Benefits 1) Cheaper long term than any other form of contraception. 2) Listed as a treatment for heavy periods, so most women have no periods (also save on sanitary products). 3) Lower chance of endometritis. 4) Statistically most successful form of contraception.

Cons 1) Slightly higher chance of ectopic pregnancy, but pregnancy risk is low anyway.
2) Needs speculum examination to insert, but is not painful if done correctly.

Two versions : one with copper, which acts as a spermicide. The other one with hormones (progesteron), which mimics the state a woman is in when pregnant by thickening the secretions at the cervix (hence the possible weight gain, acne, hair stuff and so on, although it highly remains person dependent. Both usually come in "shorter versions", usually prescribed for women who haven't been pregnant yet. But they can be used for anyone who asks, it can help reduce the discomfort felt sometimes. The only thing to know is you need a minimum length of copper for it to be effective (usually 380mm).
Periods may disappear with the hormonal one, although you can get some minor bleeding at random times (spotting). Anti-inflammatories can help with that phenomenon.
Same goes with cramps (especially with the copper IUD), anti-inflammatories can help. Don't trust people who say it weakens the contraceptive effect (especially in France, even from pharmacists), that's bullshit as the effect is not brought by an inflammatory state in the first place : again, copper is the key, kills sperms.
The tricky bit is the insertion : docs sometimes use a device called a pozzi clip to hold the cervix during the insertion, which causes a lot of pain (think testicle torsion) and cramps as a reaction. This clip is not needed AT ALL if the practitioner is good enough : insertion can be made in a swift, "torpedoing"like motion, as long as the vagina is in line with the cervix.
