Why don't manufacturers make cars like this anymore?

Some cars nowadays just look either shitty or just dull and forgettable. What happened to really unique concepts? Am I missing something here?

Also aerodynamics for maximum fuel efficiency. Government mandates average MPG for cars sold has to be something like 50 MPG by 2025 I think.

Yeah, if you're a retarded ork in a fictional universe, where painting something red makes it go faster.
Seriously, how retarded do you have to be to think a "boring" design makes a car go slower? If anything, modern designs are far more aerodynamic, and because we have more efficient engines today than 50 years ago, they're also more powerful, and thus faster.

Right after WWII in the US both cars and gas were cheap compared to today. Since one car was pretty similar to another changing the fashion of auto styling every year was incentive for customers to buy a new car even when the one they had was still perfectly good. Just so as not to look out of style.

Now that cars and gas are much more expensive people value economy, reliability and low maintenance over style. Today's cars are boring in terms of looks, but you don't have to spend hours under the hood every weekend to keep them running correctly. Pretty much any of them can make it over 60k miles with nothing more than oil changes. Few if any of the cars pictured ITT could do that.

Barely running, looks like shit, $300-600. I'm handy with tools and paint and as long as the glass is good I can work with everything else.

When I have more money than brains, I want to do the following to something like this:

>take virtual imaging of the entire vehicle, top to bottom
>hire a car designer to tweak it slightly so the shape is more along the lines of my personal style
>manufacture an entire body frame out of high-strength components and pieces
>strip off the chassis, motor, battery and electronics of a Tesla and slap that sucker on top
>drive around with a massively awesome non-fuelsucking vehicle
>just for yukks, have the same guy do a version with the biggest modern engine conceivable
>have them painted identical colors with license plates one character/digit off

Why? Just to fuck with the car nerds who would try oh so very, very hard to identify what that was.

I can still just about remember him driving me to the beach or the mountains for days out, back then we were the only white person most rural Japanese had seen outside of a TV show.

I work at a tow yard.
Some guy got a dui and his vw bug got impounded. He never picked it up. Becomes property of tow company. Co-worker takes a gander and buys it for $80 .gets a 2017 sticker and it's such a fucking sweet ride.

Safety, cost and for the majority of cars, EU directives. Emissions standards. You know, all of the obvious stuff.

But I feel you. It's a shame.

...seriously?
This thing has zero window visibility, a trunk like a mailbox, and unless you're a 5'9" manlet, will be incredibly uncomfortable driving it.

Practical got fuckall to do with it, toggaf.

I gotta ask - do people who don't work there ever come and ask if you have anything on the lot like that for sale?

I have wanted a 1970s VW for years but every goddamn asshole and their brother are snapping up all the Type 2s and Westfalias out there, and killing old Bugs for parts to sell online. I keep thinking maybe I'll find something, but a tow yard might be a good option. Or a junkyard, for the frame.

It has 23,000 miles with everything original, so I am going to leave the engine and everything alone. I have new chrome bumpers and I am going to order new hubcaps due to bubbling chrome. The only wear on the car is all of the rubber grommets are dried out, and the rusty brake springs. This car will not be a daily driver. I have an F150 for that.

You said "80's Corvette", I said "late 80's"... Also, let's not forget, we're comparing the "grocery getter", "most common", i.e. base-model version Camry... ;)

'88 Corvette:
http://www.vettefacts.com/C4/1988.aspx
^ 240hp, 345ft.lbs., ~3200lb

Camry, base model:

