Should I update to Windows 10? It's the last month when it's available for free. I've heard a lot of bad stuff about it and I like Windows 7 a lot and got used to it, but then again, in a few years I'll probably have to get it anyway since new games etc. will not be compatible with 7, and then I'll regret not getting it for free when I could. Unless they'll release another one by then...
>>692445793 PROTIP: Windows 10 is going to become a subscription-based service within the next year. Don't fall for that shit, torrent W7 Professional, it's on TPB and remember to seed your fucking torrents. You can thank me later.
>>692445793 a week ago i'd say give it a go, but 2 days ago i started having .dll problems, and windows 10 won't fix the corrupted files, so i'll have to get a new os. guess who's going back to windows 7..
>>692445793 >>>692445793 >PROTIP: Windows 10 is going to become a subscription-based service within the next year. Don't fall for that shit, torrent W7 Professional, it's on TPB and remember to seed your fucking torrents. You can thank me later. evidence ?
>get code for Win10 from university >install it >blue screen every 2-12 hours >can't play WarHammer >can't play shit for more than 10min- 1 hour >solidworks crashes and looses all my work >switch back to Win8.1 >still garbage but it works
Do you game OP? If you do and have decent hardware then you are shooting yourself in the foot by not getting 10. If your hardware is roughly 5 years older or more then stick with what you've got.
Personal I paid £20 for a key online and used the win10 pro x64 iso from Microsoft.
I did try the win 10 upgrade from windows 7 when it was first offered but I blue screened so reinstalled 7. This time around though I just used the iso to do a fresh install, fuck upgrading every again. I'd only recommend a clean install.
>>692448744 That dude is describing ransomware but it has been talked about for a while that a lot of the win10 services will be subject to a monthly subscription fee. See what they're already doing with their stupid fucking games. Pay to play ad free solitaire. No fucking thanks.
>>692448657 Feels like I'm arguing with a child who cant back shit up. Learn some punctuation and shit, then come back with some sources. http://www.itpro.co.uk/desktop-hardware/windows-xp-windows-7-migration/20552/windows-8-ignored-enterprise-customers
>“Since x86 workstations began in 1996, there have only been three major OS releases enterprises that have been accepted. Windows NT 4.0 was the first, Windows XP and now Windows 7. They are ignoring Windows 8.”
It won't m,ake your shitty hardware any better faggot, and it's well documented that most games run worse on 10, plus it uninstalls some programs when it updates itself, oh and you can't turn that off either. you literally have to block multiple ports through your router to stop it sending information back to microsoft every day. It is just straight up bad.
If you're the type of person that is OK with malware like practices being performed by your OS then by all means go ahead, but please never breed.
>>692449134 Why the actual fuck would they do that. Dual booting GNU/linux and windows makes sense. But just a win7-8/10 dual boot is retarded. And gay. And probably has a nigger less than a 2nd cousin away in their family tree.
>>692445793 you should install a real operating system for men, GNU/Linux. windows is for manlets. no point in arguing whether win10 or win7 is better, as they both suck. good luck sending your data to microsoft so they can masturbate. and comparing GNU/Linux to windows is like comparing lego to lego duplo, so don't even bother.
>>692449238 yeah or just stay on 7, you're not going to have any security issues unless you're severely retarded with your daily computer use.
You can remove all of the windows 10 upgrade files from 7 easily and make sure it never tries to pull that shit where it downloads and updates things without your permission on you again - something you cannot do with windows 10
>>692449514 kek I post something that refutes your claim of >everybody who's tried both (and is not a retard like you) disagrees by showing that fucking HP didn't switch due to not trusting its stability, and all you got is >typical retard logic and deflection.
You have no argument son, just fucking pack it in all ready.
>>692445793 No, I recently had a big issue with Windows 10. Out of the blue it stopped working properly, Start menu, Cortana, basically all Windows' Apps, Sound and WiFi were not working. Reinstalled without losing files twice and did nothing, ran powershell commands, dos commands and nothing. Took me 2 days to make partitions to save my files and reinstall completely Windows. I regret upgrading.

>>692450449 i like to improve the world by spreading my positive experience about win8.1. never said anything about win10. never insulted anyone who didn't insult my intelligence with knee-jerk non-reflective MS bashing.
