I liked the fact that it was the first non-love-story in the series (or at least the modern ones, since 7). After a while the love stories were predictable and meh (surprise, Tidus and Yuna fell in love even tho they're not supposed to hurr). But the political overtones in 12 were well thought out and detailed enough to be believable, plus after his speech in Rabanastre, Vayne actually looked like the reasonable one for at least a moment.

Not saying i didn't like it and i agree about the music but the characters weren't particularly likable, some of the battles seemed contrived (especially when finding GFs), and it's bogus that you have to (a) steal magic, and (b) use that magic for stats. I found myself never using the coolest spells simply because they were better as stat boosters, so why have it if it's not practical to use it? Then if i use it as a spell, i have to go find the fucking monster from whom i can steal more of it to replenish my stats.

Kudos to them for trying something new (and some of it, like the weapon upgrade system, influenced later games) but i think the consensus is that the magic system didn't really work.

The cutscenes were truly amazing and i was so fucking sad when lightnings sister turned to crystal, the gameplay absolutely sucked but god were those moments awe inspiring, like when snow put lightnings sister on the back of his motorcycle and drove through the fireworks.

Nah ff10-2 was actually great if you can get past the >hurr girls and dress spheres wtf. Battle actually required you to participate, unlike 10 where you could put the controller down at any point and go make a sandwich.

The 100 levels at the end (i forget what it's called now) was legit challenging and the bosses, including the battle against Trema at the end, are tough but doable, not meme battles at all. (i was the one that called 10-2 the most underrated above)

Final Fantasy VII

the fucking plot is mystical and forever relevant. what I dig is the esoteric double meanings which is in the same vein as VI only thicker.
The epic events of the evil alien jenovas arrival and subsequent attempted domination of its pagan peoples, with their full knowledge of the spiritual nature of life death and rebirth, and their familiarity with the many gods and deities.... it seems jenova is like a metaphor for jehovah (jehova + nova ... novus "new") so jenova = "new god". it was said that jenova came to the ancients (the pagan cetra) as a benefactor originally, before attempting world dominion and being stopped by the cetra at the cost of their race.
The shinra ("Roman core" apparently, which is how the nazis saw themselves) had always wanted to recreate the ancients and their powers which is like how himlmer wanted to find the aryan race and their mystical vril leanings. But they fucked up and created sephiroth thinking jenova was an ancient. it's well known that the "sephiroth" is the hebraic path to enlightenment.
The SOLDIER were specially chosen warriors who have strong spiritual powers thanks to mako showers and jenova cells. You could say being elite warriors of shinra they are like hitlers SS. note how cloud regards the president early on. They even have scarlet in there, who is the whore of babylon riding the beast. Here she is a shinra exec who rides the proud clod.
The damn game is full of esoteric mysticism.
Anyway didn't want to ramble on just my 2 cents but anyone who says the story is simplistic obviously only got the exoteric parts lol FF7 ftw

I always got the vibe from Braska that he fought like Yuna, given that his personality was so pleasant and he used a staff. Auron fighting how he normally does, as expected, and Jecht always gave me the idea he was a heavy hitter with durability through the roof.

pray that what they said about X-3 comes true. Not that i'd want another abomination like X-2. Eternal Calm was a nice little thing to sit through and that after story about Auron's "daughter" seemed really bitter for my taste so i never finished it.

On the 13 series, I honestly thought 13 would be the end. Story was great, cutscenes were amazing and some boss battles were really enthralling (the second Proudclad fight, for example).

Then 13-2 appears. I appreciate the fact that they improved on the combat (paradigm shift was a lot more responsive and no fcking cutscene), but that story was all over the place, and everything near the end of the game really ticked me off, especially the ending. Without it, it probably wouldn't have spawned 13-3. It shook up everything the last two games had, combat became more complicated, and the story had no direct flow. It was basically Lightning dress up simulator with battle elements attached. Not to mention the religious overtones really killed my drive to finish the game.