I win. ;)

actually you are proving my point

kfc nourishes niggers (aka black voters)

niggers who get nourished fuck each other like monkeys, making more niggers

the half of those baby niggers who dont end up in jail become voting niggers (aka black voters)

ergo, the increase in kfc franchise locations is a direct, if not the main, cause of more niggers (aka black voters)

but you're wrong, you are equating acceleration with top speed, and we both know that is not true

a modern family car can accelerate to 60 MPH from a dead stop faster than an F16, but that doesnt mean a modern family car can break Mach 2

acceleration =/= speed

>>
>>683613325
What's laughable about it other than the factory engine choices? The 2.5 was a joke and the 2.8v6 was barely enough. Other than that.. I loved the styling and they're super comfortable. Even at 6'4" I still had plenty of room.
>>
>>683612871
I have a '67 Gran Sport 400 and a 2016 Charger RT. Neither car would break the bank in their own era. I love the buick, I love old cars. Aside from shit ass compacts and economic rice burners, modern cars are faster 0-60 and top speed. The charger is astronomically faster than my GS, with a smaller motor and the weight is comparable. The modern Charger and challenger are the closest thing to modern muscle and the 3.6 liter V6 base models with 300+ HP will stomp most classic muscle cars with V8 power. I'm talking factory here.
>>
>>683613192
No, it's a VW Beetle on steroids...
>>
>>683613531
The Fiero was GM's DMC-12; a "sports car for the common man"... And it was reflected in its lackluster performance... Thus why they made the Formula and GT variants... Also why people often do the '91 Sedan DeVille engine swap (I forget the specs, not really a Caddy guy)...

Thus, they were fairly laughable... As I said, though, they're quite nifty! For being a cramped little 2-seater, they did well with passenger comfort (as you stated, even for taller passengers), and all the nifty features like speakers in the headrests were what made the Fiero not -just- a laughable car... For how much I laughed at them, I did also like them to a degree...

New cars have to be reliable, filled with tech and work for many years without breaking down. Old cars are shit in every way compared to the standard production car today, except uniqueness and style.
New cars have to have to be safe, for both pedestrians and the users. Have to have good km/L below 20 km per litre today is low end. Tech, as in airbag, seat belts, ABS braking, traction control, AC, heat and so on.

The only thing old cars have are charm.

well, the early ones at least were quite down on power for a car of that size, and they generally seem to be what gives in first, or parts of it at least
>>
>>683613531
Honestly the 2.8 is a bigger joke than the 2.5 tech4. The tech4 was a great 4 cylinder for its time, durable and peppy. It's plenty powerful for the fiero. The 2.8 was not even worth the upgrade, it's heavy and sluggish with almost no difference in torque. Plus most of the 2M4's didn't have power steering which made them even more fun to drive. The fiero is an underrated sports car.
>>
>>683614092
Formula and GT did shit for performance. All the Formula is is a stripped down coupe with power nothing options. The GT is just a fastback except for one year of the regular styling before it. The most common swap these days is a 3800 super charged. Great cars. Super easy to work on. Also very cheap.

Charm, value, and raw performance unhindered by computer-controlled and emissions bullshit... A car that sold for 2 grand off the showroom floor in 1970 is worth 25x that... Something you won't be able to say about the garbage they've produced since.... An '88 Pontiac 6000, in any kind of shape, in 30 more years, WON'T fetch that kind of price at auction... A '16 Camry will be the same thing, if any make it 50 years...

Worse, I fear with all the computerized bullshit, you won't even be able to run the bastards in 50 years, as the computers will be so out of date that you'll have to retrofit with a new electronic control system...

>pic unrelated
>>
>>683614250
No Fiero had power steering. There were a handful of prototype electric steering cars, but none made it to the public. The iron duke is shit. Period. The best point of it is 40mpg with a 5 speed. The 2.8 does the job pretty well.. peppy enough for its cornering ability.
>>

Car manufacturers are seriously designing cars these days so if you manage to actually hit a person it wont hurt them as much.

Yeah.

>>
Have a 1972 dodge dart swinger I'm rebuilding.

>>
>>683614565
You're almost right.
Sure the value of the car is a lot higher, that's because it's a collector item.

Modern engines have variable valve timing along with electronic fuel injection and engine mapping; this means for the average Joe a cheaper engine that need less repair and maintanence.

If you want to, you can unleash the engines true potential by messing with the mapping.

Closed computer systems don't grow old. They work or they don't.
>>
>>683614902
The 4.9 caddy motor is so much more fun in one. With a 4t60 trans you can still get 30mpg and have a blast.