>>692445793 I was a windows 8 hater but I like windows 10. It's not like windows 10 is nice right after you install it. I had to use some tweaks like winaero, windows 7 toolkit and some registry hacks to make it look and feel better. I made 'this PC' and the side pane look like in windows 7, reverted the volume control pop up to the old one, added the details pain on bottom (whytf did they remove it?) and various tweaks like that.
>>692451286 How about more like $20 monthly to use office after an initial free trial period. Or $5 monthly to get back your screen real estate from ads when you try to play games. And none of this is addressing the real issue here. The fact that the nsa has a direct line to all of your information. The fact that Microsoft will scan your system for anything it deems illegal (movies, games, software, pictures) and reports to big brother. Without any kind of warrant. Know why they don't get a warrant? They don't need one. It's in the eula that you're giving them your permission to do so.
Win10 is a decent OS if you don't mind Microsoft knowing literally everything about you and showing ads. But then, you don't care that Google already does both, so maybe this will be fine too. Other than that it's just another Windows. Win10 starts up really fast, if that's a selling point for you. Takes literally 10 seconds to start a computer. It's fantastic. The downside of the OS is that not everything is compatible with Win10. Not yet anyway. The choice to upgrade is yours, but these are the pros and cons.
>>692448911 I have never heard of this. There is literally no reason to use any service that requires a monthly fee. >>692451597 >using MS Office at all when you can use Libre Office, which is free and better.

>>692451217 ive used all 3 for long amounts of time. interface is the only noticeable difference. but even then its not even a big deal. when 8.1 got rid of the start button i just downloaded a third party start button and everything was back to normal. people who complain are idiots. 10.1 kinda brought the start button back though. i dont use that weird screen that looks like a tablet interface. i think thats pretty dumb. and its not like were forced to use it or anything. again, people who complain are dumb.

Knowledge is power bro. Lets say you are a US senator, running on a crazy platform that will introduce sweeping legislation that would hurt M$'s profit margin. Now lets assume that you are also into diaper scat/cock and ball torture. M$ could use that info against you, threatening to leak said info if you attempt to go through with your plans.
>>692452085 Mayne not on the enterprise level but if you were to offer a openoffice level for free, but then have the ultimate professional version with a 3-6 month free trial then be charged monthly you'd be amazed how many people would.
For some reason nothing works on 64-bit after getting a new primary HDD. I probably fucked something up and now I'm at the point of getting a fresh new install. I have a brand new game-PC, do I install Win 7 again or "upgrade" to Win 10, because DirectX12?
>please help me with this, I want to get this done
>>692445793 Use Windows backup (built into 7) to create a backup image to an external HDD. Upgrade to Windows 10. After confirming activation, restore your backup image. There, now whenever you really do want to upgrade, your hardware has been fingerprinted and Windows 10 will activate whenever you install it later (unless you replace motherboard or something). That's how the upgrade activations work. "Digital entitlement" they call it.
>>692453491 Not true. My opinion is that 7 is more convenient and if you're running decent hardware the speed difference is negligible. What's not up for debate though is that you are paid by Microsoft to advertise their products on forums and message boards and that you get a but of change each time you mention win10 and it's 'merits'. Oh and you worship beef for some fucking reason. And shit in the streets.
If you've got nothing to hide then who cares? If you're doing something illegal on the internet then you should deal with the consequences. Game pirates should be stopped because they should learn how to pay for games like EVERYONE else.

>>692445793 I have been stressing out about this SAME fucking question.. we have only 28 days left to update to Windows 10 for free.... I can't decide if I should do it or not BECAUSE i've heard 10 sucks...but I have 8.1... and it sucks too... so.... meh. I can't decide!
>>692454099 >If you've got nothing to hide then who cares?
You are the cancer that is running humanity into the ground. YOU are NOT the one to judge wheter you have something to hide or not. If in 10 years your GOVERNMENT decides it's illegal to shitpost then guess who would go to jail? Your pathetic ass. I can't believe how goddamn moronic people can be.
Windows 10 is basically a functional windows 8/8.1 that reverts back to the usual windows layout.
You can restore your OS back within 31 days of installing Windows 10. I went from win7 to win10. Haven't regretted it, haven't gone back. The whole "tracking your info" stuff is.... bullshit? I mean... it's true. But not for why they make it seem. It's basically the same permissions your smartphone has... they want their little digital assistant to "learn" about you to better help you. You can turn that shit off. They're not like big brothering your ass. I had a little fun with Cortana, made the bitch sing for me and shit.... but it got old after like 3 minutes.
