmen more often have a preference for one sex or the other, while the more numerous women are more likely to be fluid and flexible in their physical relationships.

Despite the apparent or perceived normalisation of sexual contact among Pixiekind, it would be wrong to assume that they are entirely without boundaries in this regard. Interspecies and intergenerational sexual contact is as taboo among the Pixies as it is among most races. Sexual contact among close family members (those related by blood, and only slightly less often by adoption) is uncommon. While contact between Pixies of the same age-set is seen as normal, even when they are particularly young, for a more mature Pixie to engage in contact with a Pixie whose wings are still shedding stardust is frowned upon, and no respectable Pixie would engage a Pixie who had not yet sprouted her or his wings.

Wings are the method of general age assessment among the Pixies, with the number of years or seasons or cycles a Pixie has been alive having little bearing on their maturity. Rather, those too young to have wings are seen as children and pre-adolescents, while those whose wings are still developing and sparkling with stardust are seen as adolescents or "young people", and those Pixies whose wings are fully formed are considered adult.

While on the subject of wings, it is noteworthy that there is a great variety of wing forms and types among the Pixies off Annwfn. They may resemble those of butterflies or moths, they may be rounded or pointed, they may be translucent, or they may be soft and woollen. The only difference between the wings of women and those of men is that the men are the only ones who may grow small, feathered, bird-like wings. Fully a third of all men have avian wings, thus they are given the name "Sparrowmen". While some wing types may be more or less common in one area or another, or more or less common among one kind of Pixie than another, other than that feathered wings only exist among the men, no generalisations can be made.

My documentation here is based on a study of the Pixies living in the allied kingdoms of Lake Meadow, The Oak Forest, and Rainy Mountains, bordering the Bogie domain of The Black Marsh or Black Marshlands. The nearest human settlement is the village of Caledonia, itself located within a kingdom known as Rainy Mountain. To avoid confusion between the two Rainy Mountain(s) kingdoms, and because the seat of the allies' parliament is located in The Oak Forest, I will attempt to use the terms "The Oak Forest" or "The Allied Kingdoms" in documenting the life and behaviours of the Pixies, emphasising "the Human Kingdom of" or "the Fae Kingdom of" where appropriate.
