The feeling if you lose a comrade when you were responsible for him. The planlessness of all the people around you when bad shit happens. The moment you realize you can't do shit about it and he's dead. 21 years old and fucking dead. It's not worth it. Whether you are the guy dying, or you are the guy next to the guy dying.

I tried to enlist 4 years ago when i was 22. australian defense force. my three preferences were Rifleman, Rifleman, Rifleman.

Psych test showed leadership potential, so my recruiter convinced me to apply for officer selection. didn't have any schooling past grade 8. ADF got me to sit maths, english and science tests for grades 9, 10, 11 and 12. failed the years 12 maths test. told to reapply as rifleman.

suddenly i just didn't give a fuck anymore. i didn't want to go into the army with "failed officer selection" on my file. so i just gave up the dream.

been regretting it ever since.