Listen. Nerds argue and debate all the god damn time. They can talk you into intel or AMD depending on who you're listening too. Just try it yourself and if you dont like it just go back.
Also Microsoft is considering making it free to upgrade too for literally everybody at some point, for free. They're trying to tout it as their latest, greatest, universal OS.
I know what it's like to be used to an OS. I took forever to move from XP. Shit just worked. But eventually that shits going to stop working and become dated and stop being supported. It's time to move on. It's time to not get left behind.
I have Windows 10 and haven't had any of the technical problems that people have complained about, and if you've used Facebook or Google in the past 10 years, people have been "spying" (read: collecting data for adware) on you since then anyway. I would stick with 7 anyway, though, because it isn't much better to be honest. Thinking that they're selling your shit to lizard people or the CIA is just a reddit meme. No one cares what your porn preferences are.
>>692455670 Thank you for the feedback. Nice to get a decent answer for once from someone on here. The only real reason I haven't upgraded to 10 was because of all the horror stories i've heard. Mostly MS spying on you, collecting information, seeing everything you do, etc. The WORST I do is download loli shit (its not real) but it's sketchy at best. Don't feel like the FBI showing up at my door for cartoon porn, ya know? That's really all that's holding me back, that and like I said, i've heard people say 10 sucks.
>>692445793 Well I have used 10 Pro for a while and it's really really bad and unstable piece of shit if you do anything else with your computer than play games. For gaming it's ok but not good.
Win 8.1 is shit but more stable than 10 but would not want to use it for anything work related. For gaming it's actually best option until 10 becones more stable.
Win 8 is retarded and nobody should use that shit.
Win 7 Pro is the best option still because it's all rounder and you can do anything with it and it's the most stable and secure windows at the moment.
Win XP... well only if you do not use the computer online and / or play retro games.
Having said that all, I use Windows 7 for most of the stuff Windows related and anything else that does not require windows I use Manjaro or some other Linux distribution. Just think what you want and need and make your pick.
>>692456062 >The WORST I do is download loli shit (its not real) but it's sketchy at best.
we all know you're going to move to more sketchy shit, so get your privacy solution in place now. that's a good move regardless whatever OS you're using. NONE of them offer privacy protection out of the box (save for some aluminium hat linux distros of course).
>>692456204 Was with you right up until manjaro. Dude install arch. Just do it. Fuck manjaro. You should research their security practices. Seriously. If you can't into cli install just use architect. Pure vanilla arch.
>>692456342 >we all know you're going to move to more sketchy shit.
Actually no. The weird part about me downloading Loli is that I like it, but the real thing makes me sick. I genuinely get sick at the thought of it. So no, I really won't move to more sketchy shit. I fully admit that I like the cartoon loli stuff though. But still, I don't really know all the laws about it. So as I said, it's sketchy at best.
You do have a point, no windows offer privacy. So if it was an issue, i'd already be fucked. I very well may just go for 10 and try it out. I keep hearing about people saying it crashes and people having DLL problems. That shit freaks me out too.. so... I dunno.
Listen you're just going to get this "pajeet" meme on 4chan.
The basis for the "spying" rumor comes from two things that people took too far.
>Windows 10 cloud
Basically with win10 you have the option of participating in this cloud software shit where they'll gather non personal information from your computer to see what features you're using, how you're using them, etc... They spend a lot of time and money developing these things and they like to know which ones were worth their effort basically. Regardless, most people turn this feature off.
Cortana can learn your location and where you work to check for traffic, the weather, etc.... This information is stored in Cortana's memory (same with siri etc...) so their product can seem more useful to you the more you use it.
Cortana can also be turned off.
Aside from these two features, which are optional, it's basically a cross between the good parts of win7 and win8.1 (what little their was).
But yeah as I said it's optional. Give it a shot, see how it works, and switch back if it's not for you. Nothing but loonies on 4chan. I mean are you really going to trust the opinion of people on a website where you can see gore, child porn, trump, and ylyl threads full of banana pictures? This website is a joke that occasionally spouts useful info.
