Dude, I grew up with brothers and have been playing games since I was 4. I hated going outside and the kids in my neighborhood, so I played games. I've been mocked my whole life by girls and boys. I've never gotten positive attention in the past for saying I play video games. I even use a voice changer online to hide my gender. If I don't I either get hit on or called an attention whore. Gears 1-3, House of the Dead 2/3/OK, EDF, L4D1/2, Donkey Kong Country, Mario Kart, and she gave Smash a try but wasn't really feeling it. Daughter is a big nerd, like me, sad to say. She adores everything, from animal crossing to pokemon, the tales series, final fantasy, on up to yakuza and dark souls. One of her more favorite games right now is adventure island 2, and she's a firm believer that, if you used save states, you didn't beat the game.

It comes down to the individual a lot of times. Most girls are uncomfortable with their reaction times, and easily frustrated, hence why a lot of typical "girl games" arn't very fast paced, are rather simplistic, or both. A lot of what's being said is honestly true, a good chunk of the current "gurrl gamer! :D " movement is just an attention/money grab, but there are some standouts, here and there.

I fucking like video games. But that is only because I was close to my dad as a child and I used to watch him play all the time, if it wasn't because of that I wouldn't like video games at all.

Gaming is not an activity that anyone, male or female, is naturally attracted to, obviously. There would be no reason for this natural attraction to exist.
Gaming is an activity performed to stimulate the reward structures in the brain, as are so many other things (physical sports, dating, academia, etc etc).

The method humans choose to achieve this is one that best fits their perception of their circumstances and environments. So someone who perceives themselves as physically inept will not choose physical activity. Someone who sees themselves as unintelligent will not choose academia, etc.

Gaming requires no physical aptitude, is anonymous and therefore does not rely on physical appearance, and in addition does not expose one to criticism when one fails.

The physical aptitude part is the most important determinant in the gender ratio. Since females are not expected to be physically adept in the first place, it makes it unlikely that they would need to resort to gaming in order to achieve the desired outcome. Additionally, although it may seem counter intuitive, physical appearance is less of a factor for women as well. This is because men have to inititate contact, and even if a girl is a 5/10, she will still get attention from guys, but a guy thats a 5 will have to initiate contact, even if he has the same number of potential suiters as his female counterpart.

There is a small percentage of women who are above average consumers of videogames. They're late to the party as a gender and catching up little by little.

I've found though that women will often gather artificial shallow traits in the beginning of a relationship with a guy to gain solidarity. Sometimes this actually opens up their mind to videogames, but most of the time I see them stop playing once they get comfortable. It's just another way to squirm into your chest pretending to be something they aren't.

imo it's just the same thing about taking selfies or posting to social media constantly. They NEEED consistent validation for their actions or else why bother with them at all. I'm convinced if you were forced to remain anonymous in all games then the population of female gamers would probably drop by 20-30%. Guys will play an mmorpg alone for months/years because they love it, a girl will enter this world showered with beta male attention, and when it stops they stop playing. I could see your point if I'd said COD, but every game I listed is objectively good. You seem to want to take it to the extreme of AAA means slave labor, lost morals and yearly garbage, but then distance yourself from indies as well. Hate to break it to you, but there aren't many B-games out there anymore. And besides, she's a girl. She is not even remotely interested in mmo or competitive games, nor in punishingly difficult ones like dark souls. I'm playing elite dangerous atm. She isn't interested, and that's fine; I don't expect her to be. But my point was she has played and beaten many male-dominated games and doesn't feel the need to make an Instagram about it. She abhors the girl gamer craze. One final note, she has played and beaten other games as well, i.e. your Zeldas, Pokemon, etc, but those titles had universal appeal by design, so I left them out.