As for the loli thing..... pic related. We're more alike than you originally thought, and yet so very different. (been using win10 for a year, if they mind my shota and torrenting they havent said a god damn thing about it)
>>692456719 Cheers! I appreciate the information. I do have ONE last question. What about all the crap going around where people say after a year is up with windows 10, you have to pay a fee to CONTINUE to use it? I've seen documented proof that this is a real thing so I was wondering about that. (Though this IS the internet, ANYTHING can be made to look "real").
>>692454292 OP here, this actually interests me, can I download Win 10 ISO for free now and just install it from that in the future, like in 2 years for example, or do I have to install it before the end of July anyway?
I feel no need to update now, the only reason I'm thinking about doing it is that few years from now Win 7 might start getting really old and not supported and then I'll regret having to pay for new one when I could get it for free now
>>692456998 I won't be surprised if it turns out that it's the activation that's free. Images are worthless from the legitimacy standpoint. >>692457174 What are they going to do, remotely format my hard drive?
Ok so what you likely saw was a screen cap when they advertised the free upgrade if you upgrade in the first year of it's life span.
"Windows 10, free upgrade for the first year". Basically it means...
>If you download it within the first year it's free forever.
Some people thought it meant
>If you download it within the first year it's free until the monthly subscriptions kick in!
It's a misunderstanding that turned into a rumor that is currently being used as troll fodder.
Here is Microsofts response to the initial confusion. There's been a lot of talk about Windows 10 being a free upgrade. For many customers, that will be true for the first year. So let's confirm the details:
Microsoft will offer a free upgrade to Windows 10 for qualified Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8.1 devices in the first year. After the first year, upgrades will be paid via boxed product and VL Upgrades. Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 7 Home Basic and Home Premium devices upgrade to Windows 10 Home Windows 8/8.1 Pro and Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate devices upgrade to Windows 10 Pro If upgraded within the first 12 months following launch, the device will receive ongoing Windows 10 updates for free for the life of that device Excludes Windows Enterprise and RT devices The free Windows 10 upgrade is delivered through Windows Update; domain-joined machines can manually get the update via Windows Update. The upgrade cannot be deployed through WSUS.
>>692457324 Cool, thanks man. Much appreciate. That at least puts my mind at ease. My roommate has windows 10 and says it's awesome, he keeps bugging me to upgrade my 8.1 to 10.. so fuck it... I might as well. It's free.
>>692458214 All of my this! My main shitposting machine is a t420 with gentoo that gets about 80 percent of my usage time but my desktop I only use for games. It has NEVER been networked, all of my games I bittorent to the Linux machine through a VPN and then transfer to the windows 7 machine. This system works perfectly for my needs. Any drivers I need or other software it's the same thing. Works perfectly and I will never have to worry about coming home from work and having to sue M$
>>692458645 9 was skipped for poor version checking regarding 95/98 vs others, basically "does the Windows version start with a 9? Do this" would trigger if it was just a 9, and could cause alot of issues with legacy software. That's my understanding at least.
>>692458768 Nah dude not too inconvenient at all. Removable storage makes it pretty simple. Plus I don't download new games that often so don't have to worry about it that often. And I find that of the 100s of games I have I usually come back to the same 4 or 5
>>692458506 Eventually all new games will require Win-10 or above. How many of the really good games today run on Win-98 or Win-XP?
Yes, you can stubbornly stay on a non-networked blind, crippled and retarded Win-7 PC until your hardware melts down. And there's nothing wrong with that. I pull up my VM of Win-98 and run some old games for shits and giggles now and again myself, but I don't live in Win-98 out of blind stubbornness in the belief if I bury my head (PC) in the sand it will stop progress.
However *EVENTUALLY* most new software will bypass your dinosaur PC and refuse to run on it.
>>692451442 They've found files hidden in the core win10 system that are there for the sole purpose of handling subscription based upgrades. Want that new security patch so your machine doesn't become a Russian bitcoin miner? Gotta pay up. It's basically like a small business owner paying off the local gang for 'protection'
>>692445793 If you want windows 10 just torrent it like everyone else and use Rufus to make a usb drive the windows installer. I do this every time I fuck it up or etc. Also I use Win7 Ultimate and after 3 months of w10 I'm sticking with 7 thank you. 8.1 is actually better...
>>692459549 it's not hidden, you don't know it's for the sole purpose of upgrading subscriptions. It might order pizza as well. You don't know what the subscriptions are about at all. Might be for integrating office/onedrive/skype/MSDN or whatnot subscriptions into windows somehow.
